I’m all for supporting the official releases of games, but if a company discontinues their games and it’s not available for a reasonable price, I consider it fair game. If they don’t want me to emulate, they need to make it available on a current system.

Emulation is a core part of my gaming life. I simply refuse to reward developers for their lack of interest in their own backlogs. I play PS2 games in 4K with achievements on my phone(!) Emulation has let me play so many games from my childhood and before I was born, they're all precious and deserve preservation. These emulators are the definitive version of these games most of the time.

Without game dumping, console jailbreaking and emulation, we would probably have hundreds of games and DLCs as lost media. The big companies themselves often lose their old games.. afterall, Nintendo was using ROMs to resell some of their classics again which means they don't even have the source code to recompile, let alone the release, compiled build.
@Petronious
@Petronious 13 күн бұрын
Always good to hear an in-depth look at this topic, and you've covered a lot of angles which is good. With emulation for me, I often take the approach most people don't consider. Or more accurately, the approach most people just playing the games alone don't even need to consider. I use Emulators as a piece of equipment, in the same way I set up my lights before turning on my camera to film for a video. To make the picture look better. Without an emulator, I'd have no realistically affordable way to capture footage of older titles AND have it look decent enough for me to be happy with to present a video. I'm aware there are retro upscalers but the cost of those is a little to high for me to justify as someone who's only after some decent footage and not so much using the physical game media itself. Basically, for my current set up I need a system to have HDMI output. If I don't have one then emulation is usually where I go from there. This also means handheld games are almost always immediately sent to an emulator if in planning on making a video about one. But this is also why I'll never address any weird emulation related glitches in a review, as it's not the games fault, but even then... a lot of the time I don't need to because these days a lot of the systems I would typically emulate... The emulation is flawless anyway. I do often go out of my way to buy the original games if I can, though. I do like to own them. But again, these days it's usually for the sake of my video content. To show off the case, show the manual up close, and to hold up the actual game to camera etc. I recently did this with a few of the Tony Hawk games, myself. I wanted to own the games but still needed to emulate for decent quality footage. But I'll only do that if I can find those games used, in decent condition and for a fairly affordable price. I'm not going to be buying a mint copy of Tombi off of a scalper for £100+ that's for sure! And even then, the best quality footage I could get from a PS1 game, if I were to use the physical discs on the original hardware I have available to me... would be via my PS3 slim... Which itself uses an emulator to get those games running... And it's not even a very good emulator at that! So if I am going to use an emulator to get decent footage of a game... Then I may as use a good emulator that's still being improved on. Aside from that, my thoughts mostly align with yours. If a licensing agreement prevents it, or if the publisher simply doesn't care to provide a way for me to play their older games... Then I'll find other (and usually better) means elsewhere on the high seas. This is why I'm usually happy with remasters. I'm all for convenience, and they can help fund future games.

@@Petronious Thank you for leaving a comment, been a fan of yours for years so really cool to see! @@willwokbir No problem. I'm not very active in bigger group chats and servers but when you posted your video on discord I thought I'd give it a watch! And yeah I figured you'd understand my angle because of making this video. But I've friends at work that enjoy retro games but don't make video content so for them, emulation rarely comes into the picture so they went down the route of getting retro upscalers and the like. Whereas I spent that same amount of money on a camera and some lights! Swings and roundabouts, really! We're both still able to play and talk about those games together at least. I've learnt some solid Tony Hawk tips from them in recent months after telling them about me playing those games 😅

The moral to Nintendo's handling of official emulation is this: Capitalism is not about making a profit by giving customers convenience. Capitalism is about controlling people and things, THROUGH profit. The fan emulators will always be more advanced because they are made by people who actively give a damn, whereas the companies make these things bad on purpose because it's safer to pay the official owners for emulators and avoid any sudden drop of service for legal reasons. OH WAIT! Once we move on to the next console, the current official emulation service will die. .... These companies aren't run by inept good guys. They're run by smart assholes.

Official re-releases are awesome, especially when something's cherished. However, once something's out there and has stood the test of time to the point of being put to rest sales-wise for years, and become part of the social zeitgeist... many argue it then belongs to the public. I argue that. Starwars and Indiana Jones spring to mind as properties that inspired derivative works made to bring people together. Things like Final Fantasy II & III, as well as V, NEVER got releases here on their respective systems originally, therefore people who discover them and can share them to be cherished... sour grapes to the publisher.

I see some people saying "If this or that condition is filled, then emulation yada yada." Adding conditions to the conversation that make it sound as if emulation is an issue of where moral priorities are, and also implying emulation and piracy are the same. For those who think in either of these ways, they are confused. As to piracy, this is criminal because you've gone around the distribution process - it's not quite theft, it's getting something below-board when you were supposed to get it above-board, and what is the board (board means table here) is decided largely by whoever made the thing. Breaking the right of distribution is criminal. Cracking security measures with intent to commit a crime is criminal. Collecting and distributing closed-source code without rights is criminal. Building, or using a program that lets you use somebody else's computer program is not illegal. As to emulating games, I want the most reliable and easy to access experience. I do not not want your subscription service; I do not want an account on your server; I do not want your space-taking device or its connections; I certainly do not want a product that fails to function in general or without an outside source verifying that I have not tampered with the game. All of these options add steps between myself and the game, which are contrary to having entertainment and using it and which I have methods at my disposal to avoid - I will have this cake and I shall eat it, too.

In the case of Mother 3, a mix of minor localization issues and major Music Licensing issues are speculated to be the real reasons as to why it hasn't been localized. The later reason is understandable, as to rework tons of music that is integral to the game is too much effort, and the series sales doesn't justify to license multiple timeless and popular music that was sampled and homaged.

Yeah. Emulation is pretty much a necessity for preserving videogames history. Not to mention all the enhancements and cool stuff that's only possible thanks to emulators, upscaling that makes some old games look absolutely stunning, (easier) modding, all the cool stuff that can be done with memory editing among many other things like fan translation patches, or my favorite: undubs, because i'm original voice purist, some of these just straight up crash/don't work on actual hardware, especially in cases like with Rune Factory Frontier. Piracy is honestly not that bad either and essentially helps with preservation. There's so much gems i wouldn't be able to experience if not for it because either the games themselves or platforms they're stuck on are simply not officially on sale, and i'm sure as hell not buying used overpriced stuff...and certainly not buying a nintendo console, that's for sure, because i hate Nintendo. I'm genuinely glad PS4's emulation is taking off too since i sold my PS4 years ago. To be honest i'm very reluctant to even give a try to any games that's older than PS2 era due to how archaic those are and mostly didn't age well, but for the sake of people who care about those as well as those who care about preserving libraries of the more obscure/failed consoles, i hope those will eventually take off and become stable too. This was a great watch, subscribed. I honestly can kind of relate to how you got into gaming since for me it was similar, a relative brought very cheap disks with pirated games, so technically for me it began with piracy, too.

Its been a long time since I have seen someone make a video thats this based. Also to answer why people hate emulation, its simply because the people who do hate it don't see any value in video games as an art form and don't see at as worthy of being preserved and made more accessible. They just see games as a disposable product which is disheartening. There is also the second group of people that don't have the full context that you explained in this video. Thank you for making this video. More people need to hear these points because as you said people severely underestimate the importance of third party emulation. @@willwokbir Yeah I get it. I have the same love for third party emulation as well. Whenever I see someone try to argue that: "Games are not art and are not worthy of being preserved and made more accessible" It actually infuriates me. Like, what makes these people think they have the right to gate keep the word "art" simply because something dose not interest them or dose not meet there ridiculous standards? Its okay if you don't like games, but don't try to invalidate other peoples passion, enjoyment or thoughts on games simply because the medium dose not interest you. I really don't get why people are so closed minded on this. Can these people not just swallow their pride and just accept that games are not what they use to be back in the 80's? Games have gone a long way since then and are more capable of telling stories then ever.

The way you phrased it in this Video is that Emulation=piracy which it doesn't I bought firemblem for famicom dumped the rom and played a translation patch through an emulator. I can also dump Mother 3 through my GB-operator and play the translation patch on and EZ-Flash flashcart or emulator with no piracy involed. Emulation isn't piracy.
@willwokbir
@willwokbir 22 күн бұрын
@@blinkingjarl482 i wasn’t trying to equate the two but i certainly could have phrased things better to make that clearer, there was actually a big segment i cut about the legality of emulation (because i felt like it would make more sense as it’s own video later down the line) and a lot of that segment explored the morality of rom dumping and when i cut it i felt like a lot of the piracy jokes still fit the video since it was supposed to regard how companies dislike emulation even if done legally, i can definitely see though how it comes off and that was my bad, i appreciate you pointing this out to me, i hadn’t really thought about it and it’s a very valid criticism so thank you for pointing it out!

I generally don't pirate until about two gens old but at least one. I just started looking into Wii-U and very recently 3DS. I generally just don't want to support scalpers that call themselves collectors. And I find I tend towards the more obscure stuff. Like the Amiga CD32 that was not even sold in my country. I really love emulation from a preservation standpoint and to allow me access to things I would have never ever been able to find at an affordable price. That and making better versions of games as you have stated. Chrono Trigger was spot on as the best version being modded with MSU-1 but really everything that you can do by MSU-1 emulation you can do with dumpers and flashcarts.

I just bought a PS2, because of emulation. Emulators are great but they just ain't the same. As good as PCSX2 is, it's still not as good as the real thing. But I also don't have 160 dollars to spend on Silent Hill 2 so it's a great backup plan to have. Also lol at expecting Nintendo to release Mother 3 when they have a gazilion Japan only Fire Emblem games.

i mean, yes, but let's be real, most of people just make excuses... if a company release a retro game for modern consoles or PC, those people who whine aboy "gaming preservation" will still play those games via emulation instead of buying the game (me included, the difference is that I admit that I pirate games instead of making excuses)
