The Reality Of Getting A Degree For A Software Engineer-By A SWE Student At MIT

1. People often wonder, do you really need a degree to become a software engineer? Are developers who have a technical degree related to their field better at coding and their job? Short answer, both yes and no. For the longer answer, keep watching.
2. Firstly, all this “is college really trash or you don't need a college degree to be successful ” is a little subjective. It really depends on who you are and your current circumstances.
3. If you're a high school student who is currently deciding if they should apply for a technical degree like a 3 year bachelor's in computer science or a 4 year engineering degree or a Bachelor's in technology for computer science engineering or a similar branch. You have to decide for yourself if you want a technical education or a liberal education. So in a technical college all your classes are going to be related to your major, so in the case of computer science, all classes include math, programming which will have basic language syntaxes, data structures, popular algorithms and then different theory based subjects like computer networking, data base management, organization, architecture, operating systems and so on. In a liberal arts education, you might not have all of these. Some of the more detailed theory about computer hardware, really intermediate level of maths and some other niche topics may be absent in your necessary coursework but instead, you can take a lot of other classes from humanities department, about marketing, sales, psychology, business, entrepreneurship and so on. That makes you a lot more well-rounded as a person and as someone who's looking to go into the field willing to make their career. One of the drawbacks of attending college is that the curriculum doesn't match up with what is trendy in the market, so a framework called React is really popular right now and if you can develop with it and know how to use, you'll be a really valuable candidate. But colleges don't even go near that. Blockchain development is a hot topic right now. Most of the new funded startups are based on decentralisation, they're hiring really aggressively, optimising for growth and paying really well to bring good talent onboard. But you'd be hard pressed to find a college that offers courses on that, let alone an entire branch which specialises in it. So to make things easier, I'll be listing the pros and cons of attending college for computer science.

you do. I am telling you. you cant get interns believe me I dont have a degree and I am fighting for one i cant get interns. a degree can be the reason you can showcase your skills

Thanks for sharing your opinion! I just personally don't think that it is necessary, I've seen so many school students and teenagers get internships on their own merit, because they have the skills to get the job done. Much better than a lot of engineers graduating every year. A degree more so would be a good to have, but you don't NEED to have one to become a software engineer.
