The Realistic Future of Video Production (for me)

I'm having some second thoughts about my gear and my processes.
Fun facts, this video was filmed on the iPhone 14 Pro using Final Cut Camera and monitored using FCP for iPad. It was edited ENTIRELY on the iPad, to my surprise. More on that one day.
Music was from the included tracks in the Final Cut Pro app. I don't know to whom credit goes.

Not really my experience. iPhones do a lot of smart things to the image. I don’t even know exactly what they do, but they make everything in all lighting conditions look pretty. It’s a particular type of pretty, and there are other pretties - and I’m actually getting tired of the lifted shadows - but iPhones are uncannily good at making things look pretty.

I've never fully surrendered to Auto settings on my Sony's. I may give that a shot. There's also something impressive about how quickly the phones can focus from 2" to infinity. My Sony can't seem to do that without breathing a ton. But I'll try it out. Maybe that's my next video!

Topical. Interesting. You didn’t mention ND filters. That’s what bothers me about phones. When you start fooling around with filters in case accessories, etc., aren’t you back to gear hampering the story? I mainly shoot 24p at 1/48 second (180-degree shutter). Maybe that marks me as an amateur, which I strictly am. I love that look with motion. But to get it outdoors, you often need an ND filter. Especially with phones, since they lack a diaphragm control. I think the first iPhone to have a built-in ND filter will blow up. I wonder why it’s taking so long to arrive.

ND drives me crazy on my Sony, too. I wish they could use the electronic variable ND from the FX6 in the smaller bodies. That would change the game completely. Lately, I've been using no ND on the phone, but just embracing the higher frame rate outside since most of what I've been filming is more action sequence (sports) and not scenery, so the higher shutter speed fits the feel more than it would if I were going for beauty shots. More to test!

@@ShaunHautly Oh, ND filters are a real nuisance on mirrorless cameras. I guess Sony is protecting its FX6 (and up) cameras from cannibalisation by cheaper models, but what is Apple protecting by omitting this tech from the top-end iPhone? Maybe Sony owns the tech? Even if so, Apple is made of money and should licence it, in my opinion. But I realise I’m just one customer. I don’t actually know the market value of built-in ND filters. I just know I personally want that in my phone. I think slow motion - which is obviously very useful commercially and artistically - is a strength of the iPhone. Because late-model iPhones have very fast sensors (by Sony Semiconductor, I think), because slow-motion masks the movement of handheld cameras, and because ND filters are less important for slow motion. Looking forward to hearing about your tests!
