2024 UPDATE: So I’ve been gone a while and a lot has changed. Spoilers for TTL Ahead: So Elmyra IS actually now back… of course she is XD BUT to be fair this didn’t happen until recently with season 2 (not including the intro) She is also cast by Cree Summer again whom was the original cast member in TTA and also the one who publicly announced in the first place that herself and even the whole character would not be returning for this new show (these where the facts I was dealing with at the time). But yes to the countless people telling me “I’m wrong” or worse, please keep in mind that hindsight is a thing. This video is over 3 years old now, so with these new developments of course I would go back and make changes if I could (certainly to my conclusion). BUT at the time, those were the facts and these were my theoretical understandings of those facts. Now, 3 years later, we have new facts. She’s back. And that's okay. We can be wrong in retrospect. But although she's back, she is still not the same animal lover-turned-abuser character that she was before and I believe my arguments in my video are still valid reasons for them deciding to change her character for this new show. That being said… I could be wrong again XD

The largest mistake in your video was saying that something can be okay back then but not now. I claim if it's okay now or not. But I will say that if something isn't okay now, then it never was okay. The only reason something was accepted back then is because it had to be discovered that it's wasn't okay. For example, there was never a time when slavery was okay. We just had to discover that fact. There was never a time when racism was okay, or homophobia/transphobia. Although I do agree that PETA sucks. It went from an organization that had good intentions, to just being an organization scolds you for anything they view as animal abuse. Basically, if you don't worship animals as gods, PETA will scold you.

I'm only just now seeing this video. Wonderful job first off. As a child of 49y old, my circle of friends and I obsessed over tiny toons, even being seniors in high school. Elmyra was our fave character. The sugary sweet annoying-ness of her only made her more entertaining. Yes it was a different time, but really a WHOLE lot different than the original WB slapstick of decades past. I have seen one episode of the new show and couldn't bring myself to see another. I didn't see why they wouldn't have her back since they changed literally everything else about the characters. Lol I will go check out season 2 to to see exactly how they massaged her in but glad to know Cree Summer returned to the role. Great video tho

I just don’t understand how someone could miss the point of her character so hard as they have; her ENTIRE character is centered around a lack of self awareness and perspective taking. How have we fallen so hard as a society that at a time where we are obsessed with empathy and perspective that we can’t collectively pick up on satirizing what lacking in those departments can look like? We genuinely need a new satire boom like we had in the ‘60-70s!

All that Elmyra needs is a slight rework to her 'antagonistic' approach to animals. Keep her enthuasism and love for animals intact, but have all of her exploits simply backfire and not turn out as she hopes, while she realizes something went wrong. Make her into someone who always tries her best to do the right thing, but something always goes wrong in the process, as if she has some sort of curse on her. It would be even funnier to make her hyper-intelligent and genually meaning well, but nothing ever goes according to plan, no matter how much time and effort she puts into getting it right (kind of like the Brain, now that I think about it). And, since we're on the subject of Elmyra, what about Montana Max? Is he in the new show? Because unlike Elmyra, Max was definately aware of his actions harming the other characters and he used his money to get his way all the time. Max was intentionally going out of his way to harm the others simply because he could get away with it and knew he could. Tormenting the other toons was his entertainment. I think there even was an episode or two in which Max and Elnyra butted heads because of his blatantly malicious actions.

Elmira is one of those "acceptable at the time" examples from decades prior that are considerably worse in retrospect. I think the biggest thing that initially omitted, and later re-designed Elmira for the reboot, is views on consent. Consent has always been an important thing, but in recent years it has seen more focus in the public eye, even compared to the 90's. On top of that, Elmira disregards consent in often torturous scenes that last for minutes at a time. Torture is also a thing that was always bad, but examples look worse in retrospect. There's also the Way it was presented. Yes, it was represented as a bad thing to do, but I guarantee that the visceral, albeit brilliantly artistic, way it was emphasized on screen with little warning, would trigger anyone who has experience on the receiving end of similar trauma. Trauma was much more overlooked in the 90's, as we were still in the tail-end of parents saying "suck it up, wimp" without actually examining problems further than skin deep. So some of the attitudes have changed on things that were mostly bad to begin with. Background stress is different from then, and tolerances have moved from puritanical to therapeutic.

What I saw as the main problem with her original character was that she rarely faced any consequence for her actions, and when she did, she was too unintelligent to grasp that she had it coming. This was likely because, as you noted, she never INTENDED any harm, and of course because status quo is necessary, but it was still jarring that outside of each individual episode, no one did anything about her. Especially in a setting where teachers can step in and help her and her victims. I don't see the issue today being that people don't understand the "don't try this at home" nature of it. But we have gone through many cultural improvements when it comes to students bullying or otherwise being insufferable to one another, intentionally or not. Her entire schtick just doesn't work in a school setting now where students are better prepared to identify these behaviors in their peers and faculty are trained to assist properly. (I have worked 18 years as a teacher, so this is where I'm coming from.) And personally, I found it awkward even in the 90's just how inconsistently the dynamics at play were applied. In old Bugs Bunny cartoons, it was understood that Elmer was a human and Bugs was an animal. In Tiny Toons, this was malleable and... weird. Do the students stand as equals, as people? Or are the animal characters treated differently? It seemed to depend on the episode and the writer, and it almost always came up through Elmyra. (I haven't seen any of the new series, so I can't comment on her ultimate inclusion there or if any of this dynamic I found to be off as a child comes up now.)

Man, what a crazy trip Looniversity's development is. First Elmyra was said to not return, and now, she is coming back (with Cree Summer actually returning to reprise her role). Although there is a good chance the reboot will end up either toning down her character so she is not abusing animals in a way that can be easily imitated, or changed completely to the point where she is not obsessed with taking random animals home and caring for them in the wrong way due to her poor choice of methods (like how they changed Buster and Babs to being siblings and how Fifi will be changed to a poet and minor character to avoid being accused of double standards after kicking Pepe out of future Looney Tunes projects).

I think the other reasoning is the origins of her schtict. Everyone recognizes she is physically based off of Elmer Fudd but her perosnailty and running gag is actually based off of the abominable snowman. He himself was a direct parody of Lenny from Of Mice and Men. This was more noticeable in his character than Elmira as he would call everyone George and obsess specifically over rabbits. It is clear to see however, that Elmira was directly cut from his cloth. Lenny was a character with an intellectual disabilty in a world that was insensitive and misunderstanding of such a concept. The book was written to help point out the societal injustices of this issue and it is one that still plagues us today. Stigma on disabilities, especially cognative and mental health is a real problem that has made very little progress compared to other minority groups. The abominable snowman took what was supposed to be a serious and nuanced character for nuanced study and broke it down into the very negative comedic steriotype the classic was trying to help fight. Elmira is the same. You even recognize her as psycho and too stupid to understand. You'll notice the abominable snowman doesn't show up anymore either and I think it's because it is now being recognized as an offensive blackface of intellectual disabilty. You can claim this as hypersensitive but unless you are part of that community and recognize the harm yhe misportrayal does firsthand, you can't speak on it reliably. It's the same as representation in old cartoons of minorities in a wrongful ways. No one took issue at the time but the subject of those "jokes" but now we have the emotionally intellegence to understand that it was wrong. By claiming adults were more aware in the past allowing it you are aligning yourself with the wrong side of history here a bit and may want to rethink your stance..I dont mind her removal in general though because she was a one note character and there lies the other potential reason. How often will you really want to have this same dumb joke played over? We've had her joke in past characters like the snowman and baby bear for nearly a century and all it boils down to is "character tries to help, character instead hurts." How exciting. So many possibilities. With a show that has such a large cast and is trying to set itself apart from It's prior iteration, why would you waste time and energy bringing back one that is so limited to its one gag kf the prior show? Especially one that failed you on another attempt to do a simliar thing with your properties and may be now more acticely considered a negative portrayal of a minority group? I think this is an act of nostalgia blinding people to the fact it is just a poor choice in a lot of regards and lashing out because babies want what they want mindlessly. What really would she bring to the show? How often could they ise her before the repetativeness makes her presence more unwelcome. I feel the same fantasy defending her now would have been indifferent or comiserating of her getting screentime if this wasn't a thing. I also feel if they just kept her off the show and Cree Summers did not Trump Tweet anything, most would not notice. It's when it's made a big deal by manipulative media like yourself, more focused on viewership and thus personal gain that it becomes a thing in fashion by the propaganda spin. It's really shameful because she is a very outdated and antiprigressive portrayal if a community that has been one of the the least well treated even in today's society, which has only suffered for it. People wanting to push their own careers at the expense of the most vulnerable are really pathetic, uncreative, desperate and disgusting human beings. Can there really not be a better character than this? Do we REALLY need to keep having it come back to show how little we have changed since eour grandparents and great grandparents generation where we will laugh at those with different needs like children ourselves bullying that kid in the class?

As a child who might have been considered a watered down version of Elmyra (in addition to being a syndication viewer at a young age) I would love to see Elmyra brought back and shown as a dynamic character who has grown in her ability to see how her actions hurt others and is then intent on making amends. Like maybe she is shown looking after a couple of younger human children and observes them being a bit rough with a pet and she intervenes to correct the behavior. Maybe she could explain to them some stuff about animal body language and ways that are appropriate to interact with animals so that they don't always want to run away from you. I understand that this would remove a lot of the conflict that drives the plot and thus another antagonist would have to be found. But I would like to see her learn from her mistakes. Maybe she ran out of room in the pet cemetery, maybe she had a period of time following the death of a pet in which she was not with any animals and realized that she missed the ones she hugged to death. I don't know.

I'm too young to remember Tiny Toon Adventures so therefore I've never actually watched it. But although I know she isn't a real person, if she were then I would hope that someday she would realize that she is hurting animals (however this also means that she will have to live with the guilt of hurting other animals in the past). And this is coming from somebody who still feels horrible about the fact that I basically abused so many of my budgies as a kid but didn't realize it until I was older.

Joke is, just like Fudd, Elmyra is a HUMAN. This allows her, for better or worse to SEVERELY abuse the food chain or her position. She also looks like a Harkonnen. So this sets up an interesting dynamic, are the animals smarter or tougher than she is? "When someone tunes a [musical instrument,] they adjust it so that it produces the right notes."

@@fzcbh4698 I’ve always said that if they bring back Tiny Toons, then Lola should be in it as the sports/PE teacher, as that make perfect sense to her character, so I completely agree. There is also potential for things to get a little heated from time to time as well, because Lola is considered to be very attractive to the other toons, so it would be funny to see Buster, Plucky and Hamton, get all jellified and goosebumpy around her, and therefore making the girls, Babs, Shirley and Fifi a little annoyed and of course a little jealous. Obviously I don’t want this to happen all the time, but I think as a plot catalyst to a singular episode, it would be cool to see. Penelope Pussycat was also cut from Space Jam: A New Legacy despite only doing Pepe's shtick once.

@jaggin75612 жыл бұрын
The morality comes in some play but to me I think its minor compared to the studio reason. It more so has to do with the ignorance of WB and Steven not understanding Pinky and the Brain. They thought the 2 would work better as a trio. As well as they loved Elmyra from Tiny Toons so much that the show actually gave her 2 backdoor pilots to their own series. After Tom Ruegger, the creator, tried to convince them that Pinky and the Brain only worked as a duo not a trio, they forcefully made them get another character to make them 3. So they chose Elmyra and Steven Spielberg also loved her as well so that was a no brainer. Making the spinoff could have made the studio happy. But unlike Disney, WB did not understand their audience just like now so that series became an ultimate failure that caused the crew of Tiny Toons and Animaniacs to basically be blacklisted in Hollywood for that terrible series. Yeah they found other jobs here and there even Tom and Paul Rugg leading a couple shows like The 7D and Pac Man 2013 show but when it comes to anything big they were not a part of it and nearly everyone else on that staff. Including the animaniacs reboot and they weren't taking Tom's agent phone calls. So since P, E, and B did so poorly they didn't want anything to do with her anymore damaging the duo to WB so bad or got to the point where they ignored it so much as it was no longer #1 in their eyes.

I disagree with the assessments that Almirah would have created a backlash, other than from PETA (But PETA would backlash against anything). But just the fact that Slapstick isn't a popular form of comedy currently. Partly because longer form narrative story telling us popular and there isn't a refresh after every episode, meaning characters like Almirah will need to have character growth, which I don't think we would like, and her pets would also have to deal with some of these consequences as well. Also any reboot of her character, would probably not be that great, the 90s loved to take old stereotypes, and subvert them, to the Extreme. This was a character of the time, and probably should stay there to be enjoyed in nostalgia. Buster, Babs and Plucky...
