I remember an interview with one of the surviving Night Witches. She said that if you dug your finger in the plane, the cloth would rip. It was that flimsy. She was proud of the title Night Witch. She also spoke fondly of a girl who survived seven flights out. Queens. Every single one of them.

You did great! How did you like the headphones? They make a big difference. 👍 A few answers to your questions... ▪︎ The reason the attacks were unexpected is because bombers didn't typically fly at night. But because their planes were so flimsy, the weight of the two bombs they carried made them fly closer to the ground. So flying at night helped keep them from being seen. These brave ladies flew in 3 plane formations. They would turn off their engines as they got close to their target. The first plane would release a flare to light up the target and then prepare to draw fire with the second plane. The third plane would swoop in, drop their bombs, and then all three would turn their engines back on and return to base. Their mission was really to harass the German soldiers, to keep them from sleeping at night and to make them nervous. Well, these ladies did their job well!! ▪︎ That was a good observation you made that even though her plane was on fire, she still dropped her bombs and completed her mission. Such bravery! ▪︎ I think it's great that you have become such a fan of Sabaton! I also think it's unlikely that you will win that drawing. However, I might have something I can send to you. Link your email address or something so I can arrange it outside of the KZbin comment section. LOL ▪︎ I agree that it was unfair to exclude the women from the victory parade. Interestingly though, Russia was the first country to allow women to participate in combat. So, they didn't get it all right... hell, they got most of it wrong, to be honest, but at least they let these talented, fierce, brave women taken on the invading German army. Now, I have another Sabaton recommendation for you. But this time, the video is a bit of the band behind the scenes being goofy, and partly it is footage from a live concert. This video you won't have to think about as much, but rather it is just a fun video with great music! Great War - Official Music Video (Sabaton) - kzbin.info/www/bejne/fpzFeGZvYrlnfpI

Hey bro. Here is some information not mentioned in the video or comments: 1. The reason why the regiment's commandant went out and found the crash sites of crashed planes, was to confirm that her girls had indeed crashed and died. This was not just to document the regiment's story, but it was to confirm -- and prove for certain -- that any earned medals were awarded, post-humuously. She wanted every one of her girls to be recognized for their service against the German Army -- and those awards would not be given if there was any doubt as to whether or not the pilot or navigator had defected, which in Russia, was considered treason. 2. This story is truly now a story in history, as the last Night Witch of the 588th Bombing Regiment died in 2017. May no one ever doubt the bravery and courage under fire these women had to defend the Russian homeland. 3. During World War II, Russia had a 97% casualty rate. What this means is that for every 100 soldiers that went to fight, 97 of those soldiers were either killed or wounded.

The video mentions it, but the Night Witches gained notoriety during the Nazi's attempted invasion of Russia (aka: the Soviet Union/USSR), where they carried out these night bombing missions. While I'm sure the 588th regiment wanted the Nazis dead, their main goal was to ensure that the Nazis couldn't rest. The Night Witches were undetected because their planes were too small and flimsy to be picked up radars at the time, so the Nazis didn't know if or when they'd be bombed. The only warning they got was the sound of wind rushing againdt the planes, which made a wooden whooshing sound -- a sound that was likened to a witch's broom. The 588th regiment was such a nuisance to the Nazi forces that any soldier who could shoot one of their planes down would be awarded with an Iron Cross, one of the highest honors Nazi Germany offered.

Another sidenote: they carried NO parachutes, and most of their KIAs were just burned alive in their burning planes. Mrs, Rashkevich's order "DO WEAR THE PARACHUTES ON MISSIONS" was mostly ignored: the fate of parachuted pilots on enemy's ground wasn't very pleasing. And you may imagine the fate of the parachuted lady-pilot... It could be much worse then the fate of male pilot. That was the "Russian feminism" in its purity: "woman can and should defend her motherland!"

The german soldiers grew to hate what they called the sewing machines because they couldn't rest even in rear areas.

They turned the engines off before approaching a German outpost. To turn them on again, they had to crawl out of their cockpits to turn the propeller since these airplanes had no possibilities to do that out of the cockpit. Just in case it isn't told in the vid.

How so? All they would have to do is use their forward momentum and airspeed to turn the props, exactly as you would by hand. The only thing you would have to is turn on the electrical and fuel systems, maybe choke the engine to get the proper air/fuel ratio. Other than that, there really wouldn't be any issue turning the engine over after dropping their bombs.

smh xD well in WWII the main enemy were Germany ... Russia was part of the Allied forces so there and Russians lost alot of manpower so they developed a all female squadron of fighters to bomb german bases and such and they got the nickname Night Witches :P for the tactics of the bombing

You're wrong. Many girls WOULD be in active regiments, and there were 3 regiments: night bombers, day bombers and fighters.
