"Bill" (in the black & white bit) is the show's co-writer Rick Green. He was in a sketch group called The Frantics, which had a show on CBC radio, "Frantic Times". They had a short-lived TV show called "4 On The Floor" as well. They were known for their "Boot To The Head" song and routines. Rick Green also created innovative edutainment series like Prisoners Of Gravity and History Bites.

Grew up in Vermont and we got CBC, so we got Hockey Night in Canada, Don Cherry, and The Red Green Show! I loved the show, especially at the time that we also had In Living Color, SNL, Mad TV, and all the other incredible sketch comedy. I took it to heart when Red said, "If they don't find you handsome, they'll sure find you handy" for 40 years now! Still such a great show, cheesy or not!

I'm from Michigan, and I remember this show fondly too. Yeah, it didn't age as well as some shows do, but it still has some great humor. I wouldn't be upset if you reacted to more!

All Canadian actors and comedians, The Red Green Show lasted 15 seasons (300 episodes) from 1991 until 2006. Absolute favourite of us Canadians! Red Green (Steve Smith) is still touring and has a podcast where the gang gets together.

This was one of my favorite shows, growing up in Minnesota. Most of the US thought of us as Canadians back then anyways, until Fargo came out. 😕

All started back in the heyday of owning a TV channel meant a way to print money. Independent CHCH TV, Channel 11, Hamilton produced many TV shows, and one was a sketch comedy show, Smith & Smith, running from 1979 to 1985 with husband and wife comedy duo of Steve Smith and Morag Smith. Red Green was a recurring character on the show and was spun-off into The Red-Green Show a spoof of The Red Fisher Show, fishing show. Steve Smith and Rick Green made for the main show characters. Production switched to CFPL TV, Channel 10, London another independent station owned by Blackburn then becoming a CBC affiliate and later sold three times until joining the CTV Network. Production switched to Global Television Network, Channel 6 in southern Ontario, and finally switched to CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) CBLT TV, Channel 5, Toronto joining with the Royal Canadian Air Farce on Friday evening.

The best Canadian show ever might be Slings and Arrows and if you read/listen to NPR, one of the best all time. One of the best casts too, obviously. Wiki calls it a dark comedy which is usually not my cup of tea but if you haven't checked it out you owe it to yourself. All the awards and people's reviews can't be wrong.

Danish Television aired a couple of seasons back in the late 90s, and I always preferred the Handyman Corner bits. From time to time I still watch those bits here on KZbin. But in general I’m more into British humour like Bottom, The Young Ones, Yes (Prime) Minister. Oh, and of course the Irish sitcom Mrs. Brown’s Boys (well, the earlier seasons).

@@flea1972 I used to love the Goodies as a kid, they were like the poor man's Python. One of their biggest claims to fame was the episode Kung Fu Kapers which was a secret Lancastrian martial art using black puddings as a weapon. In the scene where Bill Oddie is fighting Tim Brooke Taylor (dressed as a bagpiper in kilt) a TV viewer at home literally died laughing. It is not apocryphal, it actually happened and is documented.

@@bradlucy People are very ill informed about Canadian TV and of course the old inferiority complex rears its ugly head. Canada didn't do sitcoms particularly well (with a few exceptions) but did most other genres very well. Two shows that are very popular on the fastest growing segment of FAST services are Heartland and Murdoch Mysteries. Also when people complained about Canadian TV back in the 70s think of what was headlining TV in the US, the likes of Welcome Back Kotter and Chico and the Man, total crap, but popular enough to make a star out of Travolta and Freddie Prinze.
