I actually think the reason Mal didn't undo the spell on her mom is because she can't. Fairy Godmother implied that the way to break the spell is for Maleficent to learn to love more. Perhaps like the Beast, the spell can only be broken by one especific way: learning to love. My bet is if there was a Descendants 4 it would be about Mal and Ben's kid finding his/her lizard grandma and teaching her to love again. Perhaps Maleficent will turn back to a dragon and later her fairy form, because of her love for grandchild.

Personally I think the reason Maleficent is still a lizard might be due to mal not knowing the true nature of the spell she used to turn her mom into a lizard, I mean Mal's sole concern at that moment was saving her friends and she had no clue what the spell would do resulting in her not being able to reverse it

The reason she hasn't turned back because of the island is because it wasn't evil magic that turned Maleficent into a lizard. It was love(ie: GOOD). The island only negates EVIL magic. At the end of Descendants 3, the kids to back to see their mothers so it's implied that Maleficent is still on the island, and not in a box, and probably in a semi-open environment. This doesn't exclude the possibility of someone kidnapping her though.

Malificent didnt turn back to her normal self when she and mal went back to the island because EVIL nagic doesnt work there and the spell that made her turn into a into how much love she has in her heart (lizard) in the first place was by the fairy god mothers wand and that wand if filled with GOOD magic (but im not saying you can use it for bad though,just use some good spells to do bad) and since the island wont let any evil magic and evil magic only she stayed as a lizard but to be honest this information doesnt really matter since we dont even know what happened to her but yeah thats probably why she stayed as a lizzard (well lets just she did stay as a lizard)

You can undo the spell without the love in her heart being much bigger that's what they said at the end of descendants 1she strength to the size of the love in her heart to the loving a heart got bigger than she would return back to normal

Mal didnt turn Maleficent into a lizard. Maleficent turned herself into a lizard because that is the size of her love yall literally put the scene where fairy godmother explains this in the video. The thing that isnt explained is whether or not the spell was good magic or evil magic. If it was an evil spell it would've been undone when she went to the isle because evil magic doesn't work there. That's the reason people wanted fairy godmothers wand it's the only magic that would work on the isle.

On the Isle, evil magic doesn't work. The magic Mal used to turn her mother into a lizard was not evil, as you said. She won because she used magic from the heart. So no maleficent didn't had to turn back into a lizard
