I also live in Modesto. Do you keep these plants in a pots or do you plant them in the ground? If so, do you remove them before the frost and store them elsewhere. Also what kind of fertilizer do you give them?
@TropicalGardenGuy3 жыл бұрын
I keep in ground. This type is quite frost hardy, but does lose leaves if it freezes. they they grow back once weather warms. I use citrus fertilizer.

How many frosts do you get in an average year Jeff?
@TropicalGardenGuy2 жыл бұрын
I’m guessing that you mean freezes? Frost can form even if air temp is above freezing and dont bother most tropicals unless accompanied by sub freezing temps. As far as freezes, we average about 5-15 days where the low temps drop below 32f. About half of those are 30-32f and our coldest morning of the year is usually 27f

@@TropicalGardenGuy thanks Jeff, we average about x15 frost events a year. However we get a freeze between 15F-20F every ten years or so.

Amazing video! Interesting how you overwinter them like we do our Musa Basjoos in 7b. Have to dig my Maurelii out before winter
@TropicalGardenGuy3 жыл бұрын
Here in my garden they are left in ground all year without protection. They seem to be one of the hardiest!
@Peekcasso3 жыл бұрын
@@TropicalGardenGuy Nice, very interesting to see. Here in 7b they are concerned the least hardiest
@TropicalGardenGuy3 жыл бұрын
@@Peekcasso I think You are talking about zebrina? They have some red on the leaves and they are not hardy here either.
@Peekcasso3 жыл бұрын
@@TropicalGardenGuy No I have 2 Maurelli in my garden but I have to dig them out before winter.

Just got 1 yesterday, several inches, currently have in pot, will put in ground in Spring, (6b)

Here we are in mid December and mine looks great! This said, in your zone it might be best to dig it up each winter, trim the leaves and store it till weather warms up in spring. Treat them like a big bulb! They can take a lot of abuse once established, but are damaged below 32f

Is this the same as Ensete ventricosum maurelii ???

Does this like hot weather like Arizona in direct sun
@TropicalGardenGuy4 жыл бұрын
Mine did fine at 112f, but we cool down to upper 60’s at night. If you live where its real hot try partial shade
