I've never seen a chicken with blue-gray skin. I'm curious how the meat will taste. Thanks for showing the processed birds side-by-side, Stace. Full-watch. 👍🏽🤠 8/10/22

It tasted like chicken! It just looked a little different but the meat looked like any other chicken.

How was the taste for the bantams compared to the hen? I understand there is less meat
@ChickenHues2 ай бұрын
They just taste like chicken. They were young so there wasn’t any different taste.

I raised a couple Rangers one year and I didn’t like how they just sat by the feeder. Even though the dual purpose cockerels are skinny I think they have more fun while they are alive than the meat chickens do. They usually annoy me and get sent to freezer camp by 14 weeks though! 😂 Thanks for the side-by-side comparison, I hadn’t seen a silkie roaster before.

Yes- it’s rare that ours make it much last that because of the crowing and harassment of the hens. Lol I think mine are so scrawny because they’re having so much fun running around all day! I do think they’d be beefier if I penned them with plenty of food… but I like to see them enjoying life.

This is great thank you. I do the same, hatch our own and butcher. 4 years now. However, I can never get the meat to taste good. Very dry.

Going for the quiet life, I see! Roosters are fun but the hens are much friendlier and calm without one.

Can you share your recipe for cooking older hens so they're tender? We're doing our first processing day this fall!
@ChickenHues2 жыл бұрын
I use my instant and cook them with some water and seasoning for about an hour. Let them rest in the refrigerator for a couple of days first. The legs will still be pretty chewy/tough, but the breast is wonderful. I also like to use older hens when I can chicken. That makes it very tender.

The Rooster depends for me. Most Roosters are a pain. I just want good ones for breeding. However, every once and a great while you get a quiet and friendly Rooster. They are worth keeping, seeing that they are so rare and unique.
@ChickenHues2 жыл бұрын
I agree! Those are a joy to have around, in my opinion.

I have a good one right now and I'm SO pleased with him. He's a purebred but I doubt his offspring would win any prizes in the poultry shows. I don't care, he's worth keeping for his personality.

How are you putting weight on your silkies. Mine are skin and bones always. Copper Marans do make great chicken soup for sure.
@ChickenHues Жыл бұрын
Not sure. They’re pretty solid for being small chickens. We keep feathers away from their eyes so they can see and they’re in a separate coop. Both of those may help.

So, I'm a bantam cochin dude. I have a bunch of cockerels. It's just me and my partner at home and if we don't get rid of them, then I know I must do what I just do...but do you think a bantam is good for just a dinner for two? 😂❤
@ChickenHues Жыл бұрын
It was just a bit bigger than a quail. I’d think most people would eat an entire one for a dinner. There wouldn’t be much meat on one.

Hi, hope you're ok. Been a while since you've made an update. Hope you, your family and all your birds are well. I ended up with an accidental rooster.

I am! Thank you for checking in! Life has been busy and time has gotten away from me. Are you able to keep a rooster?
@ScaryFear2 жыл бұрын
@@ChickenHues I'm glad you're ok. Yeah, I totally hear you on being busy. Same here with the coop and the dog. There are no deed restrictions in my area, but the backyard neighbors are a different neighborhood. I don't want to make anyone angry just in case. I have been bringing him inside at night. I've gotten attached to him. He's a friendly rooster to me anyway. He's a bit rough with the girls. Luckily he mostly only crows in the morning. I'll make a video about him soon.

That’s good to know. Bantams are so fun and it’s good to know extras can also be useful as good. We had a pair of OEGBs once - Rocky and Adrian - and they were so fun!

It tasted good when I tried it! I originally thought I’d use it for dog food, but see no reason that we wouldn’t also use the meat.
