Honestly after WCI I think it's perfectly clear that just as Zeff is Sanji's "real" father, Zoro is Sanji's "real" brother. There are lots of parallels there between Zeff/Judge and Zoro/Sanji's brothers. Just like with Zeff, on the outside it appears that Sanji gets along terribly with him but deep down they have the deepest of bonds. Enough for Sanji to make Zoro the most important request he could in the end of Wano.

If INDIVIDUALS feel attacked by the ideals of another it is because they question themselves or where they lie within the two ideals. Also, Yes Sanji is, at least currently until either receive more significant development there to remind Zoro that he is human, and he can't chase a strong Devil Fruit user too similarly in terms of power and skill. Lastly, almost all characters are skilled enough to thrive in some way or another outside of their position. Which is what makes their dedication to each of their crews/ groups more impactful in terms of staying or switching sides.

I found it interesting, that Sanji admitted that Zoro was right, when Zoro had his badass talk to the crew about Ruffy not being allowed to go and get Ussop before he apologizes. Sanji even shut Nami down by doing so, because she was talking. I liked that moment for both of these characters.

It is even more interesting that Sanji's response and agreement is very underappreciated which might even be the point of his action - while Zoro is Luffy's second in command as well as partner in combat, Sanji works in the shadows and often by himself, so naturally he often is underappreciated. The fact that Sanji's input in that situation is more on subtle side and on surface overshadowed by Zoro's (kind of like entire Kuma's pain scene) speaks even more about the chef's nature in crew, being in background behind the foreground that is Luffy and Zoro. There is also the bounty situation. ... Man, Oda is such an incredible writer.

Shabondy was a good interaction too. When they're fighting the first Pacifista, Sanji notices Zoro's wounds from Thriller Bark haven't healed yet, so when they're running away from Sentoumaru, Kizaru and the other Pacifista, Sanji actually asks Franky to look after Nami (who he was originally guarding), and goes to help Zoro specifically because he knows he's too hurt to defend himself. They're brief, often silent and far-off between, but those moments of respect and care are always good to see. But yes, like you said the Zoro/Sanji thing is interesting because while they do respect each other, and (deep down) care for each other, they're not really "friends" like the rest of the crew.

Zorro and Sanji's whole in-character debate comes back to their treatment of women. I'm not even joking, the first time they EVER fight is when Nami pretends to betray the Strawhats. Zorro treats her as a credible threat, and Sanji is too busy thinking with his groin to do anything but roll over for her. That was the start of their bad blood. This comes back to Zorro's backstory, where his whole MOTIVATION for becoming so strong in the first place is because of his childhood friend, who was constantly treated as less credible because she was simply born a girl. Because of this, Zorro treats women like equals, including equal threats and equal warriors. He will never disregard a threat because they were born a girl, the way his childhood friend was disregarded. Sanji, meanwhile, had it beaten into his head as a child (by Zeff) to never hit a woman, etc, etc. When you add in his complete "white knight" attitude towards any attractive woman who crosses his path, it just makes the differences between the two that much more stark.

I think it's just an interesting topic. I definitely agree people get really weird and obsessive over it, but aside from that it's a lot of fun actually arguing about them strength wise with someone who's actually constructive cause there are arguments on both sides. It comes from a passion about the show and characters, I think. It's less the comic relief dynamic, more that both characters have a clear rivalry and large fanbase, and so there are lots of discussions about the perceived strength of both characters cause in both cases we are yet to really see either be pushed in the post-timeskip era.

Sanji is more like the European knights we know - chivalrous, gallant, benevolent, a gentleman towards the ladies, very loyal. Both are great characters. When Oda-sensei gave them countries they'd come from Zoro was obviously a samurai from Japan and Sanji was a musketeer from France.

My own type of personality tends to be more like Zoro's and I find great inspiration in his sense of honor and unbreakeable determination. On the other hand my own personal values align pretty well with Sanji's, specially with regards to women (I also practiced taekwondo for years and so it was only natural that I'd love his fighting style). With that being said, in all my 10 years of reading and watching One Piece I never understood those childish discussions and meaningless debates over these two characters and by the end of this journey it will probably stay like that. Edit: With regards to manliness, that's also a reason why I love the two. Zoro is more of the Chad-like, high testosterone, badass type of dude who doesn't take women seriously in a physical sense and it's not really interested in them or find them annoying (while also getting mad when someone harms one: like Enel with Robin), while Sanji is the more traditional, gentleman-like type of manliness, the one who loves women (or the archetype of the feminine) and is willing to forgive even their lies (thinking about Robin and Viola). Both also resonate deeply with me.

My personal take on it is that people tend project their view how sanji should be than what he is. everyone want their favorite character to be stronger but thats not have it follows in the story. As a person that prefers Sanji over Zoro. Personally it was never about strength. It’s clear that Zoro is stronger than Sanji as he is the “number 2”. Sanji and Zoro don't know how to show they care. Zoro never learned. He only had one friend his entire life and she died. Until Luffy shows up, Zoro had no friends. All Sanji learned from Zeff is to shout and bicker at the ones you love and so he does that with Zoro. The only thing TOXIC about them is their fanbase. I think the biggest thing that people tend to forget is that, even if its not stated out right, slowly over the story Zoro and Sanji have come to recognise each other as equals. They recognise each other as equals not because of their power, but their own individual devotions to their crew as they both cover one another by making up for the others weakness and bolstering their strengths.

Pre timeskip, they had some back and forth where their strength in relation to each other was in question. They both didn’t seem to have any trouble in along park, though zoro was injured and Sanji was facing the guy with a higher bounty, in alabasta, they both won, but Sanji seemed more definitively above mr. 2, than zoro seemed definitively above mr. 1. In enies lobby, zoros opponent had a lightly higher dourki but was new to his zoan power, while Sanjis opponent had much more experience and mastery of a carnivorous zoan, but they both needed new moves to win and both were still ok enough to keep fighting. To be honest I never realized that the rivalry was as toxic as you make it out to be. Personally, I like both of them. That being said, I do think that Zoro is portrayed as stronger.

In my own way, I see their rivalry as a way to keep each other in check and focused because they need to be at their best especially when Luffy is about to start things. It keeps them working hard for Luffy and the crew as a whole, as I see them as the right and left hand of the crew.

Maybe Ive just been lucky, but I've never encountered this in at least three years of being part of this community. Sure, I've seen some goodnatured ribbing, but never to the extreme that I hear (especially) KZbinrs talking about. My favorite character is Luffy, so I don't really have a horse in this race, but I like both Zoro and Sanji about equally. I definitely feel one is stronger than the other, but that doesn't change how much I like them.

I don’t see Zoro and Sanji dislike each other. From time to time the show demonstrates they care each other deeply and their bond is so unique and inexplicable. Their dynamic is divine! Why Zoro fans and Sanji fans are toxic to each other is beyond me! I love both of them. I just know one thing: missing any one of these characters in One Piece is disastrous to the series. Not only Zoro and Sanji, this extends to any strawhats.

Agreed, each of the Straw hats adds to the story in a way that it is incomplete without all of them. Those two do argue, but I see it as a sign that they are two different characters with different personalities rather than anything else.

I would state that their case is different only because Zeff seems to view Sanji as his son and Sanji see's Zeff as his actual father. Still, it is clear that they have respect for each other and care about what might happen to them. I have seen multiple instances in fiction, mostly in books where characters have a similar dynamic. Gather enough personalities together in one place and you are likely to find at least one pair who can tend to clash and the Strawhat's certainly have a diverse set of personalities. Probably due to being a diverse set of characters with different life experiences and goals.

It would be an extension or understandable for them to interact in similar way and different with other strawhats. This is the way he learnt and adopted for decade.

@@luffysanji9840 I suppose that makes sense. Each person has their own way of interacting with others and that depends on a variety of factors. Too long a list to put here. Just out of curiosity, am I the only one who is curious about Zeff's past before meeting Sanji? We know that he was a famous pirate with a reputation who apparently fought using his legs in a similar manner to Sanji. We know that he has a logbook of the Grand Line implying that he has a great deal of experience there, and we know that he was seeking the All Blue that Sanji now seeks. Outside of that, I don't think we ever learned much about him and how he became the person he is now. Just some food for thought.

I'm honestly of the opinion that, post-Wano, with Sanji carrying Zoro and Zoro promising to take care of Sanji should his genes overwhelm him, that Zoro and Sanji will probably become much better "friends". Zoro being indebted to Sanji for carrying him -- and for handling Queen so Zoro could handle King -- and Zoro knowing the truth about Sanji's body, being there as a rock he can depend on if he loses control. Its a dynamic I hope we get to see, especially because we saw some of the best teamwork between the two since the Davy Back Fight during Wano.
