The Red River Floodway Expansion Project: An Investment in the Future

Between 2005 and 2009, the Governments of Canada and Manitoba undertook a major expansion of Winnipeg's flood protection infrastructure. The Red River Floodway Expansion Project increased Winnipeg's flood protection from 1-in-90 to 1-in-700 year flood protection by increasing the capacity of the floodway channel. In the process, the project will provide greater flood protection for over 450,000 residents, 140,000 homes, and 8,000 businesses, and will prevent over $12 billion in flood damages during a major flood. Over 3000 people and over 150 companies worked on the project, that will provide long-lasting flood protection for Winnipeg for many years to come.
