I absolutely relate to the last point you made. I'm Canadian and have been living here for 9.5 years, only back to Canada three times. It was only the last time I went back (last year) that I felt that New Zealand was my home now and Canada wasn't home anymore. It was a weird feeling to be a "visitor" in the country I spent most of my life in. Also, 100% I've found it hard to make close friends here. I'm older and without kids, so I feel like it's hard to find people in the same stage of life that have the time to put into making a new friend. I find it easier to make what I would call "work friends" here, and I just try to enjoy my time with them around work stuff, but it doesn't often translate to us doing things outside of that. But there are so many things that I love here, I'll definitely be staying for now!

Indeed, I think people think moving overseas is a cure-all for their problems, but every country has their issues, and making friends is hard as an adult. That said, Im with you in that I love New Zealand and absolutely plan on staying here!!!! Where are you in New Zealand?

I know what you mean and I am a New Zealander. Found that in Australia, but only through shared interests- a group can make a difference? A couple of friends through work- but just a handful. The rest were low brow.

Why would anyone in their right mind want to move to New Zealand from the U.S.?… Maybe they are one of those crazy anti establishment hippie type who’s running away from something but they will learn very quickly that Kiwiland is not where they want to be!… Hell, even the Kiwis themselves don’t want to stay there!

as a kiwi i think it is hard to make close friends, my friend group is mainly friends from intermediate school. But if you can find a common group like hiking, or bouldering, or something might be a good way to make friends

@@TheAudaciousPath My then-boyfriend (now husband) parents had moved to Australia a few years before, so the idea was to spend a bit more time with them. It was supposed to be a temporary move for a few years - but the years have a way of getting away on you. Early on we hung out with other kiwi's but over time you do end up making friends with others - it was very slow though.

Yup, that is my experience too. Was unexpected to stay, but now it feels like home. That said, I do have this thought growing in my head to head that way for a road trip at some point once a major surgery is done!

I grew up in a city but in my early 50s moved to small provincial town. I found it very hard to make friends but got involved in local groups a d them started to connect. There is a hesitation to invest in FRIENDSHIP if you think the other person is an itinerant. My oldest friend is one I met in the first year of school 78years ago and we are the brothers we never had.

New Zealand, or at least Auckland, is very clique-y - it's hard to make friends outside work, realised this when I moved to NZ back in 2016. It's alright, who needs friends when you have back-breaking mortgage repayments.

I would agree with this unfortunately. it's so hard to make friends unless you do it through the expat community. That said, once I made one kiwi friend, the rest were easy. I think part of that is also stopping the criticism of the culture. I see a lot of Americans who have jus arrived and they are complaining about everything in every conversation, and while they think it is just friendly banter, it's actually subtly demeaning and not fun to be around. Not everyone does it of course, but I have seen it. 💜

The good thing about NZ is that there is so many solo travelers there (I think aha) so there is more opportunities to meet people in the same situation. I am probably going there late september too so feel free to get in touch :D

@@jeromemenoret1421 There definitely are a lot of solo travelers, but they are young. The travelers in their 30s are all couples from what I've seen. Late September is a great time, but still rainy! I love this video! However, please remember you're talking about *Auckland/North Island* a lot of the prices, etc are much lower in the South Island. I do get what you say, though - I'm planning to move to Quebec in a couple of years to be with my partner, because house prices are so high here. However, the grocery prices were higher there for produce coming into summer than they are here in Dunedin, NZ in winter (especially taking into account the exchange rate). Anyway, 'welcome home' (in the words of Dave Dobbyn!), and I'm glad to have you as one of us ❤

I totally get what you're saying about prices. that said, when I sailed about Marlborough Sounds and Akaroa areas, I found prices to be much higher than Auckland in terms of food. Housing prices were definitely lower, but so was income! Is your experience that buying power is still higher on the South Island? Hoorrray on the move! At least you're moving from one cold place to another. Definitely give yourself plenty of time to adjust before making any decisions on whether or not to stay! Making friends as an adult is no joke! I lived in Quebec sometime ago. The people are wonderful, Québécois is hard to learn, old French, very guttural and full of slang. I was working on a farm not far for Joliet. Hated the snow and the wind that blows right through you. Never been so cold in my life. Wishing you all the best, l know you will fit in well having a partner to help you settle.

As a twice immigrant myself, I learned a profound lesson once from a German immigrant to Australia. As a born and bred North Islander, I'm not too proud to encourage... nay, _implore_ you, to get to the South Island ASAP (in that statement you can read into some interisland rivalry, which by now, you'll understand is mostly related to sports, especially rugby). Show younger you that all the images of NZ's mainland that she put together can never do justice to the real thing. It's not perfect here but everywhere has troubles. It all comes down to which places' trouble is easier for you to deal with. I’ve lived here 20 years , nice home good business, but I’m returning back to the UK . The last ten years NZ has changed so much , not ranked right up there as one of the best places to live and with this co governance coming I can see even more problems, that is apart from bad housing , career suicide, rising crime, highest rate of homeless per capita in the developed world, huge drug problem , poor hospitals and education system etc etc, saying that NZ people are best I’ve ever met and I’ve travelled extensively, they are indeed amazing. Yeah it has great scenery but does lack any history and culture . I would certainly rent and just live there for a couple of years before just packing up and moving there.

My experience working in government is that some of these stats can be put down to the reporting. Having traveled extensively traveled around both NZ and the US (including recently), my personal experience is that NZ is doing better in most areas, and it feels safer in NZ. The working holiday visa will be the easiest way to get here. Biggest obstacle for most people will be to have enough money in your bank account upon arrival ( a visa requirement). Check out the NZ immigration website for details. Best wishes. 💜💜💜

Was back in NZ for 5 years prior to that, Then b4 that lived in Perth for 10 years. I would never live in NZ again, Aussie is just a better place to live and work. Heya! Thanks so much for the kind words. I’m not sure what you mean by R40, but in terms of ac units, they have the same systems as the USA, but the cost of electrics to run things is astronomical. My power bill more than doubles over the very cold and very hot months when I am heating and cooling. Does that answer your question? 💜

I think it is because it is just is far away from Europe where I come from and I have not been able to visit my family very often due to cost. While I definitely gained in some ways , I feel on reflection I actually lost more. I have struggled to make friends and have never really felt my heart was here. I feel that, and that is completely normal. I think it really helped that I have lived in multiple countries before living here so I had an idea of how it felt to live in other countries. I'd also lived in multiple states in the USA so had an idea of what was available to me if I went back. I think there are two things that ultimately made me stay though: watching the nastiness of the politics in the USA versus the elections here. While NZ and any other western country have a lot of similar issues and extremism in their elections, I really appreciated how people interacted. Generally speaking, it is very important to build rapport with someone here before you ever discuss politics, so by time you get to that discussion, there is a level of respect established that allows you to actually HEAR opposing opinions. I don't feel we HEAR each other in the USA when it comes to politics. Very quickly after meeting someone, everyone throws out their political opinions and then decides if it is worth investing any effort in each other. Thats a generalisation of course on both sides, but my experience nonetheless. The other thing that convinced me to stay here was going through the medical system with an extreme medical emergency (my ex almost died). While I'll be honest that there were HUGE GAPS, miscommunications, and mistakes made, overall, it was WAYYYY less stressful than dealing with the US system. No paperwork, no talking to insurance. I can't emphasize enough how much that reduced the stress load. But you do have to be very proactive here and take personal responsibility for double checking things and doing your research. For me, that was less stressful than talking to insurance. Hope this helps! 💜

I hear you, and you're not the first to say that. I can't speak for my own experience as Ive never lived outside of Auckland, but what I see on the expat Facebook groups is that its even harder to make friends in the smaller towns. That said, the exception is expats with kids, as they are able to meet other parents through their kids. 💜💜💜

We're actually just considering moving down to NZ from UK as my partner got a job offer in Christchurch and our family - it's us two and our dog - could easily (but of course expensively) relocate now given the visas and residency status. It’s hard to say if it’s everyone’s experience, but the way I think of it is, if you are aware, then it won’t be a giant point of contention when you arrive. Come to terms with it before you get here, and it will make your transition much much easier. And of course, your experience greatly depends on who you individually are as a person. Found it easy to make friends there. I left b/c there were limited career opportunities, hard work wasn't rewarded (low salaries with lots of unpaid overtime), and there was some prejudice at the office if you weren't Kiwi or English in terms of promotions. Weather wasn't great compared to California but better than England. Auckland is kind of boring and spread out. Nice to visit for nature and hiking though.

@@AriesLantzer I know it was legal to live off the land in some parts of the South Island in the bush, but the laws around this are quickly changing. Most land is owned, a lot of it by the Māori, and to the best of my knowledge, you always need a permit to build a permanent structure. 💜

Heya! It depends if you mean the region with the most sunny days (Napier) or the region with the most days that are warm (Gisborne) or the region with the warmest winter (Northland). Honestly though, the biggest issue is finding a home that is insulated and has double glazed windows so you’re warm inside. It can be only a little cold outside but it’ll feel freezing if you can’t keep your home warm. 💜💜💜

I’ve never been to Otago myself, but I know it’s one of the colder places of NZ. The University is know as a party school. There’s a lot of history there. I have been living in NZ for a year now, the country has some amazing scenery. But the horrible cities, damp houses, cost of living, all the crime and gangs, the horrible roads, the polluted rivers and lakes in which you can't swim (and that is like 75% of all the lakes and rivers) is really really really bad. There is nothing pristine about NZ there is so much pollution. On top of that the pay is half of that of what I can earn in the Netherlands. I am deeply deeply deeply disappointed after 12 months in NZ I am going back to the Netherlands.

I have been thinking for a long time now of moving to New Zealand for 2 years to begin with, single guy, no kids nothing that is holding me from going. I grew up with my grandparents on Vancouver Island Canada i love Van Isle. Its my home however i find overall im looking for a change in everything and weighing out a pros & cons list to it. Everything i love to do as im a everything putdoors guy i ski, kayak, trail run, bunjee jump / sky diving is on the list too! I do it all! Here in Canada everything you could want is here. The downside is new zealand doesnt have great health care then it seems? If you ever needed to see a dr. Canada thankfully because we are covered by medical plans paid through our taxes we can go to a walk in clinic to see dr.s any time thankfully without any charge. Im not sure how New Zealand is for that? I know overall it is a wonderful country and to not worry much about things there because it is overall a very safe country and the people are lovely. Any advice or tips you do have are much appreciated!

Heya! First and foremost, thank you very much for the kind words, and I am so pleased the video resonated with you! The public health care system is designed to cover emergencies. It is slightly overwhelmed, and the care is good, more or less so depending on the issue. As an American, I find the care to be on par, but the element of being covered by taxes and having no bills was HUGE for me. That said, I supplement the system with my own private health insurance. Many decide not to do this, but I think I would recommend insurance if you can afford it. If you cannot, I think the system is sufficient and the care is still good. I'm thinking about doing a video comparing and contrasting adventure activities available in the USA versus New Zealand. Interesting to you?

Cool video! Lived here for a year in 2015-2016 before returning home to Canada. Think about my stay nearly everyday. Would love to spend the rest of my days here I just found it so expensive and overall quality of life financially wise way down. The CAD currency is worth 20% more and my same profession in NZ paid me $50,000 NZD less than what I would have earned in Canada. Obviously this will vary greatly as to which country you come from and what your profession is but for me it just kinda scared me looking into the future. If I ever wanted to return to Canada in the future I instantly would have been in a bad spot. I feel like if you're coming from North America you need to be coming with a ton of $$ or you need to be all on commited to your move for the long haul lol.

Indeed, great advice about committing. It’s so hard to know if it will be a good fit until you arrive, and it also depends on where you are coming from. For me as an American, yes, I make significantly less, but I also get tons of public benefits I don’t get in the states. I also really just agree with the culture here, whereas I found myself misaligned with a lot of US values. That said, I’ve never lived in a perfect place, so you just have to choose what’s most valuable for you. 💜💜💜

I've traveled a lot and it's the only place that's constantly on my brain. It definitely takes a special person to make the leap because you're really detaching yourself from the rest of the world. Although it has everything you would need and then some its location is pretty isolated. Contacting people back home can be difficult due to the time change. I'm from Eastern Canada so literally the other side of the world. I was in my early 20's when I went so it kinda sucked at times too meeting people you really liked but they were moving on eventually back home as well. Best of luck on your stay! Enjoy every minute. It depends on your income level, but he really, yes, it’s hard to buy a home. I believe you have to be a resident before you can buy property, you’re generally looking at 20% down minimum (unless you qualify under a few schemes for low income or first house), and the average house price in Auckland at least is over $1million. For most people, it’s pretty unattainable. That said, there are still hubs of NZ with reasonable prices if you don’t mind living more rural. 5 dogs! Oh my! Sending you positive vibes for the transition. Give yourself a long time to mentally adjust. 💜💜💜

I've lived outside of NZ for 12 years now and I've come to notice that kiwis have a different work ethic to other cultures. When at work, kiwis work hard and fast so a lot gets done in a short amount of time. It's the only way to justify a lot of time off I guess

That’s true from what I’ve seen. The kiwis I’ve worked with are very particular about what work is worth their time. Less time on admin and bureaucracy. That said, I think part of it is the privilege of being from a small country with smaller businesses, and then by time kiwis go overseas, that work ethic is in their DNA.
