Three synchronized headshots on bobbing targets from a moving platform at night on Easter Sunday after sitting still for hours......Skills. I still can't believe the pirates were naive enough to think they had any chance once the navy showed up.
@THEredrumrob10 жыл бұрын
No shit! Shooting FROM a moving platform would be challenging enough(though under the ideal conditions I could envision the sheer bulk of the vessel resulting in a rhythmic motion) but shooting from a moving platform onto another moving platform AND synchronizing all three shots?! That's some sick fuckin work right there!
@Closeoutracer10 жыл бұрын
You really think the Navy was that wreckless with Capt. Phillips life? That they would only use 1 sniper per pirate and risk failure on the bobbing sea by taking a headshot? Had you been in command, this would have been your strategy? A human life at risk is no place to look for "skills" accolades... do that at the range. 3 to 4 Seals targeting each pirate.. 9 to 12 men- Each with 50 BMG sniper rifles that can penetrate the lifeboat without deflection. A 50 caliber BMG sniper rifle bullet would leave an exit would the size of a dinner plate. 50 BMG rounds are strong enough to severe limbs.When you are looking for an absolutely certain outcome.. you use a more certain tactic. Don't be fooled by TV show hired "experts".. I would suggest the real encounter was not as risky.
@brookswade57748 жыл бұрын
Closeoutracer That's a brilliant tactic private Gump. Instead of 3, .556 rounds, let's put 12, 50 BMG rounds through the lifeboat. Captain Phillips will have a better chance. A better chance of taking a stray round.

@@Geowolf02 in civilian firearms training the preferred term is "neutralize. " you use enough force to neutralize the threat, and no more. Sometimes that means killing someone, and sometimes it means drawing down (Aka, "pointing your gun at them") and commanding them to drop the weapon, or stop whatever they're doing that's making them a threat. It seems like semantics, but you don't want to kill people if you don't have to, from a civilian side you don't want to end up in jail, and from a military perspective they may have intel you want, among other reasons. So, by using the phrase "neutralize the threat" you're conditioning your guy with the gun to not use more force than he has to in order to do his job.

Accoring to SOLAS(Safety of Life at Sea) in case of distress for example your ship is on fire that is out of control and you need to abandon ship once you get into freefall boat you have to take 1 seasickness pill immediately and consistently take 1 per day just because you have limited resources out there and you must not throw up if you do throw up you get dehydrated but the water for each person is limited per day until someone from the SAR(Search and Rescue) operation finds you. I dont think anyone can really fully understand Somali Pirates unless you live where they live and experience what they do, unlike a majority of the rest of the world they dont have any opportunities whatsoever.
@Alecxace11 жыл бұрын
it's pretty straight forward actually. They are broke, have no education, no jobs and essentially not economy to fall back on. but they got a fuck ton of guns and people hanging around doing nothing. So they do something about their situation which is to become pirates. And based on their track record I'd say they are doing quite well for themselves
@mumphy762511 жыл бұрын

Many countries all over the world are as poor as Somalia, even in USA. people have to live under bridges and look for food on dumpsters. Your argument is very lime excuse for kidnaping and asking several million dollars, I was reading they have gotten as much as 10 million. Yeah I would get your excuse and kidnap a millionaire and ask for 8 million dollars, since any poor person gets to do it, since we are poor.

@OriginalUnknown210 жыл бұрын
you know, not to question negotiation tactics, cuz i know nothing about them, but if they ask for food and water, wouldnt it be logical to put some sort of a sedative in them, that does its job after about 30 mins and does it good, so that they all pass out and they can be safely arrested and rescued? just a thought.
@keleflefboy8410 жыл бұрын
exactly my thought when i was eatching captain philips.
@COYDOGSBAND10 жыл бұрын
keleflefboy84 I can tell you that would've been a TERRIBLE idea.No way to judge their weight etc, (also the amount of hydration/nutrition they got in them) so you could never just guess the dosage. Might as well poison instead of sedate...Remember the hostage thing in the Russian theater when they tried the sedation gas? Yeah..they ended up killing the hostages too (by overdose).
@COYDOGSBAND10 жыл бұрын
---not to mention that the entire sedation idea has never worked anyways. Even since the Cold War spy days, they would try it and end up with a corpse half the time. I watched that BS movie you guys mean, and it was mostly horsecrap but quasi-entertaining. The real deal was they sniped, then one operator (maybe two) climbed down the tow line, hopped in and and shot the pirates again. It is in Mark Owen's book as well I believe. That WAS the best tactical approach, I'd guess
@keleflefboy8410 жыл бұрын

@OriginalUnknown210 жыл бұрын
***** oh yea, no i get that, im not blaming any1 for killing those 3 pirates (if thats what you meant) and yea i also know that, but i just assumed if they are all hungry, they'd all eat at the same time... but then again it could knock them out at different times still, so yea sedative in food isnt the best idea, but there's always gas or something :P or not... i suppose lethal force is easier, and trust me, im not the person that values criminal lives but if there could be a way, it could be used instead of killing :)
@OhioOwns5 жыл бұрын
i'd say the way Tom Hanks conveys what happens in the movie was probably pretty accurate. that had to be scary as hell, even knowing the Navy is RIGHT THERE and you could still be killed at any moment.

This mission was assigned specifically to the Navy Tier 1 Seal Team known as DevGrup (or Team 6), whose members are ultra-elite operators above the rest. Most people believe that all Navy Seals are the same, but they are wrong. Seal Team 6 stands out as the best of the best, above all of the other Seal Teams. In short: Not all Seals are the same.

The other 9 crew filed and won a lawsuit against the company for violating the threat assessment !!! They were gagged by the company from telling the truth about the incident, because of the movie coming out !!! They are still yet to repay their debt from the rescue to the military and American taxpayers ???

The one question that surely must be asked is why there are even pirates in Somalia. For me the film portrayed an even deeper problem than just a couple of pirates kidnapping a captain - it highlighted global inequality and how people are pushed to commit piracy acts. But in the society and world we live in today, we seem to fail in understanding this.
@YTviewer11811 жыл бұрын
"why there are even pirates in Somalia?" You just answered your own question... "people are pushed to commit piracy acts" They have nothing but their trade per se of taking ships, What more is there to survive and get what they need. You could say the same for anywhere else, Desperation.
@redknight80111 жыл бұрын
yeah, despite them being clearly criminals...I did feel bad for them, a bit. I have never been to Somalia, but I have personally seen some pretty poor parts of the world in Africa and Asia and it is sad that more can't be done. I don't agree with their piracy and nor will I ever support it, but I do understand it. All I can do for now is hope that such a situation as this will prompt the next Somali child that is asked/pushed towards piracy to reconsider it just a bit and do something a little more productive. I would assume piracy is down a bit though in the region...but I don't have any knowledge of it to say for certain.

Real question: Why can the pirates absolutely not reach the land? What would happen if they reach the land
@almightyhandsanitizer44404 жыл бұрын
I think its because if they get too close to Somali it might break the International Laws regarding borders and i'm guessing most countries would take that as an aggression, and it might ruin international political power in that region.
@arbaaztorgal6894 жыл бұрын
International border laws and also they can torture Phillips to get some other sensitive information.
@giaa_7773 жыл бұрын
The comments above could be correct. The reasons are it would make the operation 100x harder because once they reach Somalia nobody knows where they would go (untraceable) and they can’t just barge in to a country they have no connections with. There’s also groups like Al Shabab who have bombs and will terrorise anyone from the west, especially soldiers from the USA.

@9:56 that's not two SEALs. That's a 24th STS operator and SEAL. The OP wasn't as impressive as the movie and documentary portray it to be. The shots didn't require tier 1 snipers, but they were there and took it. Any SEAL with a 416 could have got the job done. Talk to anyone who was actually on the mission (privately), other than NSRO and you'll get a much less exciting story.
