Hey Randy what are your thoughts on water levels? Here is what I have experienced. When the lake is dropping the bite will be good. As they hold the water steady…that’s also good. When they raise the water several feet on the colder banks I noticed the fish tend to go deeper and the bite drops ways off. Keep a watch on lake depth and water fluctuations? Any history with that?

I think this clip saved me a lot of time. Thank you. I live in a large northern city with a couple of smallish lakes and resevoirs. It rains quite a bit and the water run off from the roads goes into these waterbodies. Visibility is generally poor before the water freezes up. Maybe ice fishing mid winter would be better an option, won't it?

Yesterday on my home Blake the water finally got down into the 40s average temperature was 48.49 here in Kansas. Been tearing them up up until yesterday we didn't have any wind high pressure system it got tough that's the first time the water temperatures got down into the 40s also ground out all day for 14 bites. I've always considered winter time fishing once that water gets under 50°. And I agree the water clarity is extremely important once the water starts getting cold.

I think I tend to do better when the water temperature is 60 to 50 degrees. Seems to be a magic temperature for jig fishing and that’s what I like to use a lot.

You should do a video on lenses for sight fishing if you haven’t already
@randyblaukatintuitive3 жыл бұрын
Will do!
@shadygraves3 жыл бұрын
Excellent point! Lens color is largely overlooked by many anglers. For sight fishing, lighter colored lenses are better! Dark gray is out; those are for super bright days and ocean fishing. Amber, bronze, copper, and vermillion (in that order) allow for more light pentration, giving you better visual acuity when sight fishing. Amber is best in my opinion, because it highlights greens, allowing you to see bass easier. Yellow lenses are a must on dark or rainy days, as they allow even more light pentration.

Great topic today. I confess that I’m one of those people. One cold water bait I don’t hear much about these days is the Shad Rap. Could you please do a video on it. Which…Where….How??
@shadygraves3 жыл бұрын
The Shad Rap doesn't have the following it did when it was introduced in the early 80s, where you could rent one for $25 or buy one for $50 or more. It still produces, though. I've caught largemouths over 8lbs and spotted bass over 6lbs on it. There are several keys to it's success. 1st, and I'm sure Randy would agree, is CASTABILITY. Spinning gear is much easier, since it's so lightweight. 6-10lb line on a 6'6"-7'6" Medium or Medium Light rod is best. 2nd is color. Knowing your primary forage is key. I use shad (Live River Shad, Shad, Silver/black) most of the time, with the crawfish colors (crawdad, blaze, gold) getting the nod in early spring. In spring, I look for secondary creek points in Northeast or Northwest spawning pockets (Southern facing). For fall fishing, I follow the shad on their annual upstream migrations to tailraces and creek and pocket backs. Winter can be tremendous on main river structure, in current, where shad schools are abundant. Naturally, the colder the water, the slower you fish it. I still like hook solder or suspendots for slow, cold water winter fishing.

@@shadygraves Thanks👍 I have collected 5 or 6 of them over the years but never caught a thing on them. I did figure out throwing them on spinning gear and light line.

Randy there is hardly a video that you do not talk about water clarity/visibility. My guess is, with your experience you have a good idea what the water conditions are when you are fishing. It would be nice if you could do a video or give some trips on how a novice could determine what the water clarity/visibility at different depths. Love your two channels. I have continued to learn so much. Thanks for all your time and hard work.

Oh I know the reason I suck at fishing in the Winter. I am a bank fisherman and, I can't reach the bass with my casts while they are in the deep water in the middle of the lake! I don't own a boat and my lakes don't have drop offs so, my casts are finding 3-4 feet of water at my full casting distance. Not many jerk baits work well when you are fishing in 3-4" of water and, the bass are in spots I can't reach. I basically have to wait for March/April, when the mommy's start to search out spawning areas on warm days. My dilemma.

However when I fish when it’s 15 outside an water temp less than 48 I like the stain water with a spinner bait , when I want to throw an a rig I like more clearer however down here on the Tennessee river out of Florence Alabama an Wilson lake these fish love the chartuese colors they are used to it an we have to put smart these big fish at times an they love sneaking around low water clarity for ambushing bait.

How do you determine visibility Could you give us some tips On a technique that is repeatable other than me just guessing
@shadygraves3 жыл бұрын
Visibility is determined by how far you can see a lure in the water. A white or chartreuse lure is best, since it's more visible. The distance or depth that it disappears from sight is your water's visibility.

i mainly like hitting 20-30 foot depth year round, but now i live at kentucky lake. and its so shallow from the banks im only maybe hitting around 10 foot. its kind of annoying since from the banks i cant target the water i like to fish. i might have to get a kayak or a super cheap boat soon. though mainly for winter i like being deep since you can still get em shallow most the other times of year but still ive always got my best fish deeper at castaic. but i also fish whenever i can and before it was mainly off feeding time hours so i like just being deeper unless its super early or later in evening when they are chasing bait on the banks. i live near ken lake area so i just fish around here to save on gas also since i like to fish a lot. but i prob wont go much this winter from the shoreline since i figures unless i happen on some shad being pushed up on the banks i prob wont get too many smallies or largies in 10 foot or less. or any fish really lol.
