Earlier this year Tim Paisley had the opportunity to meet and film a conversation with Chris Yates which includes a thrilling description of his capture of the record carp from Redmire in June 1980. For fans of carping history this is not to be missed.

What an absolute Gentleman. Like many, I grew up on the compelling stories of Chris Yates who got me into fishing. Now I have the ultimate privilege of passing the knowledge down to my two boys.

"Casting at the Sun" was my favourite book as a kid. Had to read a passage or two aloud for an English class project and my teacher and many of the kids loved it. Then came "A Passion for Angling" and Chris cemented a place in my heart forever. A gentleman, an enigma and a hero. Thank you, Sir.

I remember when the photo was first published, think it was Anglers Mail ? I was 14 years old and stuck it on my bedroom wall, would stare at it for hours, Chris & Rod are the reason I’m still doing it today, superb 👌🏻

I'm a mate of Paul Gummers. He introduce me to carp fishing. Told me all about fishing at Redmire and your enormous carp. I read your book Casting at the Sun. I like the bit about ghosts.

Chris and Tim have been a massive influence on my angling. I love chats like this between members of the old guard. I feel they are, or will become important documents. It was a different world and a lifetime away from all the technology and bankside comforts that we enjoy today.

His books were such an inspiration. I remember watching a passion for angling while on a camping trip in Cornwall as a kid. It had a lasting impact. Also met chris at the NEC in Birmingham. He had time for me and was amazing to meet the legend!

Wonderful, thanks for putting this on the record. One of the few things I like about modern carping is how it has revealed the potential maximum growth of carp, so these mythical monsters of redmire (50, 60 nay 100 lbers as big as a man!) were just a bit ahead of their time.

Thank you very much for this. I haven't been carp fishing for 30 years, wildlife photography and natural history takes up too much time. But it was an important part of my life, which I will never forget. I never met Chris, although I did know people who knew him. I have met Tim, but he would never remember me, because I was a nobody. Actually, I was fishing Berth Pool, when he was fishing the Mangrove, and I knew about Pinky and Perky in Erewhon, 40 year ago. I used the names that I think Tim invented, because I don't know what the current status is.

Facinating hearing about the ‘King’ as well. And that might be the fish Eddie Price photographed in 1958 which was said to be around 70lb Still quite a young fish at 24/25 years old in 1958.

Chris's map shows the ghost, but I've only heard of his account in passing. Others claim to have heard strange things at Redmire, it would be good to hear Chris's own account.
