For his penultimate full-length film, Jean-Pierre Melville is back to his favourite genre, the detective thriller, that he mastered with films such as THE FINGER MAN (Original title : LE DOULOS) or THE GODSON (Original title : LE SAMOURAÏ). Brilliant exercise of style where the filmmaker pushes the sound to the extreme taste for the purity, THE RED CIRCLE is similar to a funeral ballet: Melville orchestrates with precision the movements of his lonely heroes, thugs and cops reunited by destiny, to which the actors Alain Delon, Yves Montand, André Bourvil and Gian Maria Volonté are lending admirably their features.
Today restored in 4K for its 50th anniversary, THE RED CIRCLE remains Melville's greatest success to which many directors have paid tribute, from Jim Jarmusch to John Woo or Michael Mann. The 4K version was selected by Venice International Film Festival and was premiered at Bologna's Il Cinema Ritrovato in August 2020.

Just watched the 4k version, a terrific movie. I love how deliberate every detail is. No unnecessary effects, sounds or dialogue. What a stark contrast to modern cinema.

One of the best Melville "film noire" as "Le Doulos" with Jean-Paul Belmondo. One of the best roles of Alain Delon and Yves Montand. And also the last movie (or almost Last) of André Bourvil who died after the release of the "Red circle".. Bourvil was popular as a great comic french actor but in this movie, he played a dramatic role.. Impressive!

Bourvil was one of the best Thénardiers I have seen (and I have seen many). I have this movie on dvd, it's really beautiful. Alain Delon and Gian Maria Volonté have excellent chemistry, and I really love noirs/neo-noirs with a tragic ending.

One of the best heist films of all time, but not only that. Every time I watched it, I discovered new details and new ideas. While at first (as a child) I was more interested in the action-oriented characters, it's ultimately the duo of Commissaire François Mattei (played by Bourvil) and the Director of Police (Paul Crachet) that I find the most subtle.

So minor edits in color, pacing, and say the silly fake driving scene redo them. This would be fun project and bring new life into these movies. Even if its just small edits and color..
