Sabaton History

Күн бұрын

They were the Aces in the sky - proud knights who flew their planes into deadly combat. Loved by the public, feared by their enemies, the victorious pilots of the Great War rose to prominence as gallant heroes. But the personal stories of those celebrated pilots were also memories full of excruciating pain, of terrible loss, and inner struggle. Body and mind of those aces were broken by the constant danger of fighting in the air. Those who survived bore more than a few scars.

Nungesser is so much more : - he fled as a teenager to South America to compete in backyard boxing matches and street car races - Went back in 1914 willingly to enlist. He was no one special yet so sent to the infantry. In Alsace he broke through the lines, captured a German officer and went back to his own lines with the prisoner. That's when he was allowed to fly a plane. - His aviator carreer went on after the war. He actually attempted to cross the Atlantic before Lindbergh did, in the "Oiseau Blanc". He disappeared in that flight, also some Canadians from Acadia swear to have heard a plane engine at the approximate timing he should have reached the shoreline. A movie main caracter is actually directly inspired by him, played by Jean Paul Belmondo in the movie "L'As des As" (great movie if you speak French, hilarious one)

Also I can't help but mention the story of Georgios Kamperos,a Greek pilot who was the fist to ever bomb the enemy,I actually I believe the first to ever use an aircraft for military purposes. This happened at 1912 during the Balkan wars where he would take several gallons of petrol on his plane and literally throw them at Turkish formations and either lit then up or cause an exploration often hitting their ammo supplies. He would constantly do crazy maneuvers and thats why people often called him "trelokampero" or crazy Kamperos(an expression that still exists in the Greek language). He went on to make the first and most notable Greek flying school,along with the PM Venizelos,which also still exists and is the flying school the now best pilots of NATO have graduated from

That is true, but sometimes successful spies run out of luck or make a mistake. Some spies are let down by traitors or by blunders on their own side. In Mati Hari's case, it was Major Arnold Kalle who by his actions betrayed her.

It's common to admire people bravery and steadfastness in the face of peril. To look back on someone who took a beating and kept going, and think "What a guy!" But there is a limit to such things. Hearing about these pilots, I go from admiring them, to wishing someone had staged an intervention. This goes beyond bravery into self harm.
@merryrose6788

Yes, such as it would have been great if someone had intervened before the Archduke was shot, or before the trenches were dug, someone to say, "This is not a good idea. People are going to suffer and die needlessly."

@xcritic9671
@xcritic9671 4 жыл бұрын
Well a kill on an armored vehicle only meant rendering it inoperable, or "not combat worthy", so no reason to assume the same isn't true for aircraft. At least in naval battles you can see the target sink, but otherwise confirming kills is a lot more difficult than just labelling them as a casualty.

Especially in WWI, pretty much all colonies were dragged into the war, which means Africa was almost completely at war. Also Brazil and lots of Asian countries were at war...

I have an old book from Grosset and Dunlap's Air Combat Stories for Boys Pulp Aviation Series : Flying Black Birds, written by Thomson Burtis. Published in 1932. It is a story about American Aces serving in France , fighting against the germans in world war 1. Burtis was in fact a World War 1 combat veteran himself and brought authenticity to this, and the other 3 volumes he wrote in said series which is a hidden gem for history fans like me. I've also heard from vintage book historian Gary Lovisi on his youtube channel that boys who grew up reading said book and others at the time of publication, were inspired to enlist as air combat pilots in World War 2!

Any chance we could get a part 2 of Devil Dogs about the US Army 2nd Infantry Division that served with the Marines at Belleau Wood? It's the only time in history that an Army division has been commanded by a Marine general, and I think that could be an interesting thing to cover. Plus, I served with 2ID in Korea and love Devil Dogs even though it doesn't really mention the Soldiers directly. Just hearing "Second to None" in the song makes me happy, but I would love to see more details about the Army contribution to the fight.

very good video and exact history facts. The enines of the great-war-planes had been fueled with bio-alcohol. This öko-fuel was named potato-schnapps (Kartoffelschnaps). For 100 years ago, Germany had no mineral-oil so the used alcohol. Today in the debate of the climate crisis alcohol-fuel is back in discussion. If this agrarian alcohol is 100% Ethanol (no poison methanol) thinned with water, it also can fuel the pilots. You can drink the fuel.

@@djdrake1163 my memory of Aces in Exile is hazy but wasn't it about foreign pilots (Poles, Lithuanians etc.) that were flying for Britain? If I'm right, that'll still fit your idea a little bit, maybe?

"No Bullets Fly" from Heroes would fit here well, with the German Ace sparing the shot up B-17, because it was already so shot up, it seemed to him like he'd shoot a pilot hanging on a parachute, which was dishonorable to him.

Great Episode :) As I mentioned in 2015(ish) when I followed Tommy with Reinxeed on Farcebook ("Come on my swedish cousin, grow a beard") I still belive that we are relatives somehow, not only for our appearances, but also for our skills in beer devouring. Literallay freaked out, when he joined Sabaton (Noch ein Bier!)
