This is why Sunday is cooking day for the whole week. You can have the same result with a homemade meal on a weekday if you plan for it on the weekend. But that also assumes you have enough time in your schedule on the weekend to meal prep

I think the main point of this video is that it's more convenient to just buy ready-made food. However, I don't like the lasagna example. I would say that it's a commitment to just go for a lasagna if you want to cook something. It's just not a dish that you can make in a few minutes. There are other dishes for that. What's more, depending on how well you plan, you can also prepare some of the work and freeze the portions at the end. So I can tell you what's even better than buying and eating ready meals. Eating at your mother's house. You don't have to buy ingredients or cook! easy win!

Yes, I get the points of comparison, but lasagne is something that should never be attempted on a week day. And it's not a healthy meal either, it's more for celebrations and special occasions. A fairer comparison would be a relatively quick curry with rice: same level of complexity but reasonable cooking time and good healthy options for high protein or low fat.

with my lasagne i make a huge batch and freeze it off in oven proof containers so all i need to do in the week is pop in the oven to cook

I do this with lasagna, cream chicken pasta, stews. Almost all of my food is meal prep just because I know if I don't do it, I won't eat during the week.
@TheXeemanАй бұрын
you missed out the fact that you reheated your ultra processed food in plastic. You're leeching phthalates and other endocrine disrupting chemicals. Not to mention theres probably a heck load of microplastics from the packaging and processing stage. You also chose a heck of a complicated recipe to cook from.
@AdlamGamingАй бұрын
Nice video! I’d love to see this experiment but with a recipe more in line with the ingredient list of the ready meal. I think if someone was making lasagna more often they’d likely have time servers as well and shortcuts that bring it somewhere between the two options here
@LepinayAlixАй бұрын
The time issue is a false issue. It's just a matter of planning. You can make the ragu (the meat sauce) on Sunday, you make enough for spaghetti bologonese that you cook on Monday and for the lasagna on Tuesday. Making a béchamel is quick in the making... you just need experience to make time ans space for cooking and some culinary knowledge to cook and enjoy it. My priority is my health so I prefer improving my skills to cook healthy managing my time and still have time to enjoy watching TV series, playing video game, etc etc... it's up to you.

When comparing the ingredients, you must look at the ingredient list instead of macronutrients for the quality of the ingredients. The only ingredients I see on that package that are not good are sugar and rapeseed oil (seed oils are bad). Plus I think that being in the UK, you probably have higher quality ingredients than we have in America. I'm a home cook and I work a job, and what I do is cook a large meal on the weekend and have leftovers for the week.
@Ebru3820Ай бұрын
Great video! I love how you displayed the comparison of both days parallel to each other. Yet I do believe you can cut the time for the homecooked meal drastically if you plan meals ahead and shop accordingly. And if you have a partner they can do the cleanup after or help with the meal, which is spending time together too. But alas, I do love my occasional cup noodles, so who am I to judge?
@loveinseattleАй бұрын
Valiant effort, but lasagna isn't exactly a weekday meal? Plus it usually yields a lot of servings that can be good for several days. Hopefully once you've made that lasagna you'd be good for the next two dinners at least? I cook from scratch for my family of 4 every single day, while working full time. I can't lie and say it's easy, because it isn't, and it definitely takes up a ton of my time, but I never have to look up recipes or do daily grocery trips. Usually I'm done the entire process of prepping, cooking, and cleaning up in 2 hours or so.

There's no way a home made lasagna costs more per portion than a shop bought one
@davidlewis1787Ай бұрын
I am sure that the ‘homemade food is more expensive’ argument was spawned by the junk food industry. I make all my food from scratch and my monthly food bill is less than £200
@lutra-lutraАй бұрын
Also, store bought lasagna has 2 servings, you can eat in in two days, and than get something else. Homemade is at least 6 servings, so you will have to eat it for one week or freeze it. it's really difficult to make one serving portion at home. That is why, us single poeple choose to get "ultra processed" (=convenient) food

Looks a bit unfair to me, the homemade recipe that was picked isn’t really a weekday meal. If a ready-made goo seems like the only solution then maybe it’s time to rethink what a regular dinner is. Home-cooked looks like it has a lot more ingredients (and the wild goose chase for herbs could have been cut, realistically - I just do without or have alternatives in the cupboard). Saying someone strapped for cash could have used the time to work instead is so grim. I’d hate normalising the grind at the expense of a couple of hours of freedom spent making something for yourself. At this point, let’s all optimise our sleep and work 20 hours a day. And finally, cooking can be a genuinely pleasant moment to unwind with your significant other - since that was mentioned in the ready-meal advantages. It also cuts a lot of the cooking/cleaning time.

Groceries have gotten so expensive in this country that ordering and getting ready meals are more cost effective and it’s so annoying and baffling 🤦🏽♀️

That's just not true in the slightest. Why are you lying? Ordering takeaway is cheaper than buying groceries?

@Michelleaneous_Ай бұрын
Wow - genuinely such a thoughtful and well-summised video! You really articulated everything so perfectly. I had an aunt who always used to call me lazy for eating ready meals or pre-prepared food while I was a student - but is it really lazy when you have more time on your hands to complete other priorities or to just... relax a little because you're a student with very little free time? It's a pretty privileged position to universally castigate these quick and convenient foods and those who consume them. I just try to save some money where I can to buy more expensive but less ultra-processed foods and I think that works out pretty well!
@veronikaceza8674Ай бұрын
Very good comparison !
@tacticalidiots2340Ай бұрын
If you do a weekly shop for common ingredients on say Saturday and also chop it all up so when you cook its just chucking it all together it's a lot easier. But it's still not easier than just buying a frozen meal and as someone who regularly does 7 days a week work the most complicated meal I do is stir fry with a bag of pre cut veggies only way home cooking is manageable is having more than 1 person in your household Also I don't know about you but I'd be drinking rum the whole cooking process 🤣
@George-j4cАй бұрын
Which one tasted better though? Maybe if the homemade one was superior (based on how they looked)you could have stripped out some of the ingredients to make a more comparable taste experience?

The microwaveable lasagna isn't UPF then?
@GavinWrenАй бұрын
Well, arguably it could be considered NOVA 3 processed as opposed NOVA 4 ultra-processed. It really sits on the boundary and many ready meal lasagnes are UPF, e.g. one of the others that I looked at in the video was defintiely UPF. This is one of the issues with UPF is that the boundaries are a bit fuzzy.
