I bought a Mokin hub (universal, i.e, both C and A) and while some of the ports work (with the Windows-based Chuwi Ubook I bought it for. Don't use a hub with my iPad....since I don't really need one), not all of them do.

If you like the McDodo hub but don't like the gap, why don't you just fix the gap with some cheap solution? You just want it to be stable right? It doesn't have to be a high tech fix or even aesthetically pretty unless you're OCD. Try shaving down a scrap piece of rubber or plastic and just glue it onto the outer ends of the dongle so it won't rock. You could also probably just use some type of wood putty, or Elmer's glue, or epoxy resin, or household gap/crack/wall sealer (comes out as a putty that then dries & sets hard) to fill in the gap...then use sandpaper/nail file to sand it down to the right height. (and no, I'm not talking about gluing the dongle to your iPad. I'm talking about using the glue or putty to fill in the gap... level out the dongle so it sits flush.)

@@GaryR55 for whatever reason my reply to Jacob won’t work, so Gary I need to borrow yours, lol. Okay I bought a Behringer IPad Istudio for a hundred bucks brand new. I used a female 30 pin to usb A adapter to my 2017 iPad Pro and it worked. So now I have a brand new m2 12.9 and haven’t tried it, I’ll need to use another USB c adapter but if it works, I’ll let you know. Way better than a hub but I connected a hub to it as well and it work great. Give me a day or two and I’ll let you know. In the mean time look for these Istudios, they didn’t sell very well and are still out there!

I’ve exclusively used the Hyperdrive 6-in-1 dongle (the 60Hrz 4K HDMI one) and have had mostly little issues. However i did have to return the first one for an issue where the microphone on the headphone jack would malfunction and I’d loose mic capabilities mid-game on Call of Duty and would have to reload the whole game and reconnect to server to initiate mic properly again. Once they sent a replacement unit it has worked flawlesslly for the last two years. One good thing about it is that it comes with a cable extension you can mount onto the dongle with screws to eliminate the somewhat weird connection method of the dongle sitting flush against the iPad. Despite being more compact that way, there was too much chance of damage or total disconnection of everything mid-jam by bumping the dongle. And when it plugged into the iPad in that “flush to unit” method it was a little mushy. With the extension cable bolted onto the dongle it would have the Apple-brand type satisfying “click/snap” feeling when connecting to iPad. So from my experience I’d recommend this unit, perhaps the brand. I only say perhaps as ive only had one product from them so can’t say more outside of this one experience.

Thank you for this video! I watched my hub not work on one iPad and slowly stop working on another, but couldn’t find that many others shared my experience. It’s frustrating feeling like these issues don’t appear on MacBooks or PCs. I’m hoping an extender will fix my issues because the cheap Amazon couplers I found did little to nothing. I also would like to point out that it is common that such adapters only work one way and you are advised to rotate them to get them to send data. So much for the simplicity of USB-C.

I absolutely love the OWC Thunderbolt 4 dock (I suppose it's a bit too big to be considered a hub?). I use the OWC Thunderbolt 4 dock with both my M1 iPad Pro and also my 2018 iPad Pro, and also my M1 MacBook Pro (16"). Only downside is it's a bit bigger than those small portable hubs that you are showing in your demo ... so might not be as portable if you're using it for travel. But other than that, I would highly recommend the OWC Th. 4 dock (not to be confused with the OWC Thunderbolt 3 dock).

The Hubble case (with built in hub) has worked well for me. It has all the ports you mentioned plus no dongling. Since the case supports the weight of the hub it seems to put less stress on the iPad’s port. But of course there are a few issues: 1. Hubble currently only has a couple sizes, so there may not be one for your iPad 2. Since the hub is always attached it will drain your battery, but there is an off switch if you remember to turn it off 3. The headphone jack is trrs which means I can’t use my nice headphones without another adapter or…dongle 😩 The case itself is pretty decent, I just wish it had a flap that protected the pencil. Overall I love it, it’s still going strong for almost a year and I never have to worry looking for a hub.

Thanks for the video. I have ben searching unsuccessfully for a USB hub to plug in a wired MIDI keyboard and have a 3.5 mm headphone jack on my 2019 iPad Pro. I have a great portable MIDI keyboard (an Alesis QMini) that works fine directly plugged into the iPad…but not with any hub I’ve used. My current multiport hub works FINE with the MIDI keyboard on my MacBook Pro with Logic or Garage Band…no love for the iPad, though. SO annoying…if Apple would just add a second USB-C port on the ipad it would solve a lot of these problems. Because the hub & keyboard work fine on the MacBook, I'm conclucing it’s a hardware issue, even though I’ve seen videos of others doing exactly this with their iPads. My only successful solution is to use a Bluetooth MDID adapter, but this itself requires a separate power adapter. What a PITA!

Like you I have tried many solutions and most of them failed on one thing or another. One from UGreen actually fried my iPad's USB port and I could no longer charge the iPad. Fortunately, Apple were sympathetic and replaced the iPad. I now use Apple's Magic keyboard which adds an extra USB C port to the iPad Pro. This means that I can charge the iPad Pro from the port in the keyboard and use another hub on the iPads USB port without having to worry about charging. Having said that, the hub I now use has given me no issues whatsoever. It is an ACASIS USB C hub with SSD Enclosure. It has 2 USB A ports, a USB C Port, SD Card slot ,HDMI and Ethernet ports Plus a PD USB C port. It has all the ports I will ever need, plus it takes a standard SSD drive so can be used to expand the iPads storage capacity.

Thanks for an absolutely awesome video! This may seem like a strange thing to say, as you have failed to find the USB-C audio/MIDI Nirvana that many of us may have thought existed. But it simply doesn't, and your video both confirms this, and suggests some of the best options. For what it's worth, I use the 4-USB-A-plus-charging Lention adapter/hub (Amazon, I think). As I work live, I use a good quality short USB-C extension (0.3m!) and audio is through an interface (actually a vocal harmonizer, with USB mini!). I've got a backup option if everything falls, but it's not great. Let's hope the manufacturers catch up with Jakob Haq! Thanks for what you do buddy 👍😎

Hi Jacob! Apple now make a USB-C Digital AV Adapter that has pass-through charging, USB-A and HDMI so this should have you covered! You may still need Bluetooth for your MIDI Keyboards however. I’ve been shopping around for and researching a decent hub for my own 6th-Gen iPad Pro because I have some gear including a Arturia Minifuse thats compatible too, only I have no way of being able to charge my iPad at the same time at the moment. Yes you’re on to something however, you’re not entirely correct about the Apple wall warts. But you’re touching upon the right topic. Power! You see an Apple adapter does indeed charge but one must make sure to have a high enough wattage rating for the entire system/setup. A lot of people miss that. An 18W adapter can charge through PD and run an external SSD plus a midi controller that doesn’t have a lot of lights on it. So yes, the adapter must be able to provide not just the charge for the iPad, but also enough power to whatever usb gear that is connected to the hub as well. I’ve used Apple chargers to charge without problem and it hasn’t been an issue for me. My main issue has been, as I pointed out in the video, that the connector and or cables on the hub wear out and break, effectively making the entire hub useless. It’s not just data or charge that stops working, it’s that nothing at all works because the connection is lost due to a faulty connector. I have now made a video in were I’m showing a hub that might have solved this common problem. I also clarify a lot of things and bring up power etc. Have a look: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rGK3p6CwaJqChaM

@sleekitwan
@sleekitwan Жыл бұрын
[EDIT: Sorry, I just got to @3:50 where you talk about the USB-C of Anker not ‘snapping’ into place. The certainty I can offer, is that on my device (see later) there is a ThunderBolt 3 port…it’s identical-looking to a USB-C port, but is FRACTIONALLY different in dimensions. It is possible, even if your Apple iPad is sold as having a USB connector, that Apple hedged their bets, fitting a TB3 socket, but only deciding later on to enable USB-C speeds/functionality? This leaves them with the option of what to do, not constrained by hardware, but leaves some slop when the ‘other’ very similar design of connector is fitted. I looked into all this in far too much detail!] Good…tagging this to watch in a minute, I have this exact experience? Up-front I chose the massively recommended one, then ended up with a ‘universal’ approach, an Anker USB3 multi-socket one, THEN finally gave in to the Apple iPad Pro M1 scenario they obviously had in mind when they left us with just one USB-C/TB3 port. So I ended up with a used Belkin HD Express Dock - this is my ‘hub central’ from which my Anker USB3 sprouts, and takes my keyboard, giving not much latency. The Belkin MUST be the specific one - it’s the F4U095 one, not any other, they are often used by Mac users. I do not possess a Mac, only iOS devices, my trusty (rusty?) iphone SE and the iPad Pro M1. (There are 093, etc etc, don’t get one of those.) Mobile it’s not! But I have the well-recommended one, the corner one, the BaseUs, but it is SLOW…the latency is apalling for my keyboard, can’t stand it. The TB3 Belkin, the Anker attached to it, thence to the Novation Launchkey 61, that whole palaver is LESS LATENCY than the so-called 5Gbps BaseUs hub - so there’s a bit of something else going on there…finally, Apple have not made the TB3 go the full 40Gbps. It’s been measured by somebody as only (!) 20Gbps. But, fast enough for my uses, but notice Apple STILL advertise the ipad pro M1 as a 40Gbps port!

The reason why it “disconnects” the sound interface when you plug your headphones into the hub, is because iOS does not support aggregate devices. It can only run 1 set of inputs and outputs at a time. When you connect your headphones to the hubs headphone Jack you are activating the built In sound-device. iOS detects that as a new interface, disconnects the previous one and gives access to the one in the hub. You’ll get this behaviour with most hubs that have a headphone port.

Oh I;m not so religious but Thank God Somebody made a video about this. I was exasperated seeing no hint of a solution and just to hear someone talking about it it super it almost doesn't matter if it was complete foolishness. Just to hear talk of it is flipping therapeutic. The video is good though did I mention thanks.

There is one USB-C to USB-A, USB-C Power and HDMI from Apple. The one I ended up finally.
@PiersCawley
@PiersCawley Жыл бұрын
It's a good bit of kit, but it's damned pricy, and I found it temperamental as an HDMI port - it kept dropping and reconnecting, which wouldn't have been so bad if the HDMI connection didn't also steal the audio from my audio interface. In the end I find that if I want it to be reasonably reliable as an HDMI interface, I have to power cycle the iPad. It's way more reliable if you don't want HDMI out though.
@Robsi60

@@PiersCawley I bought it because of 16.1 Beta and the second screen. All other hubs I have failed and even worse, the full support of a second screen has been postponed by Apple.

@@Robsi60 I've certainly found it to be more robust under iPadOS 16 and 16.1 than it was under 15, but it will insist on turning off mirroring, which is emphatically NOT what I want it to do. Hence the rebooting. iPadOS is a nightmare when it comes to this kind of thing still, I'm very much looking forward to the day that Loopy HD works on a Mac.

Hey Jakob. Another great review. I also agree Apple should produce a usb-c cable similar to the lightning cable. After trying many different hubs to which you are absolutely right, I settled with the ACASIS 10 in 1 USB C hub. It literally has everything including storage up to 8TB. Up to 100w charging port. Standard and mini SD card reader, Internet port, headphone port, 2 usb A and a usb c port. No it’s not cheap and there are others similar to this one. My main objective was stability and a piece of mind when it comes to connecting. Good luck with your search.

But I’m still struggling with the lack of connectivity options. Ideally I would use my ipad (ios music apps) at the same time with my powerbook (Ableton) and various (non-bluetooth) midi controllers. Still searching for a solution. Thought about the iConnectivity Audio 4c. But that is a pretty expensive solution and a limited device

I got a HyperDrive 6 port hub back when there were many fewer options. It was a little rocky at the start, but Hyper was pretty quick to address the issues. It can attach directly to your iPad and also includes a bolt-on USB-C cable adapter if you prefer that option. I’ve had it for a couple of years and have no complaints, though I don’t use it on a daily basis.

There is the Apple USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter... which is USB-A, HDMI, and power delivery. I got one for my work laptop. If only it had headphone jack. I find myself using the magic keyboard as a way to charge my ipad but thats not convenient for making music sometimes, but I just leave it on the thing a lot because there is no good solution. Why not make something with the magnets or something that is a case with ports or something else like that?

I now Use a PULWTOP Docking Station, 12-in-1 USB C Hub with Detachable Non-Slip Base, 3 USB 3.0 Port 4K HDMI, VGA, SD/TF Card Reader, 1 Gbps Ethernet ,100W PD Port, Usb Hub its bulky but the main benefit is the fact it isn’t a dongle , you can plug any length of cable into it and so the chance of failure is lowered by it not having a dedicated usb c connector, seems a solid build and has thus far lasted over a year with no issues , I use it with a tascam model 12 as an interface and various plug in controllers and also with an extra usb hub, can’t wait for iPadOS 16 so i can use an external monitor for some double screen action !!!

This video was a great help. I’m thinking a short usb-c male to female cable could solve your issue with the Anker hub. If it fits the anchor hub nicely. I really like that design too but I also have a cover on my iPad. I think I’ll be looking for a high-quality USB-C thunderbolt cable.

Research a connectors insertions ratings , it rates the number of times you can reliably connect a device in a given port, many have very low insertions ratings, could be that the port on your iPad is part of the issue, also using a connection that rocks back and forth, for an extended period, will reduce the number of reliable insertions because it loosens the connections internally, both the male and the female part of the connector play a part, when you purchased a new hub, you had a new connector on the hub, that new connector made a good enough connection but after it loosened you were bact the the same problem. If all else fails you can have the port replaced on your iPad and that may be what you need at this point.

Hi Jakob, For my PC gaming system, I plan on plugging up a USB headset with microphone, USB keyboard that is equipted with a USB Passthrough, USB Racing Wheel, and a PC controller. Do you think a USB 3.0 Hub will be able to provide adequate power for all of those devices or should I consider a USB-C Hub?

I just wanted to comment on you saying that you can use a larger adapter with a 100W rated PD port. That's factually wrong. With PD the charging voltage is negotiated between the PD port and the adapter, so the PD port will request a lower voltage from the power adapter than what it can deliver if the power adapter is capable of delivering more power than the PD port can handle. So you can use any adapter with any USB hub and the lowest rated will determine the max charging power. After reading my message I realize you might have meant that that hub can utilize the power from a higher rated adapter, but I will leave my comment for clarification.

Buy the Magic Keyboard. Plug USB-C power delivery into the left end of the hinge. That lets your iPad charge while keeping its USB port open for other uses. Boom! Problem solved.
