I worked for Land Rover for many years. I was a part of TReK, Eco Challenge, The Lodge, G4 and quite a few other events. Unveiled vehicles, worked the major car shows, and on and on. I have a wonderful story about a Camel Trophy vehicle on loan from LRNA to a Centre (dealership) that was damaged by a careless employee who should have never been driving the vehicle. Understand to get the honor of having a Camel at your Centre was a HUGE DEAL. There was very specific paperwork that had to be signed and no one, I MEAN NO ONE was allowed to drive the thing and that was made clear before it even got to the lot. So, at this Centre the parking lot had these lights mounted on aluminum poles. The poles were mounted on top a concrete base about waist high. One of the lamp poles in the middle of the parking lot had been damaged and removed some time before the incident, but the concrete base was still there. Being waist high it was invisible when backing a Discovery up. You know where this is going. So, this lowly salesperson took it upon himself to show off and move the Camel. He backs it into the concrete base and just screws the whole side and rear bumper up. Legendary Land Rover PR front man Bill Baker (RIP) was there, and he was just giving this sales guy the business just reaming him a new one for messing up the Camel. If you knew Bill, he was a pretty reserved guy most of the time. Not this night. Neck veins, red face, just seething with anger chewing this poor kid out. Kid leaves with his head hung low. Everyone standing around was kinda quiet after having witnessed the butt chewing. Bill takes the keys to move the Camel back inside and he backs the Camel right into the same damn concrete pole!

My boss has every model of every LR/RR used as Camel Trophy team vehicle from our country in real life, some support and all unrestored but in working order. And that means he got them from '81 till '98 Freelander. And yes,he has the '87 RRC 2.4TD original Camel Trophy team car. These Land Rovers took a hell of a beating. If you haven't seen one un restored in real life, you've missed out. I've worked on and driven most of them and i can fully say they are very special cars indeed with the greatest heritage imaginable.

Land Rovers are great I have had 4, the last one I tried to cross a canal in, no not by choice, I had a seizure and ran off the road (yes just what a 4x4 is for) but ended up flying across a canal, hitting a tree on the other side and started to sink, a policeman happened to be closeby, dived in, pulled me out and saved my life, the land rover got lifted out and was done for. Not allowed to drive due to medical stuff, so had to say goodbye to 6 vehicles, a disco mk2 auto and five Dodge 50 vans, trucks, and a bus as well as a Jester kit car.

During the late 1990s 4 of us in a medieval reenactment club got a invite to go to Sweden. So somehow we got a ex camel trophy car that was used by a Japanese team (there signatures where inside) oh sorry did I forget to mention that we where towing a 3in calibre replica cannon (yes you can own big guns in the UK, you must have a good reason to) the trip went wrong when the orangutan in charge of the ferry got the time of departure wrong, so we had to wait hours for a ferry not to hamberg but hook of Holland. The connection was sailing from northern Germany and we where going to be late so a frantic road trip across Holland and Germany towing a big gun got us a tiny bit nervous....... At last we made it to the ferry at rostock? And where on the way to malmo. This was surreal as the ship was the Robin Hood!! Odd name for a German boat. We arrived in Sweden to be met with police waving machine guns and giving us an evil look over but we had a letter from there government dep so everyone started to relax.... Que a right good party and an invite back next year. I do wonder what happened to that sandy yellow land rover..... Great days.... 👍

I've been the MD of one of the UK's most successful JLR Retailer Groups (Farnell) and I remember buying a G4 Discovery from JLR that was fully specified but also very "used" because it had been used for the initial selection trials. In all honesty , I only bought it because it was sold to me for less than half the value of a regular model - the risk was hedged. At that time, it was also the first for sale in the UK and it sold in 2 hours..... to a customer from Sweden who assumed "HSE" spec included heated seats. Bizarrely, it was a middle east spec and was missing that essential feature when residing in Sweden! We all learnt a lesson and I'll never forget the embarrassment. Nevertheless, we then went onto buy almost 70 over the next twelve months and cornered the market until other retailers cottoned on and prices tripled. Interesting fact - more than half were unmarked and virtually delivery miles.... although some had no accessories and my idea to buy four Sports in the orange and then respray them metallic white (the days before vinyl wraps) didn't work out as planned....
