The Red River Campaign - Louisiana - March-May 1864
The Red River Campaign was intended to be one of the key parts of the Union offensive strategy in the Spring of 1864. The combined Army and Navy expedition appeared to have more than enough strength to overcome the weak forces remaining to the Confederacy west of the Mississippi. Instead it turned out to be one of the Civil War’s greatest fiascos. Professor Jeff Prushankin had ancestors who fought on both sides - and in this lecture he explains the reasons for the campaign and why it ended in failure.
