Child abuse, domestic violence? Let's run the facts here. 1) Ruby literally ran away from home 2) Ruby caused a giant havoc across 2 major areas; An abandoned ship and slateport. Obviously Norman would need to discipline his kid. If my kid did that, *A punch is not what I would do*
@elithesia781Ай бұрын
I'm going to have to disagree with the initial statement that Ruby doesn't consider his mother's feelings at all before running away. Because there's a panel where he looks downstairs and sees her shortly before he leaves, and he silently apologizes to her with a sad look on his face (maybe it varies between translations, but I think all are important to consider details from). He is thinking of her and knows that this will probably hurt her, but he thinks it's the only way he'll be able to achieve his dream, especially since we know that Norman has been opposing it for a while and Ruby doesn't really have any reason to believe that he would suddenly change his mind out of the blue. I know people get on Ruby's case a lot for not waiting for a few hours for Norman to come home and tell him, but if you really think about it...He already waited 5 years for that, and the moment never came until, from Ruby's limited perspective, it was convenient for Norman. We learn later that's not true, but I think people really forget that Ruby was never told jack squat (partially for good reason), so all he really has to go on are his own interpretations. Not to mention that Norman was against Ruby's desire to do contests when he wasn't around, which I honestly think would piss off anyone at any age, but it's especially prominent because he's a child. Ruby's selfishness in that regard at least partially stems from a certain feeling of "If I don't stand up for me, no one else will", (+ a hell of a lot of trauma avoidance) and while it may not be the most clear on a first readthrough, it's really not a surprise if you're paying attention. Side Note: I really like the one translation of the manga where, when Ruby is opening up about the Salamence incident to Wallace, he says "I lost everything" instead of "I lost a friend". It implies that he also blames himself for the fact Norman left the family and part of his anger might stem from the fact that he might genuinely think his father hates him in that context, and his sadness might instead manifest as anger. It makes their relationship feel even more tragic because Norman ultimately couldn't protect him from the blame in every facet. It actually makes me wish they actually had more time to talk because imagine how much more impactful it would be if Norman temporarily died finally understanding his son's feelings and seeing why things happened in the present while Ruby comes to understand the past. Then his survival really gives you the feeling they can start down a path of healing rather than putting a skewed amount of the burden on solely Ruby. Sorry for ranting. I just really like the Ruby-Sapphire arc and actually wish it went a little bit deeper into certain things on a psychological/emotional level because that's my bread and butter. This probably being my biggest example.

You're totally right, when I talk about him caring for his dreams and that not being egoistical by nature is in part that, what you said, what I'm talking about too. Ruby was never was influenced to or given a clue to follow his dreams, he was given no signal that he could do that even if eventually, he was ostracized and denied of his dreams. In pokémon world for some reason childrens there have way more liberty and have the care from pokémon center if they are away from home as well as they have means of income (pokémon battles, being an entertrainer like Ruby's dream, being a helper for a professor or resecher, pokémon trainer, gym leader, etc) so in his pov he had the means and resources for independence and was in the age and possibility of being independent and his parents never showed any sign that they would permit it, permit his independence, so he runned away. We can see, narratively and psychologicaly speaking, the whys and how it ended up like that and resulting in that (him running away). For his pov other childs had more independence and oportunity than him and he could achieve that by running away and securing his independence and liberty by force.

The real reason is because in tradional Japanese culture males are expected to be the breadwinners of the household. While women stay home and raise the kids and look after the homestead. The creator of Pokémon has stated the lack of a father figure in the games is to actually reflect their real life experience with their dad barely being home and seldom seeing them. Also Pokémon was inspired by the creators childhood involving catching horned beetles and making them fight each other with other friends or beetle battle groups. Also with the creators love of exploring and wanted to create a game centered around their own childhood and life experience. Vola. Pokémon is born. The more you know

To this day i still believe Ruby Sapphire is Pokemon Adventure at its peak, not only does it have a beautiful stories that depict the growth of the 2 main characters, but also makes side characters with barely any role in the game like Winona, Courtney, and especially Norman very compelling. No matter how many pros this Norman gets, as somebody who suffered from domestic abuse myself, I can't commend this sort of behaviour. No matter the situation, a father - a parent - should never beat his child. So called "tough love" can easily destroy any sort of trust and understanding between a parent and a child, if not cripple a person mentally. Norman from RSE/ORAS way better.
@TheOverlordENDАй бұрын
It's a hard thing to say; The line between Discipline and abuse is very thin. If you're too soft on them, they will get spoiled (feeling entitled), if you're too hard on them (they won't trust you).
@Justic_Ай бұрын
I'm pretty sure that was at least partially the point of Normans character in the manga, his "tough love" isn't supposed to be a good thing, it's one of the reasons this entire misunderstanding between him and Ruby existed in the first place, their battle was the result of his lack of communicating with his son leading Ruby to distance himself and to ultimately run away, which enraged Norman. In the end, what mended their relationship wasn't Normans "tough love" (if anything the "tough love"-approach almost led to them both dying), but Norman speaking clearly and giving his son his support.
@nguyenphuc306Ай бұрын
A bit excessive but Norman only beats his son that one time and it is because he is running away from home. May be it is the different in culture but in Asia, parent hit their child when they did something wrong is quite normal so I don't feel Norman's action is that wrong. Ruby really causes this parent sad and angry.
@TheOverlordENDАй бұрын
@@nguyenphuc306 In Asia, if your teenage child inconvenienced others; You would get a beating. My friend literally got smacked down into the floor after getting caught smoking in elementary grade by his dad. And I've seen other kids get thrown into the river or lake for doing mischief.

Norman's story kind of reminds me of my own story with my dad, I wasn't really close with my dad because he wasn't there for my childhood, when growing up my father was in the US while my family and I were in PR, from my understanding he had a very good job at a factory in CT where he manufactured aircraft parts or something, and as his job was very demanding he was usually working overtime and stuff and would only take time off like once a year for Xmas and stuff, and that was when he would get on a plane to be with us, and my interactions with the man were not very good because his hobbies included doing work as a handyman or mechanic, while my hobbies included mainly playing videogames or listening to music and stuff, and I was actually really bad at sports because I wasn't taught by my father to play anything, so that is why my interests started lining up with art related stuff such as music, and I actually learned to play a bunch of instruments, because the Music teacher looked after me during breaks and even during lunch, and he even told my mom that I had a knack for music and that the skill should be further developed by going to an art school, but this is where my dad didn't really understand any of it and did not believe in me, he wanted me to be an athlete like my brother or a math wiz like my other brother, and through his interactions with them I truly felt like he was proud of them while he mostly looked down on my interests and stuff, and as such I didn't go to an art school or did the things I liked, but I eventually did get into computers and became IT, mostly because my family were very bad with technology, and all sorts of stuff at home would break down with no money to repair things, so I kind of took it upon myself to take apart the stuff that broke and try to figure out how everything worked, and in some cases I did manage to repair some things, which is why I developed that skillset since I always had stuff to repair, and eventually I even got a job that I've been working at for about 8 years now, and it was only after my father was at his deathbed that he confessed his thoughts to me, apparently he was always proud of me and wanted to see me succeed at things, but the reason why he didn't let me pursue anything in art, was because he was afraid that I would be unable to make anything of myself, since he did see many family members that had gone through similar things but were leading awful lives due to having no steady income and stuff, and as such he didn't want me to struggle with such a life, which is why he was tough on me but he was actually real proud that I made something out of myself, and that I succeeded in becoming real good with IT and such, especially considering how bad he was with technology himself, where he barely even knew how to use his smartphone and would always come to me for stuff related to tech, and that was when I basically made peace with my old man, and I now miss him as he is no longer around. TLDR All parents love their kids, its just that they have a hard time showing it sometimes, and for some they try to raise their kids with tough love, just to try and get them used to the hardships of reality, and the only way to truly know about this kind of stuff, is to just have a heart to heart with your folks, and closing them from your lives is just not the right answer unless they are actually toxic and bad people.

This is a bad habit of both of them, Norman doesn't give Ruby the chance to explain and Ruby doesn't want to explain. The real reason: Japanese work culture and the fact that these games were appealing to kids. Often times because of how often dads were in the office crunching away, their kids would literally either never see them, or only see them a few hours a day. This culture then permeates into the games that are being marketed towards said kids, and you get a section of media where deadbeat dads are pretty prevalent. Earthbound, One Piece, Pokemon, MHA... All series aimed towards kids with absent fathers that I can name off the top of my head.

Why pokemon doesn't have dad's: ❌️ Ruby's dad back story: ✔️
@keyoteamendelbar8742Ай бұрын
I actually heard of a different theory. In Japan, having a single mother is actually common and having a proper family was almost impossible unless you are a company president.

The reason why dads don't exist and moms are mostly just hometown decors (except for the DPPT mom, she was off doing her own thing when we run into her in Hearthome) is cause you can't have an adventure with parents looming over unless they're a problem like Norman.

Giovanni actually was a pretty decent father. And he’s the bad guy.

the player character's dad in pokemon doesnt want to admit that they're what happens if you never leave your room and stop playing the game console so they omitted themselves from the game entirely and forced the player character to avoid taking the same path in life if they wanted to make any progress through their father's game which is actually the life of the player character.

It's a cool story but when most anime/mangs fathers are that way it gets weird. I do want some basic good fathers sometimes 😊

Because any normal child that had a good father figure wouldn't let their child wander around with strangers and Pokemon. It's a very single mother thing to do.
