I do hope they expand their immigration policies but that for future people, it not really going to do much now. we will see how europe goes... every place has a charm of it own.

Sorry to see you go. I myself have been here for 26 years and counting my Wife who is a local and myself own a stand alone house here on the outskirts of Beijing north of the sixth ring Road. I’m within 25 minutes of one of the Great Wall sections. I don’t often travel into downtown if I can avoid it I do love things here now that I’ve retired something I had to do because of the mandatory retirement age here for pilots being set at 60. And you are right the only way that’s a possibility is because my wife is Chinese. What struck home with me was what you mentioned about the possibility of tensions between these two big countries. I really have no desire to move back to the US and I do like it here but recently I’ve been wondering if we shouldn’t have some kind of backup plan. I do spend at least a few months in Europe specifically UK every year but the UK is not very easy to just up and move to. Their Visa requirements are quite formidable. So I’m currently looking at my alternatives. I’ve not visited Portugal yet. I almost did two weeks ago, while I was in the UK, but we couldn’t get the timing worked out. Definitely, Europe is the most attractive option I wish you luck in Portugal
@TripBitten6 ай бұрын
Yes, the tensions aren't the biggest concerns... but they are there in the back of my mind. I would hate to see something happen, but I also can't control it. Moving to Portugal is only a little easier because of my wife (just like you here). If we could have stayed and done what we wanted, it would have been a harder decision, but we are happy to move forward on good terms and not having hate or bitterness towards China. Good luck in the future and hopefully you won't need a backup plan.

Europe in the long run is not a good place to be as it will lose the competition of its industry and lack of resources and people will become poorer. The chaos will be back to Europe ahead other Western countries as the Global South becomes more independent with the back of the BRICK.
@merryweather49886 ай бұрын
Wow. Interesting u say u want to move and live in the UK in your retirement. I’m the opposite. I’m living in London, Uk and would love to move and retire to China. Uk is becoming horribly expensive, crimes on the increase, and the politic is just as bad as the US. I’m planning on doing a trip to China sometime (field research). Would u be open for a meet-up and a chat?

Feel sad to hear that u r leaving. As a Chinese, I also feel it's too expensive. I live in Suzhou, a tier-2 city in China, but still too expensive for most people which could cost 4 million RMB to buy a 100m2 house. This is maybe the biggest problem of China's economy. Anyway, thank you for your videos and hope one day you can come back. I still expect more videos from you.
@TripBitten6 ай бұрын
Yes, the prices are too high even in tier-2 cities. Hopefully, Yvon and I will come back to visit in the future. Thanks for the wishes.
@tonysofla6 ай бұрын
Rent is very affordable and owning is very expensive in China, the factors are: For marriage you need to own. No Property tax, the nearly artificial higher prices will not reflect in a higher tax bill. Rent is low as culture is that you should only pay 15% of income, not 40% like in U.S. As the owner has no tax liability, rent doesn't have to be 30% higher to cover for it. Condo association fees is only $35/month, while in U.S it would be $350 as finding a maintenance man who is not a dug addicted felon requires a $100K salary.
@tonysofla6 ай бұрын
Or could it be that the high price includes the developers cost of the 70yr land lease from the Province? I don't know how high it is, but it could be seen as a one-time upfront cost of "property tax", unlike U.S where you pay 2% of the value every year forever.

Living the simple life in an agrarian setting sounds wonderful when you have the energy and enthusiasm to tend the chicken, maintain the home, cultivate the land. After about 10 years, your ‘simple life’ on the farm becomes too demanding. The numerous chicken manure, scattered eggs, and daily feeding become laborious rather than a joy. And the weeds seems to grow faster than you can pull them out, and bugs and rodents devour your vegetables before you even notice their sprouting. Good luck, keep us informed.

Hi Trip, sorry to see you leaving China. The reasons you mentioned all make sense. Overall China govt and Chinese people do not very welcome other ethnics to immigrate to china. As a chinese I kinda agree. It's not about racism. It's probably more about culture. Also living in rural area without knowing the local language can be very challenging. Anyways I wish you will have a happy life in Europe. Hopefully you can travel to china in the future :)

Yes, I understand why China and Chinese people might be cautious to increase immigration, especially when they look at Europe or the US. @@TripBitten The sooner China beat US in global leadership and economic supremacy , the better chance for everyone else in the world to live in peace and prosperity. With the things are going in America, it is no longer a real democracy.

Sorry to see you guys leaving. Very true, Apartments, especially first tier cities are too expensive. With limited arable land, not much China can do to have more houses with garden in the cities. Portugal is great place to live too. i travel between Florida and Chengdu, really a pain for the long flight hours. I'am worried about geopolitical stuff between these two super powers too, especially Taiwan issue in the next decade.

sorry,I comment in Chinese.

Thanks for the wishes. I plan to continue the same topic about China and the world. I might focus a little more on China and Europe, but the videos hopefully won't change too much.

Actually I am very interested about Portugal and the journey of your dream setting up a small farm. Either way I think what ever topic u create, you have done it objectively and I think that’s a plus of your channel.

thanks a lot for your honest video about you leaving China. I also left China even with a good salary because I wasn't too satisfied with the way they were treating students in the school that I was working for and about all the things around me. I really liked all the scenaries in China and all the facilities and apps but, there are many things that can't work out for foreigners even if many chinese are really awesome. I like your honesty as I told you before and I wish you the best. Just stay true all the time that's what the world needs. peace and see you someday in Europe.

Yes, there are good and bad things about living here and has foreigners it can be hard to adjust. Thanks for the wishes and maybe one day we will run into each other in Europe.

I agree if you want a homesteading lifestyle it’s hard to stay in China. It would be helpful for your audience to gain a different perspective of China from expats in Europe too. Portugal is good, I’ve not been there but as I understand Portugal is a great destination for some Canadians to move to or retire in, something about tax/pension agreements are more pragmatic for foreigners than in China. Enjoy Portugal, all the farm fresh eggs, organic produce and ripe fruits picked from your garden, perhaps some lovely goats and rabbits… have a great abundant life living off the fat of the land 🙂

Take care, 14 years staying in China is a good life experience, life is a non-stopping journey, explore new places can broaden your views. I remember my master told me: different lifetime period do different things, that's life.
@TripBitten6 ай бұрын
Yes, life is a journey and it is important not to get stuck and resentful. Moving on now will leave us with fond memories of China and we might travel back in the future. There are many roads to take and some lead back to happy places we have already visited.
