In 1980, I visited Ecuador with my husband. I was 26 years old then. My husband was offered a good position in the country (as a scholar economist). It was the saddest experience I lived. I was confronted with brutal social inequalities for the first time. It was so sad. My English is limited and I cannot develop more. I hope things have improved for the indigenous people of Ecuador.

I'm in Guatemala now...I can definitely recommend Antigua and Lake Atitlan. Antigua has a vibe like San Miguel de Allende, but there are volcanoes you can hike and a lot of old ruins to explore. The lake is extremely beautiful...it's surrounded by more volcanoes and several traditional Mayan villages. Tons of amazing coffee shops everywhere. I love Mexico, but I think Guatemalan coffee is better. Wifi can be hit or miss, but there are a few coworking spots.
