At 79. I've been weight training for 60+ years. Started in 1961 as a Senior in high school. Still training but even though i can't lift the weights that i once did. My workouts are very important to my physical and mental wellbeing. Although at this point in my life even though it's harder for me to convince myself to hit the weights. The fulfillment that comes at the end of my workout makes it worthwhile.

Dude! you have the inspiration! You’ve done it, you know how it feels . Part of the Gym experience for me is to reach out and socialize with the people around me, regardless of their age. I find that people are very responsive to a sense of humour and communication, and both groups find it inspirational . LHBK isn’t just a moniker, it’s actually the fun part of working out. It was the same when I was a teenager, it’s the same now at 58. Have FUN with it!

I always enjoy your videos and this one especially resonates with me. I’m 57 years old, living with and caring for my mum who is almost 80 years old and needs help with everything…getting out of bed, dressing, feeding, toilet and cleaning. I now have a Marcy multi gym and a Power Rack . I’m currently using 5/3/1 beginner, on my fourth week. Been weight training eight months total. I started working out to be better able to assist mum but now I’m also working out for my own benefit. It scares me to see mum so frail and completely dependent on me. It sounds bad but I don’t want to end up that way. I find the weights hard work but it feels good to get a little stronger gradually. I also get steps while watching tv and a neighbour watches over mum while I get a 2.5 mile walk most days. Caring is difficult physically and mentally. Exercise helps a lot with improving my mood and in turn that makes me better at doing the things I need to do. I would not want to go back to just sitting around. Oh, I lost weight too. I’m five ft tall and lost 48 lbs, 16 lbs this year. My energy levels are much improved. Thanks for the interesting and informative videos.

I'm as old as you and I started strength training last year with my father because he got much weaker after some health problems. Now I think he's even fitter than before. When you're young it's fun to get stronger, you can move heavy things and make your tits bounce, but when you're older and workout you improve your quality of life. My father can now easily play with his grandchildren, lift them up, hike and do whatever he wants.

I've never really lifted weights, although I did a few very physical jobs when I was younger. I'm 38 this year and I've been doing some lifting the last 18 months. Also changed my diet and have eaten almost no sugar for the last 9 months. I've literally never felt healthier my entire life. I wouldn't say I'm super strict with my routine or ultra disciplined with my exercises... the point being that just a couple of small changes make a HUGE difference.

Hi Mitchell I couldn’t agreed more with this. 7 years ago I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. I was a thought period in my life and I was at the time a single parent for my to children at age 9 and 7 and my self 34 years old. When the doctors at Bergen Hospital in Norway where I live gave me this diagnoses i stopped and thought for a minute before I told the doctor “ okay then I’ll have som work to do” I joined the gym and started lifting weights, and still am. I have never been stronger and I’m now 41 years old. The doctors are very pleased with this and say that my way of living and strength training keeps the symptom away. Now I am blessed with the love of my life I meet I 2019 and she also started strength training together with me and we both are addicted to this lifestyle and for us and me this will be the lifestyle to keep the MS symptoms in chess. We also have got her mum to start weight training at a age of 65 and she can feel the benefits to. Sorry for the bad grammar 😅. Keep up the god work and we from Bergen in Norway are cheering for you to win several world strongest man titles 😎💪🏻

I could not agree more. Both my parents are living proof. My father trains always, walks, lifts weights. He has way more muscular endurance than me. Some of his stats are that of a 20 something fit person but he is 74yrs. Last year he had a routine chest CT & it was found he had a 78mm Aortic Arch aneurysm. The consensus was he should already be dead. It was the largest all the doctors, cardiologists had seen in a living person. Fast forward about 3 weeks he had long complex surgery which involved a complete Aortic Arch replacement. He almost didn’t make it. The medical team said it was his high level of fitness prior to surgery that made him pull through. It has been just over a year and he can almost do what he did before. The mental side of the recovery is the hardest. As for my mum she is 76 & smokes, i know. She can still get around on her own with shopping etc because we have had dogs all our lives and the one still alive 17yrs takes her on long walks or many short ones but that keeps my mum way above average active for her age. Plus she is fiercely independent. She has fallen many times in last 10yrs. I have witnessed it myself and you would think she broke every bone in her body but thanks to luck and high bone density she has got away with just severe bruising & aches for a few weeks. The bottom line is the more active you are the better for you in every way especially when you are older. I am only 46 & every doctor i ever had kept saying slow down. Don’t lift as much or as heavy not because I necessarily had an injury but because of outdated & disproven notions regarding age related frailty.

Short story about my mom. She had an aggressive form of Parkinson's. One of the best ways to delay symptoms is to exercise. She was always a super active person, always taking on new challenges and sports through life. We built a programs to keep her moving. At one point we started going for walks, we went 100 meters the first day and that was all she could manage... she wasn't obese (the exact opposite), it was just the disease attacking her for years. Each day we walked she made it a challenge to walk a bit further than the day before. We got up to going around the block, and she would get me to break out google maps to see the distance. Some times we would have to take lots of breaks and sit down on her walker, some days were really bad and she was so dizzy we just walked down the hallway of the house, but the goal was always to be better than before. In the winter we moved to walking inside a mall, every day I'd drive over pick her up, and head over to the mall to walk around. We kept up those walks until her youngest son had his wedding, the day after the wedding we made it to the end of the driveway and she got very dizzy, I got her back inside and that was the last time she walked. She survived for another year, and when her mind would wander, do you know what she wanted to do? just stand up, just get out of her chair and stand.... your comment on two lifespans, one where you can do what you still want to do and one where your body is still alive resonated for that reason... when she decided to give up walking, and not push, that was the end of one (although it had honestly ended earlier, she just pushed herself to maintain a bit of mobility, she was never going to curl, or golf or play baseball again). Moral of the story, do what you can, and try to do more the next day, if my mom could then you have no excuses. Also, one of the proudest moments of my life was when my mom said she would only walk with me, because she felt I was the only one strong enough to carry and catch her when she fell..... world's strongest man title has nothing on the title of my moms strongest son :)

I've always KINDA lifted, but only dumbells here and there in my late teens. Nothing serious and i was never very active anyways. Im 32 now and just started strength training and getting into strongman seriously about 6 months ago. I started in 2020 and between being a new dad and covid, i missed out on alot of gym time. Im pretty confident that i wont be in any competitions any time soon, but i give it my all, with everything i have, 4 days out of my week that i dedicate at least an hour to 2 hours of when i can. You and the other strongmen have been my inspiration to never quit. LHBK my friend. You're an inspiration 1:40

One hundred percent! I'm 51 and I don't think i've hit my prime yet. I workout (usually going heavy or very heavy) for about 10 hours a week at my home gym and am hitting new PR's, even after lifting for 30 years. In college I was 135 pounds, after big meal lol, and could barely bench 185 for a couple of reps. Now I hit 300+ on a regular basis, weighing in at around 170 pounds. Just dedication, protein shakes, and a love of moving the iron.

Age certainly is just another number. Back in May '77, I began serious training: aerobics and weight training. I could run a 7:00 mile without trainig. By September '82, I could run a sub 12:00 two-mile (fastest was 10:00 in '86). I've trained steadily since those days. My right grip strength was well below 40 kg in '77 and about 45 kg in '82. At 68 years old, I can now squeeze 51 kg with my right hand and I'm still able to go under 12:00 in the two-mile test.

Actually not EVERYONE in the world should be strength training. I have a condition called ME/CFS. And if I push past my body's limited aerobic capacity I go into something called Post Exterion Malaise (PEM) where I get really sick. And it's very hard for our bodies to recover from these crashes. So often times when you crash, that new level of sick is now your baseline level of health. So pushing yourself too far can actually make you really sick. It is not recommended by doctors that people with ME/CFS exercise. I really wish I could do strength training but unfortunately my body has decided that it does not like that (among many other things it doesn't like). ME/CFS and Long COVID are probably (as far as doctors can tell) the same thing. I also have POTS and MCAS. But aside from a few people I agree that strength training is beneficial to most people.

You say weights cannot do joint damage. This year I had been max squatting 100kg, I weigh about 74kg, age 56. I have stopped this, along with other things, due to knee pain. I do not want to get into bed with my knees keeping me awake, also I am concerned that I might end up with more pain in 5 years if I carry on with the max squats. So I do upper body training, walk quite a lot, swim, light cycling. I am interested in your thoughts. I probably have arthritis and maybe osgoods slatters sydrome. I certainly have had various injuries over the years on my knees and they do have big lumps. I cannot kneel. As another thing I have started recently training with rings, I am really amazed at how training with them can change you, have you ever tried anything with rings?

Mitch, really enjoy your channel and the the content you make! But please, please, stop colabing with my favourite athletes. Since you made videos with the cross fitters and Rose, they've all gone on to lose or under perform 😂😢

The whole "weights injure you" is silly. Sure, if you are 65 years old and going for a powerlifting record you might injure yourself, but as we've seen, pushing to the limits of everything has higher risk.
