@LordZaayl7 ай бұрын
That fact alone was probably what got New Jack acquitted. There is a level of negligence on the fathers part for allowing his son to wrestle in the first place. But at the same time this was 1996 and most people knew wrestling was "fake" (scripted) but how real the work is was not well known, it was a common assumption that wrestling was completely safe and wrestlers never got hurt in the ring and its not like you could just google it and find out online super easily like you can today, the internet was in its infancy and the business was still being protected. Though I don't know if he was aware his son had to lie about his age and credentials to get in the ring, if he did then there was really no excuse at all and he would be at the very least equally to blame.

As someone in the southeastern U.S wrestling scene it amazed me just how often New Jack got booked when he was clearly mentally unstable. I only knew him post skull fracture, but many people claimed he came out of that injury as a completely different person. New Jack was legitimately the scariest wrestler I've ever met out of character. He legitimately made me question at times if he forgot that what he does was supposed to be a work. New Jack had some very interesting accounts of this in some interviews during his final years where he wasn't trying to be over the top. When it got to court, he got Paul Heyman and ECW off the hook almost immediately. When Erich Kulas' lawyer was trying to establish how long New Jack had worked for ECW, Jack said that he didn't work for them. Even after the lawyer pulled out various magazines with pictures of New Jack in ECW, Jack responded with "I'm sub-contracted. I don't work for ECW". New Jack was facing up to 11 years for assault and battery with a deadly weapon when the case went to trial in late 1998 and concluded in early 1999, and he claimed that the District Attorney in Massachusetts had been offering him a plea deal right up until the day of the verdict. If New Jack would plead guilty the offer was a five year prison sentence, and he would serve one before being eligible for parole. The civil lawsuit went pretty much the same way as the criminal trial, with New Jack getting acquitted on all counts. As wrestlers had testified that Kulas had asked New Jack to help him "get colour", and Kulas' father had been complicit in lying to get his son booked by ECW, despite knowing that he was underage and had no training.

I’m in an indie promotion in England. We have trainees ranging from 12 years old up to 28 years old. There’s a couple new wrestlers on the shows who are 15, but our policy is that nobody under 16 years old can be hit with weapons and they are excluded from any type of death match. At 17 they can be put in death matches, BUT they can’t watch or perform on the 18+ shows that we might put on, which contain far more bloody death matches.
@NonSenseMcGee7 ай бұрын
I mean, why? Death matches being used so often just dilutes an already diluted match type and only serves to potentially injure young wrestlers - what purpose could any feud involving a 17 year old serve by going that far? What story does it tell? Does it really increase viewership or tickets sold to have death matches all the time?
@Halfdanr_H7 ай бұрын
@@NonSenseMcGee We don’t have death matches “all the time”, but when we do there’s rules regarding age. I wouldn’t say it’s a common occurrence to have a 16-17 year old in a death match, but occasionally yes, they happen. As for why, I’m not the booker, so I can’t say for sure, but it does sell tickets when we put them on.
