The problem with living in the South, as someone who's been here their whole life, is you can't convince people that a lot of time they're voting against their own self interest. You can't convince them that the same politicians who have served for 40-50 years don't give a shit about them, and never will. There are people who want change, but we're still outnumbered by ignorant, uninformed voters. I'm glad you experienced it, because it definitely opens your eyes to how different people in the country still live, but hopefully we can make some strides in the next few generations.

As a Memphian, we definitely have issues. Downtown has seen better days (with abandonment caused by white flight and Covid). The problem with that is that many of the tourist/visitor destinations are downtown which leaves a bad impression of the city. Racism is prevalent through many parts of the city, but there are many people who desire change. Sadly, while the city tries to change, the state will not allow many of the things it desires to do. Sure Graceland is interesting, but there is so much more to Memphis than just Elvis, as you found out. Memphis is a city of music and civil rights, not just the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll. Memphis has its good and bad parts. Addressing the underlying issues causing these problems is easier said than done, and we have a lot of work to do.

As someone from Tennessee, I can confirm the racism is quite prevalent. I didn't realize how intense it was until I moved up to New England. Totally different.

Virginian here. Driving by a confederate flag is always weird. I make sure to give em the ol 1 finger salute. Favorite vampire media: Nosferatu. I saw it 4 different times in the same week.

i had a tour guide in Savannah GA, and she described the humidity as walking through hot dog's breath, and she couldn't have described it better.

I used to go to Memphis yearly to support the National Ornamental Metals Museum there. It's worth a visit if you're into art.

As sombody who has lived in Memphis my entire life, i can confirm: I do not want to be here. Theres so much potential here but not enough resources. It's sad. I'm proud of the people in my city but I struggle to find pride in the city itself, if that makes sense
