@@QuartzIsAnOxide i actually do not like the portrays of gods in percy jackson when refering to the roman part. Like, Helios being forgetten was not true, and not all the roman counterpart were more "disciplined" (the fandom puts in this way), especially Neptune and Volcanos. Also, i trought Dionisius portrayl in the first books was already influenced by Bacchus? In archaic and classical Greece Dionisius he even had a beard and he was skinny (while in lighting thief is the totally opposite), while later he was portrayed as more jovial, beardless and not that skinny during the roman period and in rennascence (and this period was influenced by roman mythology, not greek).

Ovid is pious to the gods in his other works. Metamorphoses covers love stories (with exception of a few ones). Love between equals will always lead to a good result, love between a superior and a inferior will lead to disasters. This is why love between gods and humans leads to tragedies, where the human or nymph by the end is desuhamize literaly, to become a plant or animal or monster. But there is also stories between humans who also leads to tragedies like Narcissus or Tereus. So saying that the book is anti autoritharian is a very simple review of a book about love tales.
@sonofcronos7831
@sonofcronos7831 Жыл бұрын
@@msicvbes4977 the book is not about politics, is about love. Love between equals=good, love between a superior (someone that tries to control or possess his partner) and a "inferior" (the one possessed by his partner)=a inhuman metamorphosis. This is why he uses gods more often since is clear that gods are intented to be this superior force that controls you. But he also uses human people as well like Narcissus and Tereus to show that humans also leads to inhuman metamorphosis.

As a fan of mythology itself, it is refreshing to see someone manage to cover every single aspect of tales, not just from one source. And it really shows how people will evolve certain stories to try and fit it into a narrative to be more accecptable to the times, rather than keep it to what the orginal lessons were attempting to teach. Whether Medusa was orginally a monster from birth or turned into one, I think it's fasinating that her symbol managed to come full circle as a face that represents protection and wards off evil. Alibiet for different reasons for a certain group, but it's one of the few stories from mythology that managed to keep it's orgins in some way. Out of curoisity, I know you did some videos about Persephone and Hades and the story about them, but would it be possible if you could cover the REAL story of Hades and Persehone and explain why many people might interput what was once considered an empowering yet tragic tale of a mother and daughters lost rapture, to that of a forbidden romance of the god of the underworld with innocent flower girl? I would love to see your take on that topic!

@Ian McNicol I'm a Classics student, and one of my teachers (literally the world's leading expert on Underworldly gods in ancient Greece, Dr. Ellie Mackin Roberts) said that OSP's video is probably the most discouraging video she's seen on Hades and Persephone by virtue of: "not one thing about it being correct" 💀
@dmr2200
@dmr2200 Жыл бұрын
@Ian McNicol From what Dr. Roberts said the "Bronze Age/ Mycenaean Persephone" discussed in their video doesn't exist and was likely Perses-later the father of Hekate. Early scholars first made the connection between Persephone and the Mycenaean record based on loose etymological similarities, such as the words seemingly looking alike when transliterated. I'm not sure about the details, as the Bronze Age isn't my area of expertise, but Dr. Roberts emphasized that the methodology used to make the connection was flawed and long outmoded. That's another thing, too: we know more about Despoina than they let on, and many of the connections they made weren't right. Despoina was an Arkadian goddess who was worshipped alongside Kore-Persephone, making them separate goddesses.
@dmr2200

@Ian McNicol My biggest issue with them as a Classics student is that they don't reference their sources. I know for a fact that they use Wikipedia (which isn't nearly enough when you're making historical videos), and it doesn't take very long to put some links in a description, but they don't do that. This creator's video is fantastic, but I also wish he would put together a "works cited" in the description lol

Personally, my favorite version of Medusa is from the Fate series. It manages to blend the older interpretations with the newer ones very well. While the most famous version of Fate's Medusa is a beautiful woman, there is also her future self, the Gorgon who looks more monstrous. In her series debut, she is a protector of a young girl who helped carry out her wish, but that didn't mean she was passive considering she fought for her and, in some timelines, even dies for her . The sequel to that original series also gave her more backstory showing that she started a beautiful woman that turned monstrous to protect her sisters, only to devour them. Her death at Perseus' hand is seen as both an epic battle and a mercy kil considering she was nothing more than a writhing mass of snakes when Perseus got to her. In the series where her future self debuted, she was mistaken for the mesopotamian earth goddess Tiamat, showing that they didn't forget her origins as a goddess. To recap the blending of old and new interpretaions, we have: -Protector -Protector of women -Willing to use violence -Beautiful woman -Terrifying monster -A mere human -Seen as a goddess When seeing all that, it makes sense why she is my favorite interpretation since she isn’t shown as merely a tragic figure, or a terrifying monster, and is instead blended beautifully into a new character who takes everything into account from being a protector of women seen in the modern day and being seen as a monstrous goddess all the way back from her earliest iterations

Actually he says that she was transformed "to remember the crime". Is just like Zeus creating constelations for some evil folk like Orion, to preserve the memory of the crime. It is odd for us today, but in anciet times, people liked to use constelations or statues (like the gorgonion statues) to remember people that the world could be a awful place and that we need to ward of evil. Also, Ovid himself was very pious towards the gods in his other works, is more in metamorphoses were he invents the awful versions, but because he was "anti-autoritarian" is very unlikely, altrough it still could be.

@sonofcronos7831 Жыл бұрын
@@videogollumer Ovid metamorphoses was written before his exile, while Fasti he never finished because he died in exile. But in fasti and other works he do not bash the gods. Metamorphoses is a book of poetry, it portrays love between human characters in a good way, ending with a happy ending, or ending with a tragedy, normally by external things to the couple. But it potrays love by gods as terrible, r4pe or just awful in general. He even finished his work saying that not even Jupiter could destroy it (and he was right). So he see myths just as a way to tell stories, he clearly did not believe in them, but he believed in the gods, at least he had nothing against them. He invented the stories and tries to portray the gods as horrible as he can in order to elevate human love, not out of spite against autoritarianism. A guy that really liked to bash gods was the writer Lucian, not Ovid.

I saw an online photo of a contemporary sculpture of Medusa holding Perseus's severed head. That artpiece was obviously of the 'medusa = righteous feminist rage" mindset, but it really didn't sit well with me how Perseus was being demonized in this line of thought, Perseus who is the one Greek hero I know of who had the least hubristic tendencies. It was all a very much 'trying to empower one group at the expense of another' kind of approach to a very ancient story from ancient times

Same. I don’t mind the statue but I’m of the belief that we need a new retailing of the Medusa story where people don’t demonize Persuse. Because man was a kid trying to save his mom from a creep, he’s not the villain if anything he’s a victim who was sent on a suicide mission. So what I’m saying is I think people severely miss the point when they demonize him to and not the actual creep in this story.

Well researched and fun as always, Jake. Thank you! I wonder if using a gorgon’s face to ward off evil is similar to how modern Greeks use the evil eye to ward off bad vibes. It’s less “this thing will protect me from evil” and more “I keep the symbol of something evil/malintentioned close to me to discourage any other evil/malintentioned energy or event from harming me”. Couple of modern language quirks - ‘gorgon’ in modern Greek is also used to mean mermaid, and one of the words for jellyfish is ‘medusa’.

So as a sex worker (Dominatrix, Onlyfans, etc) this was really, REALLY interesting because Medusa has gone on to become both a feminist icon, but an icon for sex workers who’ve been assaulted, but can’t or are too afraid to report their attacker because the form of sex work they may have been engaging in to survive may not have been legal (ex. Onlyfans, P0rn & Stripping being legal compared to FSS which is illegal), so there’s always the very real risk of the assaulted sex worker going to jail instead of their attacker, hence the reference to modern day Medusa being assaulted and her attacker not seeing justice. So hearing the differences in the original story is amazing and this video was so needed.

While I agree that sex workers deserve to be able to do their jobs safely,this interpretation really rubs me the wrong way. It paints Thesus as a monster for killing her and I really don’t think that’s a fair interpretation. With the exception of making Thesus look like the bad guy,I think it’s a good interpretation although it does ignore the fact Medusa turns anyone she looks at into stone (from what I’ve heard,her sheer ugliness turns you to stone,it’s not like a magical gaze) so it’s a bit more than a defence mechanism

I always thought that Chrysaor's nature is something of a lost facet of the mythology and that all we really know is that his name means "He has a golden sword". I think I've seen the boar depictions but I'm curious as to whether you suppose there might have been another version of him where he had hands and wielded a sword.

I find Medusas story, and it’s many different versions very intriguing and interesting. I personally think that Natalie Haynes did a wonderful job at combining some of the many versions with each other, in a way that ads up, in her book “stone blind”. I highly recommend it to any one who’s open for different takes on beloved myth’s. ^^

As a greek I'm very conflicted on the subject. On one hand, the fact that the myths of my ancestors are not only still remember but inspire people across the world brings a lot of joy. On the other hand, the fact that the most prominent version of the myth (Medusa's myth) now a days is the one who was created by an Italian as a way to throw shit to his former boss and has not only portrait our old gods as jerks but it has starting to give rise to a villfication of one of our most prominent folklore heroes is somewhat disheartening

In Sardinia there are different legends about Medusa and in those cases she is just a beautiful queen who protects her relam after her father (Phorcus) death against Atlante, and then she was killed in a battle. Medusa (or better Mèdousa) means protector in Greek

I like how Ray Harryhausen brings back the monstrous Medusa somewhat with the body-covering scales and the serpentine lower body in Clash Of The Titans (1981). In that movie, Perseus rides Pegasus _before_ killing Medusa, which is interesting to contrast with the mythic origin of that winged horse. Another small corner of popular culture - Dungeons & Dragons - has also complicated matters by using the name 'gorgon' for a metallic bull-like monster that medieval bestiaries called the Libyan Bull. Having done that, they then called an entire race of snake-braided women 'Medusae'. So confusing.

I don't remember which translation or which retelling it was, but I encountered an interesting one where it was implied she turned everything around her to stone when her eyes were open, no matter if she could see it or not; When she fled into the countryside, she turned a whole town into marble statues by simply walking too close. IIRC, this version also stated that she was born a gorgon, but only turned people into stone after being cursed...

This story is not from greece or rome. All three gorgons have this power in all versions, the idea that only Medusa has it because of a course is a modern misunderstaning, not even Ovid says that because he has Stheno and Euryale in the story. However, Medusa could indeed transform even nature in stone, it was said in ancient times that weird rocky formations where the creation of the gorgons. In some stories like Ovid she can transform sand in stone, and there was a joke that Seriphos (the island where Perseus grew) was rocky because of the Medusa (her power affect even the island itself).

The strange thing is that D&D calls the snake-haired monsters in the game "Medusae" while they use "Gorgons" refer to predatory stone bulls who petrify creatures with their breath, smash them, then eat them.
@doncalicula7938
@doncalicula7938 Жыл бұрын
I think D&D did this because Gorgons in classic greek mythology are considert two different typ of monster. The Three gorgon-sisters and then an gorgon-monster that exist with no relationship to them.

@@doncalicula7938 I looked it up, D&D seems to have based it on a variant of the Catoblepas that has petrification breath, which has been referred to as an "African Gorgan", while the monster D&D calls "Catoblepas" is based on the variant that has a death stare.
