No other salamander has such a unique life history with three distinct stages. In the this episode I delve deep into the life of the terrestrial stage of the Eastern Newt / Red-s potted Newt / Notophthalmus viridescens. With great close-up videos I explain how and why it can walk around the forest floor with impunity, why it is orange, where it lives, what it eats(diet), how long it lives in the terrestrial stage and compare and contrast this stage to its other life stages.

A barn owl box.a little pond like yours.and making my wildflowers patch alot bigger. .the game commission gave me the owl box. I hear them alot around my house. As always awsome teacher 😊

Sounds like a great plan! I'm sure you'll have plenty of newt action in your yard with a pond.

At about 6:25 you look like you are in the rain forest region? I through- hiked the AT in '83 and the rain forest was one of the highlights of my trip. It was humid, full of every species of tick you can imagine, there were no majestic overlooks, it rained and the sun never seemed to be out. My hiking partner called it a big, wet, green tunnel. He hated it; I found it magical and it was easily in my top three sections of the trail. We saw these salamanders but, being a decade ahead of internet, we had no idea what they were called. Even if you're not there in this vid, you brought back a lot of great memories just now. Thanks!

Yes, Appalachian Trail is close by! I section hiked all of Virginia's 540 miles. Yes, often referred to as the green tunnel...going through Rhodendron tickets like the one I am in!

Frank, thank you for this very informational video. This is the most information I've been able to find about the red spotted Newt, which I just discovered around this time last year. They were all along the side of the road as if on a big pilgrimage. I love how docile they are and whenever I see one in the middle of the road I pick it up and move it to the grass. I noticed most of them tend to be about the same size. However, last year I picked up one that was tinier than my pinky. Is that just a really tiny newt or did it just come out of the water from the first stage?

Likely to have just emerged! After a heavy rain I often see them en mass, too!
