I heard him in an interview explaining this. There's a point in the lyrics that makes it clear...."priest is on the phone..." which made it clear to me along with, "your mom disowned you" i knew he got her pregnant but was so solidly willing to follow thru with her even though she was distant, confused and obviously, scared

Open your mind: such a story is the ‘reality’ in most places 😮 and so, many people can understand the song and relate - this video explanation seems to assume everyone except you doesn’t understand the song.
