I think there’s some truth to the snapping Chihuahua though. Every one I’ve ever met has done this to some degree- except the last one. The lady said he sometimes snapped at people, but he was on his best behavior when I was there. My Nan’s Chihuahua, Pippy, can be a real sweetheart, but he didn’t start out that way. Pip used to belong to her ex-boyfriend until a few years ago. The guy was moving and couldn’t take him, so she agreed to. He was unsocialized and not potty trained. Can you imagine, and 8 year old dog that isn’t potty trained? I know he has a small bladder, but geez... Anyway, I spent a lot of time with Nana over the summer, so I was the first one Pippy warmed up to. After that he started getting a bit more socialized, he’d even let 3 or 4 people be in the same room at once. I think Nan’s 10 year old terrier that he had know since he was a puppy helped. Even though he’s warmed up, he’ll literally bite your face off if it get’s too close for his liking, and he routinely bites strangers, the vet included, hard enough to draw blood.

It's great to see someone FINALLY talk about how people see chihuahuas. I have one tiny, cinnamon coloured baby with bug eyes and ears the size of your index finger. She is the sweetest, most loving and loyal dog. We are always connected at the hip, I'm told when I go out she becomes very depressed or she runs out of the house and waits for me in the driveway. Even though brains aren't her forte *she eats rocks and barks at lemons* she's still my little glue stick.

4 years ago I rescued a 12 yr old Long-haired Chi. He is the same color as yours. He was abused badly and would not let me touch him or take off the nasty leash that was tattered and dirty. The shelter volunteers told me not to make eye contact with him because he would take it as a threat. Poor little Snickers was really damaged. But I persevered and he is a darling. He will still occasionally snarl at me if I move to quickly to touch him. He loves a pet, but it is always on his terms. Poor little guys are so misunderstood, people should not get them if they do not understand their big personality.

Chihuahuas are all individuals and some are yappy (like mine) and some can be snappy (like mine). When she was very young, Angel actually bit me in the face once when I picked her up out of the cat food bowl. That's when I found out she is food-aggressive. But with patience, love and training, I've learned to mitigate this behavior. I just LOVE my little Angel. Yes, I actually named her Angel, which she is, 98% of the time. She is also a long-coat Chihuahua. She's white with apricot colored ears and spot of her rump. Angel potty-trained really fast and accidents are rare. :-) Denise in the USA

Chihuahuas are only "yappy" or "snappy" because of their owners. There are plenty of very well adjusted Chis out there. You just have to know how to train them properly and treat them right. Mine are very snappy with other dogs and strangers and it's 100% my fauly for not socializing them at a young age and basically letting them be the boss of me lol. Anyway my point is, don't blame the dog. It's literally never the dog, unless there is an underlying health issue.
@bryzcrochet3 жыл бұрын
Based on my experience with my chi and compared to my yorkie/shitzu mix I believe the Chi is the most happy when they are the only dog in the household. They need human companionship much more than the companionship of other dogs. They also can be very protective of "their humans". My girl loves our household and my granddaughters but she is 99% fixated on me, compared to others in the house, many Chi''s I know get along with all the people close to them but are at heart a one person dog. She tolerates our other dogs but frequently snaps at them and constantly has to be in charge. I've seen her run off pit bulls that were in our yard she can be so fierce. Little dogs but they have a huge heart and are extremely smart.

I too was very afraid to take him off his leash for fear of being attacked by a larger dog or even a vicious cat. We had no dental issues with him and he was not a big barker...only when the doorbell rang. I guess he was expecting company. He is fine with cats, chickens, horses, and noisy children. He loves other small dogs, and bigger dogs -as long as they aren't too exuberant in their greeting. He's the 2nd chi I've owned. He's very affectionate and loyal. I love this breed so much. ❤🤗

The weekend before this past Thanksgiving, i lost my best friend in the entire world.... My little girl Chi Harley. She was 20 years old. For 20 years that little dog every night slept under the covers curled up behind my knees. If i sat down somewhere she felt she needed to be in my lap. Actually, she felt she needed to be anywhere i was. God bless that little angel, she never had a feeble day in her entire life that is normally associated with very old dogs. Needless to say loosing her left a huge hole in my heart. I can't wait to find another Chi. What's funny, is in my 60 years of living I've had many dogs, but all of them had been big dogs. I mean from big to HUGE. Harley was my first "little" dog. She ruined me forever...lol. I can't say she had any bad habits except she HATED both rain and snow...lol. With either you could forget getting her to go outside to potty..lol. She would let you know quickly that she was a "Mexican" dog and DID NOT DO SNOW... Being 100 percent honest, even if she did have a bad habit, the 20 years that prescious little dog gave me was worth every second. God i miss that little girl so much..😭

We have a wake up kiss and cuddle session nearly every morning. I'm utterly dreading the day where she's no longer around. I'm also stressing about whether to relocate her with me abroad to a new home where she won't have a companion or whether to leave her with my mom where she grew up with her little chihuahua brother (they're inseparable). It breaks my heart because I feel like I'll lose her twice if I leave without her but I want to do what's best for her too and not be selfish. 😞

They are very bonded. Doggie tooth paste is beef and chicken flavor so he may allow you to brush. They love baby carrots. Chew them like bones. Fish oil on food great for coat. Be sure he is neutered as this stops marking ( piddling) . Do use piddle pads in house as with the piddle pads sprayed with attractant I have no accidents. The bladders are small so especially at night or need to go when home late works so good. Yes they love long hikes, camping, roughing it. Wish I lived close so my 2 could play. Piddle pads have to be the last resort! You are training them to go indoors! Plus, if used during daylight, what does that tell you about the owner? I'm watching this because I adopted two little chihuahuas who might have been abused, Frankie is two turning three and Mr. Beans is three turning four. We got them about a year ago and they barked a lot, were terrified of us, were scared of human food and treats, they were both severely underweight, but Beans was much skinnier; he was about five pounds soaking wet and you could feel each individual spine, and his eyes were really buggy looking with a dipped in nose. He is so scared of kisses that he snapped at me when we got him and gave me a nice scar, and he straight up split my friends lip in half when he went for a kiss without thinking of it and sent him to the ER. He's so much better now after starting him on anti anxiety medication and treating him with love. You can't even have a stern voice with them or they show you their belly. They did so many things to them that I could talk about it forever, but god forbid she finds this comment and gives me another lecture on how what she did wasn't abuse because she loved them. People are fun.

My dog is a long haired chihuahua and papillon mix. He is literally the best dog ever. He is so sweet, but brave and very active. He can run with me at least 2 miles. He’s well trained and doesn’t even need to be on a leash. I’ve taken him places as a therapy dog, and all the shy dogs at the dog park warm up to him immediately. He barely sheds, he only barks if someone knocks on the door. So cuddly and smart. He even has an Instagram account now. Haha. he’s Mr_Chewy_Bear if you want to see him. I think some smaller chihuahuas can be more fearful and yappy, but so many are not. I love this video! Hi Alfie🐶

They have so much personality in such a lil body, he's gotten me through so much emotional turmoil. My favorite thing if he'll come paw at me if I cry or he'll sit next to me and cuddle if I'm sick ❤ He loves all my family lol the other day my brother and and my dad were wrestling (playing) and my dog thought they were fighting and he started growling and pawing at them but like in a loving way so they'd stop lol It's definitely how you train them, my dog is potty trained and he will hold it until you let him out side. He knows to go to his room when he's being bad too ❤

Firstly what a considerate human being you are,a joy to listen to,i have had lurchers all my life until they have all passed on a few years ago, and they are huge compared to your little bundle of fun ,however I had the same concerns as yourself about walking in public places as they are hunting hounds and chase everything that moves hence organisation when in towns kept on leash and big runs kept for the countryside , its all about responsible ownership and knowing your dogs..yes i have always had two or three dogs at a time so that they can play together curl up together, I think it is good for them to have doggie company when you have to leave them at home for example, mostly they look upon you as the pack leader, and most unneutered dogs hump everything anyway so decision really is what you are comfortable for your dog.

I trained my long haired chihuahua to use the blue cat litter in a litter box and she barely EVER has accidents - she even shares her litter box with our cat. I've had 4 other chihuahuas that I trained with pee pads and outside and they would ALWAYS sneak pee and poop in other places when they thought that they could get away with it - plus they LOVED to pee on the bathroom rug! Anyway, I just thought I would post this because training my Bella to use the litter box was the best thing ever. I'm not sure if she's just a good dog, or if it's the availability of the litter box - but it works for us and maybe it will help someone else with a stubborn chihuahua! lol. NOW - if I could just get her to stop pulling worn underwear out of the laundry bin I would be overjoyed! (I'm sure you chihuahua owners know what i mean!)

I have puppy pads in the laundry room for my Hank, but he goes everywhere except on the puppy pads!!
@PinkIsTheBlondOfColors6 жыл бұрын
@@starrbrannon3883 So typical of these little lovable fluff balls! I swear, they KNOW they are adorable and that they can get away with sh*t! lol. If you can get him to go on one puppy pad, then take that and put it in a small litter box with a tiny bit of litter on top of it - all dogs love to go back to where they have peed before - it's instinctual. They seek out that urine smell, so that it triggers them to go. I've had 5 of them - and I always used the pads, but they ALWAYS would screw up and go on my bathroom mat or on carpets bc I think they get confused. This is my first one that I tried the litter box with, and she actually was litter trained by the breeder (not completely trained, but knew how to use it) and the first litter I used was what the breeder had used which was an all natural pine based litter called "Feline Pine" - you can get it on Amazon or chewy.com - then I switched her to the blue stuff just out of preference bc I can't stand "kitty litter dust". If you try putting him in the litter box like right after he wakes up in the am or after a nap and then keep taking him back to the litter box and say "go potty" or something like that, they eventually get it! Anyway, I hope I helped in some way - good luck, and let me know how it turns out:)

@@PinkIsTheBlondOfColors hi there Cynthia. Thanks for responding. I've had my little Hank for 5 years this month, and have had problems with him peeing in inappropriate places. My little Magic was 12 years old when she passed away this past July (I miss her SO much). We got her at 4 months of age, in December when there was ice & snow on the ground-so hubby & I decided to potty train our 1.5 pound baby on puppy pads inside where it was warm & safe. Eventually she came to like going outside to pee, although she still peed on her puppy pads as well. I am going to give the cat litter idea a try. I have four cats, and I'm a bit surprised Hank hasn't tried to eat cat "nuggets". Which the vet says is like candy for dogs. Ha, ha!! LOL!!
@PinkIsTheBlondOfColors6 жыл бұрын
@@starrbrannon3883 OMG that is so funny what you said about "dog candy nuggets" - ugh I GAG even typing this - but it IS a problem for chihuahuas it seems - it's common! I've literally sprinkled hot sauce into the cat's litter box to discourage it bc I've caught her 2 times trying to take "candy"! I am religious about using that rake and pulling any nuggets out of that litter, but as far as her having accidents, she really never does.... I'm sure you don't need any advice from me as you are a veteran survivor of these little master manipulators - but I've had 5 other chi's and this cat litter thing is the FIRST thing that has worked for me - hoping it may work for you:)

Alfie is a cutie! My long haired Chi is a black and tan who turns 6 years old at the end of this year. I met Dylan when he was a few days old, and then brought him home at 8 weeks old. I've had a number of Chis before him as well, and there are some things I have found to be true of them all. As far as house training, I feel like the fact that they are so small as puppies makes it more difficult for them to recognize what is their living space, and what is outside - where they are supposed to potty. So limiting their free roaming area indoors while you are teaching them the correct place to potty helps them learn this easier. Confine them to a smaller area indoors, and anticipate when they will need to potty and take them out at all of those times, ( then reward them profusely when they get it right) . My dog figured it out this way as a tiny baby, and I don't remember him ever having accidents indoors. He definitely never has as an adult. It did mean A LOT of work for me, ( going outside with him frequently as a pup ). But all babies require effort to care for! The crate worked for me as a confinement area, but I had to get him used to it gradually. I got rid of it when he was finished training. Also, humping isn't "normal" dog behavior unless the dog is not neutered. It is more of a dominance or anxiety activity. It doesn't mean he needs another dog, but maybe more exercise ( or surgery if that hasn't already happened )!

I love that you're sharing your experiences as a Chihuahua owner. ! I had the same ""stereotype " beliefs about Chihuahuas before I brought mine home. ( I actually rescued her from my grandkids!) She was there first and then they squired a golden retriever, chocolate Lab and German Shepard. The poor thing was a nervous wreck and they were going to take her to the shelter. ( Dog pound, I still call it .) Anyway, she was a whole different dog with me. Even my other kids commented, " Oh! She has a personality!" She was so entertaining... When I would get her leash out she was so excited she would dance around like a circus dog... On her hind legs and twirl around. Oh, and I love listening to you talk ! I think this video is already 2 years old but I just found it today. Thank you!

Love your video, Thank you! I was told that dogs are happier and live longer when they have a mate (partner, brother sister any other dog) and that chihuahuas actually prefer the company of other chihuahuas. So, I had always considered getting her a sister, so she will be getting one next week. We are all excited and I hope this will help her as well as help me have something to keep me going when my baby’s time comes.🙏❤️

Alphie is absolutely precious! My chi, Joey, also had a baby tooth that did not fall out. I adopted him when he was a little over a year old (two years ago) and the place I took him to be neutered just pulled it while he was under. I do my best to take care of his teeth by brushing a couple times a week and using Fresh Dental Clean Teeth Gel on the other days. So far, that seems to be really effective at preventing tartar buildup and his breath has no smell (stinky breath indicates decay). I'm mulling over when I should book a routine tooth cleaning for him - the vet thinks he probably doesn't need it yet, but we can't really see how his back teeth are doing. As for food, I actually decided to lower the frequency I give him kibble. I buy a nutrient base mix and add protein and some veggies. I don't think kibble is terrible, but I wouldn't feed myself a 100% processed diet, so I don't want to feed him that, either. He definitely enjoys eating the fresh stuff more and it makes me happy to provide that for him - and I am better able to enjoy my own food when he enjoys his.

I just adopted a two year old Chihuahua. She is the definition of a lap dog, extremely loving and sweet. She barks if someone comes to the door but that is expected. She is also afraid of other dogs. She is house trained, but she is on a very strict feeding and walking schedule. That is a must. Do not feed your dog from the table! If you just ignore the begging it will stop. Human food is not good for dogs, especially high in fat and sugar. It is very easy for Chihuahuas to get fat and because of the dental problems dog food and dog treats are best. I think people say they are not good with children because children can sometimes be to aggressive with the dog and Chihuahuas can get hurt, but if you monitor and teach children they need to be gentle they will be both be safe. Good luck with your Chihuahua they make wonderful companions!

I just lost my 14 year old Rat Terrier. Today at church, I was told of some free Chihuahua puppies. I want to get more than one of them. Mostly because I watched my Rat Terrier (Junior) get lonely for a playmate after his (true) sister (Bella) died. I don’t want another lonely dog. I’ve had nothing but Rat Terriers for almost 30 years now starting with Junior and Bella’s grandfather. If I get a male and a female puppy from my church friend will these littermates be good companions for life? I live alone and out of town. One of the comments has said the same warning about birds of prey my father gave me. Junior and Bella both weighed about 10 to 12 pounds. I saw many owls and other birds here, but they never attacked my dogs. A smaller dog will surely be in more danger though. Since I live alone, I would like to have more than one dog, but I don’t want to hurt any dog’s feelings by being friendly with another dog. If that is truly how Chihuahuas are. I would think that littermates would be good friends, but I’ve never had any Chihuahuas. Please let me know. Any advice would be appreciated.
