Fun fact: your brain prevents you from using all of your muscular power. We only use about a third of the power at any given time, outside of life or death scenarios like the mother lifting the car thing. Otherwise, we very easily could rip our muscles from the bone, even someone who doesn't lift.

Super cool seeing you talk with Dr. Mike, I love the focus on scientific literature and practical result you and Dr. Mike have been bringing to the fitness social media landscape. The discussion of different, health, strength and appearance goals, and how the evidence converges but the paths can differ because of the different end goals is nuance that is frequently missed. Even the psychology aspect, with a full time sedentary job and a family there's only so much willpower I have to push myself in the gym, it is a real element to manage. Absolutely engrossing end to end.

Injury risk is the #1 reason i train the vast majority of my lifts over 10 reps now. I know that if i'm slightly out of my groove on a rep with a weight that i can do for 12-15, way safer than being out of the groove on a 5-6 RM. There's also the mental fatigue of using weights that are scary - it's a real thing. After i quit powerlifting, i never got worried about lifting anymore, and it was such a massive relief not to be spending the entire day before heavy squat session thinking about being crushed by your 90% of 1RM. I know there's some debate around whether lower reps is more efficient fatigue-wise, but i think the lower mental stress offsets that for me.

Dude! I agree with you soo much. I’m a former track athlete (thrower). Been lifting for 40 years now (I’m 54) best bench 495 and still can do close to 400. Over the past 6-8 months I’ve been taking my training slowly up to the 8-10 range, then 10-12 range, then to the 12-15 range and lately I’ve been playing with 15-20 range. Muscles feel a like they are getting the same work, tendons/joints feel sooooo much better, psyche is so much better and I’m hungry to lift every day. A couple weeks ago I got talked into a heavy bench day (haven’t benched in a long while). Easily did a triple at 335. My elbows and wrists hurt for days. I’m getting much more out of higher reps, lower loads, maybe a few more sets. Still maintaining strength without even trying, definitely building muscle.
