LOL i didn't need to watch it to know it because of residency. call it red tape. you guys are kinda struck in the middle, too young to get retirement residency, too old to go down the scholar route, the requirement is just too strict for most people to even consider them. I do hope they expand their immigration policies but that for future people, it not really going to do much now. we will see how europe goes... every place has a charm of it own.

Sorry to see you go. I myself have been here for 26 years and counting my Wife who is a local and myself own a stand alone house here on the outskirts of Beijing north of the sixth ring Road. I’m within 25 minutes of one of the Great Wall sections. I don’t often travel into downtown if I can avoid it I do love things here now that I’ve retired something I had to do because of the mandatory retirement age here for pilots being set at 60. And you are right the only way that’s a possibility is because my wife is Chinese. What struck home with me was what you mentioned about the possibility of tensions between these two big countries. I really have no desire to move back to the US and I do like it here but recently I’ve been wondering if we shouldn’t have some kind of backup plan. I do spend at least a few months in Europe specifically UK every year but the UK is not very easy to just up and move to. Their Visa requirements are quite formidable. So I’m currently looking at my alternatives. I’ve not visited Portugal yet. I almost did two weeks ago, while I was in the UK, but we couldn’t get the timing worked out. Definitely, Europe is the most attractive option I wish you luck in Portugal
@TripBitten
@TripBitten 6 ай бұрын
Yes, the tensions aren't the biggest concerns... but they are there in the back of my mind. I would hate to see something happen, but I also can't control it. Moving to Portugal is only a little easier because of my wife (just like you here). If we could have stayed and done what we wanted, it would have been a harder decision, but we are happy to move forward on good terms and not having hate or bitterness towards China. Good luck in the future and hopefully you won't need a backup plan.

Europe in the long run is not a good place to be as it will lose the competition of its industry and lack of resources and people will become poorer. The chaos will be back to Europe ahead other Western countries as the Global South becomes more independent with the back of the BRICK.

Wow. Interesting u say u want to move and live in the UK in your retirement. I’m the opposite. I’m living in London, Uk and would love to move and retire to China. Uk is becoming horribly expensive, crimes on the increase, and the politic is just as bad as the US. I’m planning on doing a trip to China sometime (field research). Would u be open for a meet-up and a chat?

Feel sad to hear that u r leaving. As a Chinese, I also feel it's too expensive. I live in Suzhou, a tier-2 city in China, but still too expensive for most people which could cost 4 million RMB to buy a 100m2 house. This is maybe the biggest problem of China's economy. Anyway, thank you for your videos and hope one day you can come back. I still expect more videos from you.

Rent is very affordable and owning is very expensive in China, the factors are: For marriage you need to own. No Property tax, the nearly artificial higher prices will not reflect in a higher tax bill. Rent is low as culture is that you should only pay 15% of income, not 40% like in U.S. As the owner has no tax liability, rent doesn't have to be 30% higher to cover for it. Condo association fees is only $35/month, while in U.S it would be $350 as finding a maintenance man who is not a dug addicted felon requires a $100K salary.
@tonysofla
@tonysofla 6 ай бұрын
Or could it be that the high price includes the developers cost of the 70yr land lease from the Province? I don't know how high it is, but it could be seen as a one-time upfront cost of "property tax", unlike U.S where you pay 2% of the value every year forever.

Living the simple life in an agrarian setting sounds wonderful when you have the energy and enthusiasm to tend the chicken, maintain the home, cultivate the land. After about 10 years, your ‘simple life’ on the farm becomes too demanding. The numerous chicken manure, scattered eggs, and daily feeding become laborious rather than a joy. And the weeds seems to grow faster than you can pull them out, and bugs and rodents devour your vegetables before you even notice their sprouting. Good luck, keep us informed.

All the best to you. I lived in Hong Kong for 12 year, and I will be leaving HK in a few months. Like you, I longed to own a house with a big garden, which is not possible in HK except for the ultra rich. So I am moving to Malaysia where I grew up, sort of like a completing the full circle, Malaysia --> UK --> HK --> Malaysia. At a fraction of the HK price, I get to own a 3000 sq ft house with 4000 sq ft garden, in a secured estate. Please continue this channel, as I am sure lots of people are interested to see how you and Yvon get on in Portugal.

Hi Trip, sorry to see you leaving China. The reasons you mentioned all make sense. Overall China govt and Chinese people do not very welcome other ethnics to immigrate to china. As a chinese I kinda agree. It's not about racism. It's probably more about culture. Also living in rural area without knowing the local language can be very challenging. Anyways I wish you will have a happy life in Europe. Hopefully you can travel to china in the future :)
@TripBitten

Yes, I understand why China and Chinese people might be cautious to increase immigration, especially when they look at Europe or the US. If it isn't done right, or if people aren't immigrating for the right reasons and willing to integrate into society, it can cause problems. I agree with you on that point. Thanks for the wishes and hopefully we can come back and visit in the future.

Foreigners buying properties has more conditions than Chinese but not that difficult. Many foreigners have bought properties. It is true that first tier cities in China are expensive just like New York, London, Tokyo etc. Furthermore, landed houses are even more expensive in first tier cities in China as compared to apartments. @@yuegonghuamei6685a recent study that shown happiest population among all the country in the globe is Portugal, Netherland and Iceland but do take it with huge pinch of salt because China has been leading the past 3 years suddenly gone from the top 3/5/10 ranking. If one person decided to leave, they can have more than hundred reason and excuses. I bet alot of expat who left went back to their home country and migrated to somewhere else did not take consideration into current global inflation and energy crisis. Moving to Europe is definitely a weird choice because they are facing 3x fold of energy price. The strong USD is crashing every country economies, if their new country doesn't have a complete supply chain or cheap gas/energy, everything is heading south. If China and U.S tension lead to direct conflict, do y'all really think living in Portugal won't get affected? Huh😅 Good freaking luck.

@@TripBitten I have American citizen friends who bought properties in China. They don't have Chinese partners. Also, don't worry about the tension between the two governments that will affect an average US citizen's life in China. I'm going to move to China soon and I know the police will not knock at my door. But good luck on your new adventure. Life needs a change sometimes.

In some ways, not the Visa part, it's why after living in NYC in the 80's (I was also born there), I needed to get to more green. Got as far as Berkeley with easy access to the hills, but then after more years (a couple in Mexico), I've ended up in the ranch lands of SE AZ about 10 mi N of MX border. Thanks for all your helpful videos on China. Much appreciated. Best wishes for your new life in Portugal. (My cousin and partner live in rural Portugal but can't recall name of town. They're very happy there.)

Sorry to see you guys leaving. Very true, Apartments, especially first tier cities are too expensive. With limited arable land, not much China can do to have more houses with garden in the cities. Portugal is great place to live too. i travel between Florida and Chengdu, really a pain for the long flight hours. I'am worried about geopolitical stuff between these two super powers too, especially Taiwan issue in the next decade.

sorry,I comment in Chinese.

thanks a lot for your honest video about you leaving China. I also left China even with a good salary because I wasn't too satisfied with the way they were treating students in the school that I was working for and about all the things around me. I really liked all the scenaries in China and all the facilities and apps but, there are many things that can't work out for foreigners even if many chinese are really awesome. I like your honesty as I told you before and I wish you the best. Just stay true all the time that's what the world needs. peace and see you someday in Europe.

I agree if you want a homesteading lifestyle it’s hard to stay in China. It would be helpful for your audience to gain a different perspective of China from expats in Europe too. Portugal is good, I’ve not been there but as I understand Portugal is a great destination for some Canadians to move to or retire in, something about tax/pension agreements are more pragmatic for foreigners than in China. Enjoy Portugal, all the farm fresh eggs, organic produce and ripe fruits picked from your garden, perhaps some lovely goats and rabbits… have a great abundant life living off the fat of the land 🙂
