Today we talk about the historic beginnings of coffee in the Philippines, particularly in Lipa, Batangas. What is widely accepted as common knowledge stated as fact may not be as true as we think!
Most information stated here is based on the research paper "Demythologising the History of Coffee in Lipa, Batangas in the 19th Century" by Bel Castro, which you can read here: www.academia.e...

I viewed this before its just now that i came back with much appreciation. Im creating a farm tour experience and this is very informative.. it makes sense, that the arabica in batangas did not survive well because of elevation.. Greetings from sagada mountain province, this coffee is now our one town one product and im still in the moment of convincing my peers in planting these high value crops.

Great video, thanks! And timely for us as we want to do a short video about our experience with Filipino coffee, specifically Barako. One interesting point we came across was that, following the US Civil War there was a coffee shortage for various reasons and Barako gained sudden popularity and growth from import through San Francisco to meet the demand. Did you come across this in your research? It wasn't mentioned in this video. It's a real shame that there's no good way to learn about the history of Lipa coffee in Lipa City, itself.
