The Real Reason Why Friendly's Are Disappearing

Like so many sit-down restaurant chains, Friendly’s has been struggling to stay open as of late. The restaurants are disappearing all over the country, and unless the company turns things around fast, they’ll continue to fade away. While casual dining on the whole is waning in popularity, there’s a whole lot more to it than that. The company is clearly struggling at the very top, as the two co-founders (who are also brothers) are very publicly fighting, and the food just isn’t getting good reviews from customers. Let’s take a look at the real reason why Friendly’s restaurants are disappearing.

When I was a kid, going to Friendly's was a special treat. I'd go there with my grandma, sister, cousins, sometimes my parents or sometimes even friends and I'd always look forward to the after-lunch ice cream sundae. As a teenager it stopped appealing to me, and I haven't been to one since. These days I'll go to a diner or a coffee shop if I want some simple, "American" mealtime fare.

Lets not exaggerate about McDonalds . Is not number 1 because is bad and cheap . Billions love it and millions just think is mediocre. Don't exaggerate because you're most likely doing it because you want to agree with your friends and family . Friendly’s downhill spiral was most definitely when The ice cream quality went downhill ! Friendly’s was a special place to go and buy ice cream whether it be a Hot fudge Sunday or an ice cream cone or that amazing Jim dandy Sunday .they were a sellout and started to sell their ice cream in large grocery stores that’s what I believe was the start of their decline .

I loved Friendly’s as a kid in the 1960s. The ice cream was high butter fat premium and the rare Big Beef cheeseburgers were like today’s prime burgers you pay a fortune for. That all changed when they were bought by the Hershey’s corporation. I gave it several tries hoping that the magic was still there. Poor service and less than average cuisine is what has brought them down.

Idk. I went to Friendly’s many times when I was in college in upstate NY. I just felt like the food was bland and boring. It wasn’t horrible, but I only ever went because a friend wanted to eat there (she loved their chicken strips for some reason?). Their biggest demographics were elderly people and people with small children, and that’s not a very stable base. Plus, if you don’t have at least a few menu items that I _cannot_ get anywhere else, then I’m just not interested. You gotta have something unique to draw me into *YOUR* restaurant specifically, and they don’t really have that (except for the ice cream, I guess).

We used to go there just to get dessert. Of course that was back in the 90's. I remember one time when my wife and I went there in the early 2000's. The service was so bad that we almost missed the movie we had tickets for. And believe me, we left plenty of time to get dinner before the movie. In fact, I think we tried to go to an earlier move but that was sold out so we got tickets for a much later one. That was the only time I didn't give my server a tip. Don't think we have been back to a Friendly's since. Not sure what happened there but if you don't hire good people, or you don't give them the tool to succeed then your customers will remember that for a long time.

I grew up where Friendly's started and if they want to make a comeback they need to go back to their roots. The food is no better than Denny's or Perkins now. Make the menu smaller and concentrate more on a higher quality of product done the way they did for the first 40 years when the Blake Brothers owned it. PLAIN AND SIMPLE!

Well, it just comes to show that all things have humble beginnings which can lead to an ending so sentimental. As time passes, society changes as so does its demands for something greater and newer. Although I cannot forsee the future, I do possess the common sense and wisdom that enables me and other individuals to accept that the world we know and/or knew will be no more when years become decades which will add to centuries that melt into a millennia. In other words, we MUST cherish and relish what is left now and keep it sacred, because our future descendants who will be born generations after us are not going to pay any mind to the things we've enjoyed and move on without us; I really don't blame them nor care how they'll go about it.

They should just convert to a ice cream shop/ bakery. Get rid of the restraunt locations or covert them all to smaller ice cream/ bakery shops. Then divert assets and cash flow to the factories and development to launch more ice cream products and baked goods and items like the ice cream cake.

They changed their menu too much & got really cheap with the ice cream & toppings. Who the heck wants shrimp or steak cooked on a hamburger grill at Friendly's? Stick to what made you great in the first place, great (normal sized) burgers & huge ice creams sundaes. I had to complain & ask for more ice cream & toppings the last few times I was there. I got a Reese's sundae that was half the size of the old happy endings. I got fed up & stopped going to my favorite place.

The $5.55 thing was a huge damage too... The ceo at the time legit never ate at a Friendlys until he got the position, and before that the last place he was ceo at crashed into the ground. You basically go to the counter, order, then sit down with a number and they brought it over. They removed 1/2 of the menu and the quality went downhill. Manchester and Windsor Locks were both converted to this new format, only for both to go back to the old style. Both went downhill and shut down in 2020. Former when Covid hit, and the latter later in the year.

I recall lots of visits to Friendly's after-school events for my sons, long ago. I also remember how the restaurant declined seriously in the eighties, My late husband asked for a glass of water and was told "They had no clean glasses," (!) Then, there was the time we were traveling and a server dumped a breakfast plate into my husband's lap. This sort of nonsense is the result of poor management, which is probably due to hiring poor managers. It is sad to see a great brand run into the ground.

This video neglects to mention Friendly's ice cream business. Their ice cream is very popular and is also sold in supermarkets in New England. The ice cream business will survive the restaurant business, whenever it meets it's demise. In the meantime, there are still two Friendly's restaurant locations in my town, including a recently rebuilt store, and they trundle on in 2019 mostly unchanged as they have for decades.

Loved going to Friendly's as a kid in the 1980s. Last few times I went to one, the service was painfully slow. The restaurant was NOT crowded (~25% full) and it took close to an 1 hour to get food after ordering. It wasn't even a one-time event, maybe 3 times in row it was like that.

I went to a friendlys Oct 2021 in Long Island NY. Been about 15 years since The last time I went before this. Sooo many memories! I worked here in highschool 1998-2002 in Wayne NJ, then in Bloomfield NJ, then 2002-2007 in Richmond VA! I miss it! I made great money on tips. They should have stuck with the classic style and food.. Friendlys is so nostalgic for so many of us! Ughh the Jim Dandy, The Monster Mash, The Cone head sundaes, The Fishamijig, The clam roll, they had the best honey mustard chicken salad! I have seen the ice cream at the grocery store though. If it ain't broke don't fix it!!

Then they started upping their price, and they're not high enough quality for that. Both founders of Friendly’s (the Blake brothers) eventually became centenarians. The younger, Curtis Livingston Blake, died in 2019 at age 102. The elder, Stewart Prestley Blake, is alive and well at 106! By the way, I hate that I live in a Friendly’s-free state. Do they still have Friendly’s down in Florida? Edit: I just found out S. Prestley Blake has passed away too. 😢

I have a good idea why they went under. It's a word we all know called greed. They kept adding more and more to their menu with less and less help. I use to work there so I know. It was an impossible menu for a few cooks. Short cuts were taken and the quality suffered. People had to wait longer and longer to get a shitty meal. The corporate assholes created their own decline

The last Friendly's in NH (and the last one the company built up to now) is in our capital, Concord. The store manager solved these issues by putting his focus on SERVICE, SPEED, and ATMOSPHERE! Unlike the Friendly's on the Salem/Haverhill border, or the one in Portland ME, Concord servers tables between 8 and 12 minutes. The food is very consistent, the servers are all incredibly friendly, and Friendly's fills the "family dining" niche in the capital uncontested. It's also kept very clean. TLDR: Our final New Hampshire Friendly's has an incredibly loyal following due to excellent management.

Back in the 60s, my family would go to a Freindly's in Worcester, Ma. The company had great steak sandwiches and what were calle Awful-Awfuls. That was an extra thick, extra sized frappe. The things were so thick one could stand a spoon up in it, and if one tried to sip it through a straw, the straw would collapse. Being a New England chain, the word is frappe NOT frappe-ay. All of these reasons are wrong. People got tired of waiting and hour for their food while inattentive wait staff are hanging in the back talking with the cooks. Actually Farm Shop had much better ice cream than Friendly's. Farm Shop I think went out of business. Friendly's food always sucked. The company got too greedy and focused more on profit than on customers. Any business that remains focused on customers will stay in business. They may have to adapt, but cannot lose their focus on customers.

Last time I was in a Friendly's there was no service or even water for 30 minutes. Walked out and not one person asked what was wrong. They used to be so good!!!!!!!!!!! Oh well!!!!!!!

I've only been to one friendlys. I was stationed in dover de. For my first base. It was sold to me as a ice cream place that has food. The burger was OK. Not great not terrible. The ice cream was pretty good though.

I used to love friendly's! i am from cape cod. but then i grew up, my organs failed and i realized, friendly's was nothing but industrial food.

I live in California and have no idea what this is. We have Denny’s and IHOP here, is this place like those 2? Sorry to hear this place may be closing, but it will have no effect on me or mine. Please accept my total lack of concern.

senorkaboom they are a east coast chain & yes they are kinda like IHOP & Denny’s but they were also know for there ice cream & Sundays & Milkshakes. I live right outside of DC, the one that was close to me closed more than 20 years ago.

There's one open 20 minutes away from my house I've been going there since I was little I love friendlys although the wait is absolutely insane the food more than makes up for It everytime I go there I get the chicken senders and fired with honey mustard since I was a toddler

They are all over New England and upstate New York, most of their locations were/are in Massachusetts.
