The reason your AKAI MPC has 8 analog outs (...and why you should use them)

In this video, I use the AKAI MPC 3000 to discuss the pros of using 8 analog outs vs. the stereo outs. I also go over serial processing with outboard gear, my analog recording workflow, and explore the idea that sound design and mixing is just as important to sample selection in composing hip-hop beats, lo-fi beats and all groove-focused, sample-based music.

Omg bro what a breath of fresh air. I’ve been waiting for someone to do exactly this please please do not stop making videos I’m about to watch all of them in between trying to play catch up to what I have seen you doin with just your work flow and flips. You did not say plug-in once and that easily will make me get on th phone and tell my buddy to subscribe. I could go on and on about how excited I am but I’ll chill. Thank you very much

Some great advice in here but there's something magic about the way a lot of MPCs sum the signal to the stereo output, especially when you push it hard. Same goes for clipping the inputs on the way in - tonnes of punch to be gained from doing things this way.

Second that -- I love clipping drums in the MPC. And yes, the stereo outs work just fine, as long as your mix is fairly balanced.

KZbin read my mind thinking how I wish I still had my 3k. Definitely agree with you on having that extra control through your mix. Also having your sounds run through an analog signal path is going to give another round of depth that the converters already offer in the 3. Have fun with all that gear and push it to the limit please. Lastly I want to add that I miss the lost art of digging for samples. It was a long and arduous process but it was so beautiful and only furthered my love for all kinds of music.

So much about this. I came sideways into production from DJing so I already had an Allen and Heath Xone 96. Super modern DJ mixer, 4 channels w 4 band eq (+2 return channels), 2 killer filters w distortion, and connected to my MPC One via USB. That way I’m using the higher quality DACs of the mixer, and access to some great sound shaping and tactile performance options. Recently added an elektron analog heat into the mix and slowly learning how to add that texture.

Fantastic video about exploring beyond limitations. I haven't tried the 8 outs on my 2000xl yet but plan on doing so as some samples carry too much bass where I/O mix makes management of the sound easier. I have used Stereo Out for so long that it feels normal. Definitely gonna get another mixer to replace my defunct Alto ZMX862 and likely add a compressor of some sort. It all comes down to how the samples are flipped, layered, and pieced together by the end user transform bits from many places into a new piece in the workspace. Keep up the knowledge!!
@eddieleonard6925
@eddieleonard6925 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for checking this out. Not all 2000xl's have the 8 out expansion, so you're lucky to have that added flexibility. The stereo outs actually sound great on that machine in particular, but depending on the compressor you use, I agree that having more control over bass and general stereo separation should do your music good. And yes, it's all about the mind, not the machine. Cheers,

Dope video and commentary! So far I’ve just used the stereo outs on any of the MPCs I’ve experimented with. I primarily used the Roland/Boss SP series of samplers as effects boxes to add texture to the sound (such as compression or the nice vinyl sim effects). Good points about the 8-outs allowing more flexibility in experimentation and sound design. Gotta try it soon (I don’t have an 8-channel mixer at this point). Nice work

Thanks, bro! The stereo outs have a magic of their own, but imagine this: running outs 1 & 2 into an SP OG, then outputs 3 & 4 into a 303, and outs 5 & 6 into the new SP....then you could rock 3 sets of stereo effects on a single beat. We might have to collab on that...could make some interesting textures.

Hello Eddie, thank you for your knowledge. For my part I used the 8 direct outs for years and today I stopped, and I work with the stereo hands outs. I was wasting too much time mixing and adjusting compressors and effects. Today I work in the opposite direction, that is to say that I sample and I work on my beat I use a channel or two of the direct outs, to equalize or modify and process a sound, and I resample it in the 3000. because the mix is saved in the machine with the sequence, which allows me to work on other beats, without having to mess up the mix in hardware. I use a daw for assembly as well as effects and compressors. I spent too many nights on the 3000 in song mode, I use a dawn in addition to the 3000 for editing. my work and on a Mpc 3000 and an asr 10. i make my beat, i use 1 or 2 out outputs to modify the sound and i resample it for everyone to have in the 3000, the internal mixer is really good. I'm like you at first, I swore only by the hardware vinyls and tapes, but we must admit that the qualitative subtlety is really too subtle for ordinary mortals. Hello from France Mika.

100 % agree on your point to sound treatment. Artists like James Blake hardly use samples and spend the bulk of their energy in sound design, sculpture and separation. Make each sound its own shining light but still sitting with the whole. Loving what you put out here as I just blew $730 AUD on an 8 out for my MPC 4000 and it hurts.

I'm glad this approach resonates with you. That's a lot of money for 8 outs, but the flexibility is WORTH IT! I've been doing all types of creative routing with 8 outs lately, sometimes sending the same sample through two different outs to layer and apply more effects. It takes theses machines to a new level.

Defiantly control. I wish modern samplers like the octatrack had individual track outs, would make mixing much more efficient. if you make a mistake whilst recording in stereo you can’t remove it amongst the other layers in the arrangement. Absolutely agree about flipping and treatment being important too. Excellent content and beat crafting.

Thanks for checking this out. There's nothing wrong with devices that sum internally to stereo outs, but it would be a game changer if they had individuals outs. I've never used an octatrack, but i imagine it must have great internal mixing, and is more portable than a giant MPC.

If you are doing multitrack recording, you can synchronize the MPC to your recording. Then you use the 8 outs to add more tracks to your mix, so you don’t have to use up audio tracks. If you are using an analog recorder, you just print MIDI code to one channel of your tape. It requires an extra box, but it’s cheap. You give up one recorded track, but you gain 10 sequence tracks. If you have different instruments, like a bass, and piano, you might want to mix those separately from the drum beat. I got the 8 outs for my 2000xl mainly because that expansion board also has the digital in out

Great video, I personally liked the sound of the stereo outs in this test, but you are right, exporting to mixer gives you more control…on the way out.. although, the same can be said if you stem it out and open in DAW and then pan etc.. so end of the day, it’s all about what workflow you feel most comfortable with…you can achieve the same results doing things either way.. just do what you like.. is how I feel..I subbed, nice channel

This is a great video. I agree with everything you said. I'm telling you back in the 90s every piece for me had to either be put on layaway or bought from a homie (ASR10, MPC, etc). Very expensive then. Now thanks to the computer and easy financing, a person with no musical interest can create an entire album (my opinion). The sound and sonics is important and I'm glad you mentioned that. Everything that is mainstream to me sounds the same. That is not good in my book 📚

Well said. Anyone can create an entire album, as long as they know what they're doing with the equipment they have. I'm still learning equipment I've owned for years. You're spot on about how everything in the mainstream sounds the same. It might be because everyone's using the same instruments in the same daws, and processing their sounds in the same way, rather than taking the time to develop a more nuanced sound.

If he is passionate about something that could certainly land him in the middle class then seek out experts such as a community college professor. I had this teacher who yelled at other students & I in the mid 1990s for getting the lesson completed in a computer lab. The other kids struggled login into the computer network while I was following the instructions on the whiteboard. We were using a thinkpad cart. The teacher should have encouraged the parents to push students to try some computer programing courses with computer languages tailored for small children. Today we have Khan Academy so if your kid is a brilliant mathematician he or she could push themselves such as algebra in the 4th grade when the other kids struggle with their multiplication table. Speaking of gear I'm sorta thinking about getting into photography as a new hobby because I'm discovering that there is so much cool gear out there. Congrats on getting an mpc one. With that machine, you can do everything within the box and it'll sound great. Devices now have "usb audio" which allows you to route your sounds into a computer without needing 8 analog outs. It may depend on the audio interface you use. That's a much cleaner, streamlined set up that still gives you control. Grabbing a mixer is just a more tactile way of achieving the same results. Tascam's new line of analog mixers might be a good best-of-both-worlds. Hope this helps. enjoy that mpc one!
