Hi Joe, thanks for this, I'm just retired and now finally have the time to please myself, bought some gear and am now launching my small boat into the great ocean. Your post is a good starting place.

Joe, I've had a home studio for years, starting out with multitrack tape decks and then onto DAW recording. Since I am self taught, I've picked up some bad habits, or better yet, not picked up good habits along the way. You're KZbin channel is most helpful in getting on track to solid multitrack recording. Just wanted to say thanks! 👍

You're one of the few ways most of us can actually get good information on things like production and recording so I'd love to see more like this! The basics may seem simple but without you and Graham taking the time to share them I wouldn't even know where to start. Keep it up!

I feel I should just say thank you as I just set up my own home studio and you were a great help in explaining what I need, what options I have and how to get things set up. Very few places online have a comprehensive compilation of all this info that'll help get a beginner started and make him more informed, FOR FREE. I found your website online and now your KZbin channel and it's been an answer to prayer. So thank you very much for taking the time to make these very informative/comprehensive videos and blogs and make them free and accessible on the internet. I know how herculean this task must be so thank you very much for taking up the challenge. The world needs more people like you.

Joe Gilder Music it's funny you'd say that cos I saw people talking about him in the comments and I just watched a video of his and it's similar to yours. Thorough and helpful. May God bless you both.

Hi Joe, Great stuff as usual! Thank you for emphasizing the preproduction stage. That essentially sets the roadmap for your sessions, and is so easy to overlook...or just forget about. That is a huge mistake. I consistently get client who want to use my studio and time to experiment with instrumentation and even arrangements. Obviously, That should have been done by the time you enter the studio. This is a very helpful "mini series". Thanks Joe!

Can't thank you enough for all you do.....We're fairly "connected", lol....I grew UP in Indiana, my bro-in-law is from Ft. Wayne, I order all my stuff from Sweetwater, I spent 15 years in Mississippi (Gulfport/Biloxi), and I have a close friend that lives in Nashville....weird....anyways, I hope I speak on behalf of everyone tuning in when I say THANK YOU....Hope all is well with you and yours.....

Well, here is my comment: The most helpful video I have seen regarding the recording process. Of course this is only the pre-production phase, but this is relevant stuff, and makes me think that finally, part two, is THE video I have been looking for in the last 12 months. Here we go, part 2. Thanks Joe.

Hi Joe, thanks a million for putting these together and offering them for free! I just finished season 1 of mix together and it was just what I needed to get to know my Studio One DAW better. "Mission" is such a cool tune to mix. Can't wait to start on Season 2! Mucho appreciato my friend!

Hey Joe, this is fantastic, I really appreciate that you took the time to record a video like this explaining your process; I think is very usuful to know what´s inside of your mind, and take the concepts into practice. Please continue with this kind of videos I really love them. Thank you so very much!

Hey Joe! This video has been super helpful and informative, I cannot wait to watch part 2 & 3. I really appreciate how much time you took in this video to talk about the importance of pre-production and establishing tempo and music charts. I can confidently say that my last EP had some major hiccups simple because I didn't take the time to do proper pre-production. I will definitely be incorporating the wonderful info from this series into my next project. Thank you!

Good stuff Joe. I'm just finishing up that stage now and getting into the editing phase. I'm a little behind schedule, but having the schedule in place has pushed me to where I am so it's working. A good part of my own preproduction phase has been to put a spreadsheet up on Google with each part of each song in its own cell. They start out red, go to amber then green. I do the same with each musician, so when we sit down, I can see straight away what red cells need to be amber or green. Not sure if that's useful to anyone, but it has sure helped me!

I really like that you "dream" the music and song together . I have watched many of your other videos and learned a great deal but I found that I may have swam a bit to far out past the breakers and was in need of a good solid foundation and here it is. Good Good Good , it is all good.

This is a great subject Joe, guys like me struggle with this because I have no formal training and play (1) instrument (keyboards) and sing (or try to). I use loops sometimes but mostly programs like electri6ity for guitars, trillian for bass and superior drummer for drums etc. because guys I used to play in a band with would rather play cover songs instead of writing / recording new music. And although everything you record is live audio and not midi or audio loops it helps to see the process at work. Your Videos on songwriting, your tips and being both a VIPer and now a Dueling Mixes member (shameless plug) are excellent resources. Keep the transparency flowing Joe.

Hey thanks for another great video. I'm new to Studio One 5, I switched from Cubase Elements 10.5. Question I have yet to find a proper video explaining "how to intergrate an effects processor into S1" I have a rack mount Lexicon MPX100 Dual Processor and would like to set it up. Would you be able to help or know where I can obtain help?

This is great! Preproduction has been kind of a mystery to me and this helped alot.I write record and mix my own songs playing all the instruments myself. What I struggle with is getting all my ideas mapped out for each instrument prior to the tracking stage so as to not have to go back and rerecord if something either doesn't work out or I come up with a better idea down the line. Any pointers?
@scootermc7 жыл бұрын
I'm kinda weird in this way I guess, but I actually love the "pre production" part of making and EP or entire Album. (Maybe I have more of the Producer side in me) Sure makes the rest of it easier, as you said. I do enjoy the "playing" part of it too though. :-) Keep more vids coming like this one. Thanks for all you do.
@HomeStudioCorner7 жыл бұрын
It's definitely enjoyable as long as you don't use pre-production as an excuse to not get to work on recording.

OK you asked for a comment here it is I need direction just like you did in the pre-production video I just watched that explains literally plug in the microphone into my pre-Sonus interfacing with the product or the Studio One my problem is that I have just left garage band and I'm glad I did to purchase the pre-Sonos professional studio one I use a 68C so now I have the songs I just need to figure out how to get them on to some sort of platform. I've spent most of my life actually walking in a room and they say play this I play it then I leave. So having that said I really don't have a huge interest in becoming a consummate recording engineer because I spend most of my time playing and riding music so I just need a jumpstart as to how to get this thing started I hope that makes sense

I was reading the wikipedia article on one of U2's albums (Songs of Innocence) to find some information about how the very best produced their music. Watching this video I was reminded of that when hearing precisely that piece of advice. Here is the passage: "Rubin pointed out that the group used unique sounds and arrangements to "disguise the fact that you don't have a song", and stressed the importance of songcraft and writing music that could play well even when stripped down to vocals and piano." Seems like even the very best make the same mistakes we do :D (not to discredit U2, this quote was from earlier in their production process)

I cringe whenever someone uses the term "songwriting skills". Too many songwriters write to appeal to built in markets and relying too heavily on "songwriting skills". We need more inspiration and spontaneity in songwriting and less skill. Just my opinion.
