I always thought it may have been due to the same way Sasori was able to dispel the Edo tensei. Since Kakashi had forgiven him he had no regrets or any attachments to the world and thus could shake it off. Sakumo waited for Kakashi I believe. Much how all Kakashi had was his father, all Sakumo had was his son as well at the time of his death. It makes sense to me that he wants to see basically how things turned out in Kakashis' life, did he die properly or make an arguably poor decision like he himself did, questions a father would have for his child. Sakumo died in turbulance, his mind clouded with so much being thrown against him and leaving behind a son with a very uncertain future, it makes sense that he couldn't or wouldn't pass on and instead chose to stay in limbo, contemplating the life he lived and being there for Kakashi when his time arrived. OR OR OR since it was a straight up selfishish sui he simply didn't get to move on until he made right on it and by having that long moment with Kakashi he did that.

I didn’t even understand the concept of what death was when he did his act. And now as a grown man, I can beyond say that his actions have shaped the person I am and will be… Both good and bad. I over love and attach to others. Yet have such bad trust issues and often push others away when I actually want the opposite. I go into fits of depression and rage for no reason and have problems processing raw emotions. Not because I’m not mature but because I’m to invested into every situation that those emotions are presented from. And I don’t think I could ever have kids myself because I’m beyond scared I’ll end up killing myself also someday in a manic depression and I don’t want to perpetuate the cycle of sadness onward.. /: if you need help please get it people. I think your theory may be close, but even if you assume that Sakumo was able to ascend to the pure land after he and Kakashi had their talk, we don't know when Kabuto was going around collecting bodies to use reincarnation. If he had tried before Pain attacked the village, then Sakumo's soul would have been in Limbo as you mentioned, and we don't know for sure if you can reanimate again if your first time trying to bind the soul fails.

What if Sakumo’s tombstone is just there as a memento and the body isn’t actually there. What if after his suicide due to him abandoning a mission he was refused the burial in the hero cemetary and instead got cremated and his ashes were spread as he was unworthy (in the eyes of thr village at the time) of being buried with ninja’s who perished accomplishing their missions? Maybe the stone is there cause Kakashi asked for it to be set there, while he was in the Anbu, as a postume honorification of his father since he understood his father’s beliefs about friends, wich he grew to share as he became older. Maybe at that point the village was more inclined to let Kakashi have some memorabilia of his dad being a tombstone in the cemetary where he could go and « talk » to him. Maybe I’m wrong and it’s just his soul in limbo but maybe his DNA is just spread in the wind.

Perhaps Kabuto tried to revive Sakumo before the Pain invasion, when that failed (because his spirit was in limbo), he figures something was wrong, and so didn't try again. So Sakumo could have been revived, but Kabuto didn't bother because it didn't work the first time, and Orochimaru didn't have his body (as Kabuto had it).

Kabuto being a Hatake clan member works. He has a somewhat similar appearance to Kakashi and sakumo with the white hair and relatively middle of the road build, is exceptionally talented even at a young age, has excellent Chakra control (admittedly, we don't really know if this is a hatake thing, but it kinda sounds like the white light blade and how chidori works). If true, he'd probably be a distant relative but it makes sense.

As someone who wants to some day, maybe, hopefully, be a writer I believe the stronger reasons for not bringing Sakumo back were that everything the story could've done with him had already been done, same reason imo for why Jiraiya didn't come back during the fourth war and why Kashin Koji was so rejected, and that his skillset would've been really hard to make as impressive as his legend was. Had I been in Kishimoto's place I wouldn't have brought him back either. Also, why is cremation not more common in the Ninja World? You'd think everyone would be cremating their most dangerous ninja just in case Konoha, or someone else with access to the Edo Tensei, were to bring them back to life. I mean, I know that it is so Edo Tensei doesn't become actually impossible to pull off but it's odd that people that fought Tobirama at any point in history wouldn't just assume Edo Tensei was a jutsu that Konoha would pull off when threatened enough and that the whole forbidden jutsu classification was just Konoha propaganda.

It would've been cool to see Shisui and other legendary ninja fighting in the war and there weren't many logical ways for not bringing them into the war without just lazily shoving the idea aside like they did with Jiraiya, but as far as the story was concerned it would've just been clutter. Hell, the ones we actually got felt unnecessary like Pakura and Tenten's uncle because they weren't real characters, and the others that were real characters like Deidara or Zabuza had so little juice left that you could see the narrative struggling to give them a place in the story. Zabuza is actually a good case imo for why it wouldn't be a good idea to bring Sakumo back. Everything that could've been done thematically and character-wise with Sakumo was done with Zabuza and the readers/audience had a previous connection to him and Haku. The emotional warfare done through Edo Tensei, angering Kakashi, forcing him to watch a ninja he respects be degraded; all covered in his fight with Edo Zabuza. At best, a Kakashi vs Edo Sakumo fight would've shown a more intense reaction from Kakashi but we would've lacked all the context and baggage his fight with Edo Zabuza had since we never saw a living Sakumo react to things like we did with Zabuza. For Zabuza we had an entire arc where he was the main antagonist and we saw him go through pretty much every possible emotion he could've gone through; for Sakumo we only had that he was Kakashi's dad, he was a honorable man, and he took his own life but we never saw any of it. Volume after volume of fights with legendary ninja sounds cool but I bet you'd regret it had it actually happened.

During the fight with pain when Konoha is completely destroyed, would this have not destroyed all of the graves in that cemetery and thus preventing Sakumo from being brought back with Edo Tensai? I can’t remember if anyone else in the cemetery is brought back during the war arc or if there is explanation for this, just something I remember.

I think the cemetery isn’t located inside the village much like the memorial stone for the 3rd great ninja war we saw during the first bell test. So it would make sense that the cemetery wouldn’t be inside the village walls but close by in a field

My theory? With Sakumo being stronger than the 3, he could have been a major factor with the Kage against Madara (everyone can disagree all they want). Meaning, he may have been smart enough to break Kabuto’s control, even weaving the signs to continue the reanimation after Itachi broke it, because you said it yourself, he was filled with regret leaving Kakashi, I doubt he’d let someone pit him against his son, and like Minato, I think he’d want stick around to help. Kishimoto could have purposely excluded him because of this.

@@softicecream3322 I don't think that makes sense because in the Itachi novel Fugaku is called "Wicked Eye" Fugaku and is said to have been as important in the war as Kakashi and Minato, So Kabuto should have known about him. Usually when shinobi are given special names like "Yellow Flash" or "White Fang" or "Sasori of Red Sand" or in Fugaku's case "Wicked Eye" they are very well known to be extremely powerful ninja.

I mean, we can't just call suicide being selfish because we really don't know what happened and what experiences Sakumo had to face. I mean, yeah, Kakashi and her mother can be a bit disappointed because of Sakumo's decision, but can we really blame the guy? You yourself have stated that the village drove him to this conclusion. Can we really call this guy a disappointment and a selfish guy? I disagree with the part that he didn't stick to his own Ninja way. Did you not think that everyone that would commit suicide didn't think of the loved ones that he/she would leave behind? Do you really think that he didn't give consideration to Kakashi? The village is at fault here. The village failed not just Sakumo but also Kakashi and her mother. This guy literally wanted to save his colleagues and was willing to sacrifice the mission for them, but all he got was hatred. Furthermore, I must suggest that when creating a theory or, in this case, a video on connecting the gaps left by the storyline, we consider many perspectives because this had the tone that it was made from Kakashi's perspective, but why don't we take it from both Kakashi's and Sakumo's perspective? Everyone has their own side of the story, and I think this video didn't really portray Sakumo's intention and perspective.

What if, a member of the Nara clan tried to assassinate Sakumo using Shadow possession jutsu. In the midst of trying to resist the possession fell into the temptation to not fight back after all of the ridicule he had faced. We all know that Konoha Ninja's are often hired by other villages to accomplish a task in exchange for monetary rewards. What if the mission Sakumo had undertaken was high in monetary reward, which lines up with how dangerous it was seeing that multiple of his comrades were in the kind of danger that caused Sakumo to abandon the objective. If the client of that mission was another village, then there could have been diplomatic relations involved, for all we know there could have been a hostage held by the client which they were willing to hand over in exchange for the mission being completed. Maybe this hostage (ninja) was a spouse to a member of the Nara clan...

Just like you said, Kishimoto probably didn't know how to write the returns of Jiraiya and Sakumo. Or it could have been that he didn't have enough time or was just lazy. Still not seeing anything about Sakumo is a huge waste.. I mean given by his backstory, he was a big deal back in the day. So a filler episode of for example Kakashi's birth (also showing us his mother) or the failed mission which led to his depression would've been very much appreciated.
