I’m studying at university of Manchester for an exchange program in the spring of 2020. What dorms do you recommend and what locations are the best for living?
@Celinassousa5 жыл бұрын
Hey! I hope you love Manchester. You have some halls in the city centre which are excellent. Denmark road is really lovely but the social life is not that great. In general in the city centre people are more focused on studies. I would say the perfect place is Victoria Park, Hulme Hall, St. Anselm and Dalton Ellis are very nice. Specially, hulme hall. Then in fallowfield everything is crazy. Super sociable, except for Ashburne (which is also nice). The best hall in fallowfield is the new one, which actually looks like a hotel. It's Unsworth. After that one, the best ones are Woolton hall, Richmond park and ashburne hall
@annakh64144 жыл бұрын
@@Celinassousa Is Victoria Park generally nice or are there any that you wouldn't recommend at all? Cause the ones you mentioned are all catered but what about the self-catered ones? Thanks for this answer though, as an international student it's so difficult to get a hold on which ones are recommendable if you can't go over to check them out :)
@Celinassousa4 жыл бұрын
Anna KH I understand! Burkhardt is good, I know people there and because they share facilities with Hulme Hall it can be social as well. I don't know anyone staying in Liberty Point but it looks really good. However, I don't know how social it is. I don't know Canterbury but some friends of mine checked it out because they were thinking about moving there and they didn't like it. Some people don't like the texture of the walls because they kind of look like ”prison walls” (but some people don't mind them at all!)

@annakh64144 жыл бұрын
@@Celinassousa Okay, one more question (sorry to bother you but I literally don't know anyone from Manchester, I hope you don't mind): Do you know anything about the less expensive ones on City Campus like Whitworth Park or Wright Robinson? Or would you generally recommend taking a cheaper one or better to invest but have no issues? Cause I don't have that much money but people keep complaining about the cheaper ones (f.e. that Burkhardt has issues with mice and such). Thanks a lot again!

@Celinassousa5 жыл бұрын
Hi! I am glad you considered Manchester for your masters. I have never witnessed racism here. I don't think Manchester is a racist city. It's extraordinarily multicultural, and the university respects that a lot (and promotes it!). There are many inclusion events, and all ethnicities are respected. If some particular cases happened, I am not aware of them, but I don't think it's common.

Manchester is full of south asians (Pakistanis / Indians etc) I would say that there are more people of colour than those who are white who study at the University of Manchester. I’m Korean and applying to study Computer Science of this university. But I heard that majority of students here are Chinese. I know that in Business School more than 80% of students are Chinese. That’s awful. So I’m wondering is the situation same in the department of Computer Science. ( Please reply to me, thank you! )
@Celinassousa4 жыл бұрын
I am not getting your point. Why is the fact that 80% of the business school students are Chinese something ”awful”? The University of Manchester is an international and diverse university. I do know we have a high number of Chinese students. I don't know the percentage and I think all nationalities are welcome.
@아나킨스카이워커-f3u4 жыл бұрын
@@Celinassousa I want to make friends with students from different countries, not a single one. If 80% percent of students are Chinese, then I no longer have much opportunities to know about other countries. I absolutely don’t discriminate Chinese students. Actually I have Chinese blood. I just want to know different kinds of people, not one single kind. And also, if I study in Britain, I think I should pay more attention to know about British students. If I only know a few British students, then that’s absolutely weird.
@ifeomanwulu7414 жыл бұрын
@@아나킨스카이워커-f3u I understand your point about having a varied network. I'd recommend signing up with societies of interest and actively reaching out to others who aren't from your country. Like all things, we have to be intentional. If your programme incorporates group projects in its assessment style, that's an opportunity to have a varied team. Currently, my programme (PGT) is made up of about 92% Chinese students. 🙂 Good luck!

@Celinassousa4 жыл бұрын
That’s great!! Congratulations! Hopefully, we will all be there. Regarding the halls, if what’s more important to you is being close to campus than Victoria park or city campus are the best. For halls you have 3 areas (Victoria; city; Fallowfield) Victoria is closer to main campus (humanities, social sciences, med school). City campus is closer to north campus (sciences). It varies! Some courses have lectures in both campuses. So either city campus or Victoria will be close to campus!

I have heard Bristol is amazing for law!! Although our law teaching staff at Manchester are amazing, experts in their fields! Their research is amazing. I don’t know much about law at Durham but I have heard Durham is amazing overall. I would say it’s definitely between Bristol or Manchester! Think about what matters the most to you. Is it the teachers? The campus? The extra curricular opportunities? I would say the only down side of Manchester for law is that we don’t have a proper law library just for us, but that’s fine!

But overall I loved my experience in hulme Hall and the rooms are so modern!

@Celinassousa5 жыл бұрын
I would say make sure that you show how much potential you have. Connect everything you have done and your skills to your degree. Show them much your subject excites you. That’s what they want to know: 1) you love your degree 2) you are the right person for your degree. I would avoid clichés but there is nothing wrong with putting a little flair. Start your personal statement with a very catchy phrase. Then make your personal statement well structured and end with a conclusion!
