Apex Twin was innovative because he was not even using a UI. It had the feel of art because he was typing dos into a command line. It was hard. Took his hands using timing. Synthetic music has its place. But music is always limited by the instrument. No mater what.

Too short attention span to watch short video. Needing to watch it on 1.5x is exactly the problem.

Show a little respect for Rick. I am the same age as him and if someone started calling me "old man" I would tell them to f*&k off.

Dude, Richard James is my age. He's an 'Old Man'. And during the '90s/2000s he was the genius exception to the rule. You said it yourself, even with today's technology, we can't reproduce what he did then. Almost all of the modern stuff is generic and boring. They're all using the same sounds.

Dude, Rick is correct, you are out of line, I would rather work and record with a real drummer, I guess your approach is fine for hip hop production, but it never should have been the norm for everything else.

Yes, Aphex Twin album was genius. The problem is that too many producers use rote, from the box sounds and samples. Not everybody is Aphex Twin. As Rick points out, it's too fucking easy. I notice he was silent as a mouse on the same trap beats being used for 20 years....

Nah I hate the trap beat sound as well super yucky. It honestly pushed the game to a limit. But over the last 6 years trap is Wack

Unfortunately, Rick is right. I recently saw a video of Anthony Fantano criticizing this particular video. One of Anthony's points was kids are still exited about music ... look at how engaged they were about Kendrick Lamar & Drake. In fact, it wasn't the music they were engaged with as much as the situation itself. So, over time, starting with 90's pop music, what we started to get was an entertainment industry and not so much a music industry. In other words, as far as pop music, it became more corporate, thus snowballing us to what we have now. A quick example is in the 90's people like Prince, Michael jackson, Sade, George Michael, and Stevie Wonder were allowed to write, perform, and dress as the pleased as long as the music was selling. The only bad thing was that you might have been signed to a bad deal without knowing it, never the less we haven't gotten any artist as such sense except people who were performers previous to the 80's. As far as pop music in the 90's it became more pushed & curated. The Backstreet Boys, NSYNC, Brittany Spears, 98 Degrees, All For One, and so on were curated pop "artists" An example they were being called boy "bands". In the 80's you had actual bands who backed singers. Also of all those pop stars that I just mentioned take their hats off to 80's pop artist which it's hard to call them just pop artist when they were writing, playing instruments, and giving high level performances that still aren't matched for the most part. Bump the bad mediocre pop acts up from the 90's to the 2000's and beyond pop stars and it's pretty bad. The big issue is that not only is it is, too easy to make "music" what's being made doesn't really stand out like a sore thumb. As it turns out, yes, we had shady things going on at record labels, but at least your music was criticed by specialists who worked at the labels before it was released. Now you get to be your own music critic before you upload your "music". It's more freedom but it may be too much freedom that's creating the over saturated situation of mediocrity in the modern entertainment world of today???

Nobody understands music theory anymore , if I produced music electronically the first thing I'd study is what keys, and notes and chords fit together nicely, instead of " oh that sounds pretty good" Snoop dog once said "we used to set trends, now people just copy them. "

Rick is right. Any talentless hack can make music these days, but soon even they will be history. All commercial pop music will be made by AI and there will be no artists. This is where we've been heading for 30 years.

I disagree with everybody in this video! First music isn't easy at all, second, all musicians aren't cut from to same cloth. Musicians from a certain era or genre may see music, and how to create it much differently.

It's laughable that you think there's anything you could add to Ricks argument. Just looking at you in your little corner box thinking you're important enough that any of this matters. Dude was talking from experience about the music industry and pointing out the truth, and I can barely make it through you talking. 0/10, go do something else.
