It's so wild to think about. I see hundreds of complete strangers every day, and every single one of them has an entire life. They have friends, family, jobs, hobbies, dreams, problems. They've loved, cried, gone through a lot. If we just said hello to one of them, they might become our best friend or wife/husband. They might give us wisdom or teach us skills we will forever be grateful for. They might change our lifes forever, or we change theirs. I think about this often while on the bus. You pass by hundreds of people on your journey, each person walking, cycling, sat on a bench, on the phone, walking with friends, walking alone. Each car that drives past, driving past hundreds of others, who will drive past hundreds more. Each with their own journey, with different destinations. Or maybe they don't have one. Maybe they're unsure. Maybe they wish they were on a different journey. Or wish they didn't have one at all. Maybe they feel like I do. Maybe not. Each one I notice, is each one I forget, seconds later. But it's nice to have met them for a brief moment.

When I was a boy my family took me on holiday camping in the forest. Down the hill and through some thick teatree, there was a lovely little bubbling creek that I would sit and listen to all day. The sound was so soothing, it washed over you and through you, filling you and emptying you at the same time. Months later, back in the city, back at school, it suddenly struck me: that creek was still out there making it's beautiful music, even with noone listening. It had been doing it before I was born and it would be doing it after I was dead. From then on, no matter where in the world I am, I can take myself back to that river bank. I hope you have a river bank or sea shore or windy moor that you can take yourself to when you need to.

For the past year or so, I've been going on these long walks. We're talking eight, nine, ten miles at a time (or thirteen, fourteen, and sixteen kilometers respectively). I find that they're good for both my physical well-being as well as my emotional health. My mental clarity sharpens considerably and I'm in a much better disposition after I go on one. I live in Los Angeles and there's a common misconception that it isn't a walkable city. It actually very much is and you see an awful lot more of it on foot than you would zipping through it in a car. Should you ever find yourself here, dear comment reader, I suggest you give it a try. But I digress. My point for bringing this up here is that, on these walks, I naturally pass other pedestrians and, as I do, just for a moment, I imagine what they're going through in life. We tend to think that we adopt a blank expression when we're out walking on our own, but even that can reveal a lot. You see worried, tense, or happy people, going about their lives in their own ways. I've never been all that good at connecting with others, but it's fascinating to behold the broad scope of humanity, especially against the chaotic, frenetic energy of a city. Terrific playlist you've compiled here. I don't usually listen to music when I go on these walks, opting instead for the urban white noise that surrounds me, but I'll definitely give this a listen on a future excursion!

i lost my father to drugs at age 8, followed by my mother when i was 11. my brother and i went to go live with our grandmother who took care of us in the darkest times, even though she'd lost her child too, she was always strong and helped us grieve. I fell into habits of substance abuse as a teen and attempted multiple times. I work in the funeral industry. It's my job to transport the bodies. I work in St Louis, the most dangerous city in America. I transport over 2000 bodies a year. As for the title, I usually walk ignoring the people around me, but what makes me realize how others have as many problems as I, is when I look to the windows of the buildings. Is then when I start to think about the people who lives inside and, what kind of troubles, fears or sadness could they be dealing with. It maybe sound strange, but that's how my brain works. Sorry for the long text and thank you for this melancholic compilation.

I think about this all the time. Like if a person is speeding down the highway I wonder why. Are they simply racing another car? Maybe they’re late to a meeting, or maybe a close loved one is in a hospital, maybe their wife is giving birth. I wonder what the person in another car is listening to, if we have similar music tastes and we just never know it. What was their childhood like and how has that affected them now? So many maybes and what ifs.
