Mike actually brought up a good point. MLB players were indeed using amphetamines as early as the 1940s to improve concentration during games. They took pills called 'greenies' and this was first revealed to a wide audience in a famous book in the 1970s by a pitcher named Jim Bouton. It was said that if a player did not take his greenies before a game, he was 'playing naked' and would catch flak from his teammates.

before steroids there was Meth which was widely available after ww2. The great Willie Mays admitted, I would go to the doctor and would say to the doctor, ‘Hey, I need something to keep me going. Could you give me some sort of vitamin?’ I don’t know what they put in there, and I never asked a question about anything (Posnanski, 2010). Just about every player used amphetamines. “Pete Rose did. Hank Aaron admitted trying it (Posnanski, 2010).” While amphetamines were not banned from baseball until 1971 (Chafets, 2009, pg. 178), former Royals outfielder Brian McRae (Appendix A) recalled how amphetamines have become a part of the clubhouse scene. “There were always two pots of coffee brewing in the clubhouse -- one conventional and the other laced with stimulants (Crasnick, 2006).”

Before baseball was integrated, the Negro League was loaded with great players. One of the best was Josh Gibson the Black Babe Ruth. Gibson homered in every major league park he played in. Over his career he hit almost 800 home runs. There was a time when the white all-stars would play the Negro all-stars in exhibition games. The Negro all-stars not only held their own against the best white players, but more often than not defeat them. Prompting the commissioner Judge Kennesaw Mountain Landis banning any future games because of racism. Although Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier. He was not by far the best black player. He had the right temperament needed at the time. He paved the way for guys like Satchel Paige, Hank Aaron, Willy Mays. Frank Robinson and many others to follow in his footsteps.

this topic is more about a single year record but I contend that over a career Babe was "King". He played for 22 years. In his first 4 years he was a pitcher and only hit an average of 4 Homeruns per season. But he became a full-time batter after that and in the next 4 years he hit an average of 44 per year. Obviously baseball was completely different then (1914~1935). There were no night games (those hot summer days were killers.....not to mention "boozing" it up at night)...Plus new baseballs were not played at each "pitch" like now (almost every pitch is with a NEW HARD ball)...in those days the ball would get very dirty but more importantly the ball would get beat up and become "spongy".

If you want to find baseball more interesting, you have to understand more about the complexities of the game itself. If you watched the MLB video on “different pitch types”, you’d get an idea of how many pitches there are, how hard it is to throw these pitches, how nearly impossible it is to hit these pitches when you’ve got less than the blink of an eye to respond. It’s a great video, and it’s been suggested by many. It’s really good.

Sammy Sosa was caught using a corked bat which he said happened by accident when he mistakenly grabbed it after using it for batting practice. His other bats were x-rayed and were all found to be cork free
@josephsoto9933
@josephsoto9933 Жыл бұрын
I believe the deal with "corked" bats is to have the same overall bat weight but now it's more located at the "end" or "sweet spot". Which means more bat power is located at the point of contact.....however, scientifically, the argument is flawed. the hollowed-out portion of the bat is weaker (breaks easily), has more "give" (flex) and therefore less ridged.

For a long time MLB had Maris and Ruth as separate records because of the "longer schedule" issue. Maris had died before they finally just made him the sole record holder. At the time, the counter argument was that Ruth didn't have as much travel or night games, so it kinda evens out. But yeah, you can always keep calling things in to question.
@BobbyP5985

Ruth didn’t need to travel or play night games to still be considered the home run king. He drank nonstop and smoked like a chimney yet came to play every single night like it was his last. I’d like to see Bonds, Maris, Judge, McGwire or Sosa play hammered they would barely hit 30 home runs a season. In conclusion, Ruth was the greatest home run king and player of all time. While you can argue that Babe Ruth did not play against Black Players, he did play against the best of the best of that era. I would also point out that he would only be facing black pitchers as a homerun does not include anyone else, so unless you can say he would consistently be facing a great black pitcher who was miles ahead of those he did face, it is highly speculative. The best pitchers in history still gave up home runs and the Babe seemed to hit just about all of them. He may not have hit 60 in 1927, but if he had faced them before and knew how they pitched he would maybe miss 5 home runs in that year. However, it is just as likely that he could have caught a Black pitcher on a bad day or late inning and hit more home runs. Even Satchel Paige did not strike out everyone.
