As an electronic engineer I have to disagree with you. We put input protections on our hardware to protect against all reasonable inputs/outputs to a circuit. The PD hubs are only damaging Macs and not PCs so it is reasonable to assume apple did something wrong. Telling people it is 3rd party hubs is just like telling people they are holding the iPhone wrong.

well you can think as you wish but iam not just a certified apple tech but also PC as well have been for over 30 years apple and over 28 years pc and I have seen unpowered hubs also take out pcs USB ports as well care to add more its also a well known fact the engineers don't always get things right either had that experience as well many times having to correct what was wrong with someones else's blunders

Yup they don’t even have a dock on the site the dock/dongle I bought was from their website it’s a 3rd party I think it was something to do with fast charger and thunderbolt cable being too much for it and had to fry something on the power rail bc it’s not reading any volts at all but the dongle and charger still did

I was actually searching for hubs online and the powered type "seemed better" to me as I'm always been careful about attaching too many plugs into an electrical hub. So, thanks, confirmed my suspicion and now quite relaxed about having to choose the right power hub for the very "essential" Macair M1. Btw, my 2013 Macair is still going strong.

Hey fantastic video. Just a clarifying question (kind of a dumb one). When you say "Powered hub" does that mean it's powdered from a wall adapter, while a "Non-powered" hub is powdered from the computer? Also if a goal is to plug the MacBook into a monitor, do you recommend just getting a USB C - HDMI cable instead of a hub that includes an HDMI port? Are there any powered hubs you reccomend? Thanks!

The bottom line is, If Apple are going to be selling Lap-Flops with only 2 ports, the least they could do is manufacture their own dongles. They'd make a lot money from them anyway so they have nothing to lose. I would definitely trust a Mac dongle for my mac computer. And honestly, your reason for Apple not advising us about this situation is rediculous tbh.
@KevinMillard68

apple sells you the computer they don't put warrnings on computers stating only use a powered hub that can supply the required power for your needs other wise you will blow your computer sorry dude no one does that.. this is time tested with all the results showing that when not using a powered hub you will cook stuff also keep in mind these ports own power output are made for low draw devices so using devices that exceed even the onboard amperage you have per port will still cook them even with out a hub.. and apple does have a lot of their own dongles how ever even if they made the ones you want you still think you can get away with loading it up ummm nope you won't.. People need to start treating these things like their plug sockets at home. Everyone knows if you attach too many home appliances into the same adapter, you'll end up getting a power outage. (We've all seen that really reckless thing where someone's plugged an adapter _into another adapter_ , expecting to operate 7 or 8 appliances from a single wall socket.)

Could you please help me to understand if I could use for example a Satechi 7 hub, to connect a small interface connecting to it my guitar and a condenser microphone (with phantom power) and the HDMI at to it at the same time? Using Logic to record music on my new MacAir M1? I just bought the computer and now cannot use the USB ports and HDMI, because I'm afraid of destroying it with the wrong kind of hub. if you want to hook all that stuff up at the same time you need a powered hub that or use both ports on the air to get your hookups going and run the computer on battery power there are also small powered hubs like aplomb i think its called its on my channel and you can power it from your macbooks charger and this would give you HDMI as well as 3 usb A ports and 2 car reader ports to .. you wll need to upgrade the power supply for your air tho if you want all that hooked in at same time

Thanks for the info. I’d appreciate your advice on my situation. I have a MacBook Pro (2020 version, not M1) with 2 thunderbolt ports. What I previously had working was an Apple power adapter in one port, with a thunderbolt charging connector and a USB connection to my monitor’s own USB devices (my mouse, keyboard, etc.). In the other thunderbolt port, I had just the monitor’s USB-C display connection. This was working, until I believe I bricked it from switching out the adapter to an off-brand one (I believe the exact same one that’s in your video) and connecting more things to it. What I know works: the closest of the two thunderbolt ports (with my charger connector, the USB-C display connector on its own, the Apple adapter hooked up only to the charger connector). However, this doesn’t work anymore: having the USB-C dsplay connector in the further thunderbolt port, with my charger in the closer one together (not even with the apple adapter like before). I’ve learned from the video that I should just have my charger connector directly into one thunderbolt port. With the other one, I need to connect my USB-C display connector and my USB connector to my monitor’s devices. What type of hub should I get to do that with? I’m willing to get a more costly powered one, but can I connect a USB-C and regular USB into that?

Thank you for the insightful content, it convinced me to buy a powered ORICO dock. Now I realize that it has a power supply with only 65W output yet it has an upstream TB port with 60W charging and a downstream port with 15W output. Those numbers just don't add up and that is not counting all the other ports. Could this be bad for my M1 Macbook Air, or will it just deliver less amps to charge it?
@KevinMillard68
@KevinMillard68 Жыл бұрын
you dont use your dock to charge your macbook use its own charger for charing and use the power supply for the dock to power the dock as the mac does not have the power to run all that stuff properly which is why we need powered docks with their own power supplys for the docks

@@KevinMillard68 I checked and the dock turns off when I disconnect the power supply, so the mac never powers the dock through the TB port (unlike hubs with PD) so it should be safe. For the mac at least.

Love your explanation. I have questions. I was a Windows laptop user, but now I just change my Windows to MacBook Pro M1 16" 2021. Is that okay if I use an unpowered USB hub for my HDD external USB 3.0? For sure, I won't charge my MacBook through the hub. I only use the hub to access my external hard disk. Since I love to travel, I think the powered USB hub is not convenient to bring. Or do you have any suggestions? Is it better to buy the adapter instead than the hub?

if all your going to use is just and external drive i dont see why you would even consider a hub all you need is a type A to usbc adapter to use and external HDD personaly i would just buy an external type C SSD now there is a trick with using adapters to convert it becomes directional dependent other wise the drive with either not mount or it will be really slow and youll hear a weird noice comming from your speakers that happen then just flip the plug around at the usb C end of the adapter , with reugal USB C cable comming from a usb C SSD you will not have the to deal with its plug and go and either direction plus SSDs are way faster then HDD Drives

you can. use any usb hub you want but you need to know what the total current or amp draw is of what your plugging in each item sub divades the amps so if your hardrive is mechanical and it draws 1.2 amps then you have about 1.3 amp total left from your port now using a hub the hub it self draws very little but must be counted as well then you plug in your usb mouse so you need to know the current draw of that item as well ,, and soon ,, with a powered hub you have alot more options and alot more stuff you can plug in all at the same time,, i can not give you solid answers to whats best for you but a sata ssd drive and a mouse and nothing else should not be a problem even with a non powered hub , my sudgestion is this get your self a bluetooth mouse instead if the usb one, as for the hardrives i reccomend only sata ssd drives because even tho they do use the same volts they use far less amp draw even in larger size drives they wont chew up alot of amperage mechanicial drives tho suck uo alot of amperage as do different brands of usb sticks even in the same size ...

there is a yes and no to that some ssd drives even require 1.6 amps to run stable and i have one that unless it gets at least 900 mah it wont stay stable and type A ports only give you 500 Mah so not stable unless you now use a typoe C cable type c and thunder bolt give you 900 mah even with the bare min your still going to see these devices run hot .. Nvme drives use over 2 amps at the starting of the smaller drives this again gives problems on type C they can run sorta stable at least they stay mounted but the temps are very high even sitting there doing nothing again problems all around ,, i really think the companies that make our stuff need to find ways of lessing the power draw and still giving us speed i have also talked in videos abotu my WD External ssd that is rated for 1150 read and 1000 write and it runs rather toasty and i get under 800 with it and it should do more but it cant as its not getting the power it needs so that makes for a new set of problems there as well there is alot to this stuff that many people just dont get and no matter how many times i try and help very few still get it but i do the best i can to help people so they dont blow there stuff up I tell the truth unlike the manufactors that lie to us all. the time and when many belive the lie its hard to get them to see the truth..

This is not really apple or pc problem but rather texas instrument issue, cant say any other is better. In most cases i fix, cd3215/3217 is being killed by charger or waterdamage which sends 20v to CC pin. Some mac models had quite good system called in schematics "save CC", but it was ommited since 5 years. To provide 5v output macs use dedicated 5v power supply which i seen maybe failed only once and it was rather waterdamage issue. TPS6598 or cd3215 does not provide any output by itself, it simply passes through 5v reg if needed. Same is for cd3217(basically same chip with integrated fets and less LDOs around). So getting any amount of current till shutdown should not really damage PD controller which is what fails in macs quite often. Well, in any usbc powered notebooks. Accourding to my tickets with approx 400 macs a year, i had 5v reg issue 2 times last year compared to roighly 1/3 charging circuit issues with burned PD controller.

@@KevinMillard68 no need to be rude for no reason. i fix macbooks for living and i just shared my experience based on hundreds of macs i fixed in last couple of years. i seen only one mac with confirmed USB 5v Regulator short which caused machine malfunctioning and one with the bad output but functional machine. The most common failure on Macbooks is charging issue caused by one or multiple dead cd3215/17s on board. This often attributed to the "bad third party hub", however lack of Mah can't possibly cause any issue with CD3215/CD3217 since both are just doing pass-through in output mode. Also on 4TBT machines 5V output for hubs and etc is provided by separate voltage regulator, for example, on Intel 16" that would be 2 voltage regs with insane 10amps per side. Small 2 port macs reuse 5v/3V reg for USB output with also pretty high nominal output (around 6A). there might be a possible correlation between using external hubs and VCCIO(GAY-GAV) chip failure, but it only happens on devices with one particular revision of ISL95870 with chip markings "GAY", and never on another.

@@KevinMillard68 Thx, I have a Ugreen 9 in 1 hub with a separate 96W Apple USB-c charger plugged into it's usb-c power through port. The laptop gets charged via the hub's built in usb-c power / data cable. So while power is going into and charging the laptop, the same connection carries data to and from laptop and peripherals connected to the hub. So far I have an audio interface, mouse and keyboard connected to the hub. I have a separate laptop usb-c port connected to and external monitor displayport. (found that used less power than using the hub's HDMI port) Things do get fairly warm, but not hot. My next decision is what kind of external mass storage unit to connect to the hub - SSD, Cased NVME or Flash Drive.

Best Buy fired me because I wouldn’t sell their shitty $100 laptops to people looking for a long term workhorse. They’d say “I need a laptop for a bachelors in engineering” or design or whatever and I would point them to a nice laptop that would last through college and have the perfect specs only for another employee to come up behind me, steal the sale, and hook them up with a celeron or pentium laptop with 2-4gb of RAM and a 256gb HDD. I also wouldn’t push their ripoff of geek squad and tech plans on people because it was garbage. The people selling shit never even knew what it was. My first day of training, they asked me to explain what all the components were and what they did, and then told me I was wrong because RAM and Hard Drive speed and size don’t matter. But somehow I’m the person at Best Buy that needs to be fired.

I like your prompt reply Well, I have a question that I didn't understand about your explanation. But if you're going to answer me, please use a simple language that I can translate because I'm not English. The important thing I understood from your explanation that each device has a specific amount of amps that comes out of it. And I should not reach more than what my implementer can bear because there is no imperate distributor in these pieces. Well then how can I calculate this thing? First, I have to know the amperty of my device's input. And I think it's the easiest thing to know. But the difficult thing is that I use other devices that are not famous or non-universal. So how can I know how much ampere you take? Does this depend on the accuracy of the transmission? For example, I have a screen and I want to move quickly. 4k, 30hz Or 1080p,60hz If I search for the amps consumed by this resolution from the transfer to the screen? Does that mean I'm safe now? I'm sorry for this question. I don't think it's the best question, but when I heard that the device might die because of this cat, I got scared. Because I'm not rich to buy a phone every day. By the way, I use two devices poco f4 and realme 11 pro plus. I don't know if this information will help you answer my question. I hope I didn't bother you with a lot of my words 😅❤️

i have no idea what kind of amperage the screen would draw and the htz makes no difference in that how ever you need a powered up Period when plugging in more then 1 device and you still cant plug in a buch of stuff at once ,, lest say you have 4 ports on a hub and the powersupply you have is 3 amps then you get no more then 750 amps per port if all 4 are in use each port will only have 750 mha only you need 900 for type C and for Type A 3.0 to 3.2 devices tho some of these devices really need alot more then that they will run on 900 mah but if you cant feed them at least the 900 mha then the device will not be stable on the system and plugging in tomany things at once again steals more amps and if you can not give it then it cant stay stable , i guess ill need to do another video to explain this further

I think u mean, people should use hub with only a few features. If people use all sockets of the hub by the same time, the mac will be get damaged even if u didnt charge your M1 Air with hub. what iam saying is you need to use a hub that uses its own seperate power supply to give it power for its ports because there is not enough power from the computer to run more then 1 item per port on said computer so when you use a hub that does not have its own spereate power supply to supply proper power to all the ports on it you will in time short or long blow your USB port on your computer that its pluged into unless it has its own seperate power supply

Let me dumb this down to for you, you know Jack about what you're talking about. Here let me explain M1 Macbooks shouldn't be dying because of power requests by USB devices, regardless of what the power demands are. Apple have either not followed spec ( highly likey ) or people are trying to charge via a cheap hub thats pushing 60w+ through a hub that is also not following spec, possibly resulting in hub overheating and potentisl shorting maybe voltage down a data wire. But in either case Apple decided on USB PD they should have made sure protections was in place. Then I suppose the Spec itself is getting stupid 240w PD physically so close to data 🤷🏻‍♂️ what could go wrong. in either case HDMI spec 50 to 300mA but maybe i need yo read the title

Hello, I have 3 hubs from Baseus, with usb-c input connection and USB-PD power connection. At the moment I'm using 2 hubs for small devices connected to desktop computer's USB 3.0 ports via usb-a male usb-c female adapters. I need them to connect an external hd but I fear the lack of power or overload on the computer's usb-a port. At the same time, I avoid using the usb-c PD input because it feeds the input cable for laptops. There is no description of use by the manufacturer and their report in the video describes their current policy well. The manuals indicate that the hub has 2 modes of operation, powered and unpowered, even turning off the ports while transitioning. Is it possible to use the PD input to power the hub without risk of overload or power conflict on the desktop computer's usb-A port? As far as I know the computer's USB-A port is usb 3.0 protocol and it is not compatible with USB-PD. My goal is to feed only the HUB to satisfy the 4 USB 3.0 ports it has, I'll send you the model link. www.baseus.com/products/joystar-8-in-1-usb-c-hub Thanks for this video! Very good information.

desk tops and laptop are not really the same thing comptley how ever i only use powered hubs on both for the simple reason that one port can now power a pile of stuff but a power hub does not use the computers power from its port only the data lines are used so you need to make sure tha the powered hub has enough amperage to supply power to all connections ponts properly other wise either way you can get into trouble

@@KevinMillard68 This hub has a USB-C input that, according to the specification on the baseus website, can receive 5v 3A in addition to the higher voltage modes of the USB-PD. The output is 0.9A per port, total 4, 3.6 A total output. At the moment I only use them powered by the USB-A port of the desktop through usb-a-to-usb-c adapters, which limits me to a use of 0.9A for the 4 ports. My questions are: 1 - Is there a risk that the hub, when powered by the PD input, sends energy to the computer operating as a host in the connection? 2 - Do the desktop USB-A ports limit the output current to the 0.9 A of usb 3.0 in case of device overload?
