Light took justice into his own hands and did, arguably, a better job then any justice system that was in place before and after he became Kira. I do wonder if the amount of good he did was worth the amount of evil he committed? for me it's hard to say. I think the saying " to defeat a monster you have to become a monster" applies pretty well to him. In a way its like he sacrificed himself to evil, in order to make great change for the betterment of the world, or at least that's what he seemed to believe.
