In Korea during the first half of the 1700s, Yi San (Lee Junho) is an aloof and perfection-loving young prince. His father’s killing haunts him, although it leaves him in the position to take the throne once his grandfather - the cruel and ruthless current king responsible for Yi San’s father’s death - dies. He has resolved to become a benevolent monarch who will reform the law when he eventually takes the throne, but the way his father was killed has scarred him emotionally.
At court, he meets a young woman named Sung Deok Im (Lee Se Young). Yi San falls in love with her and tries to convince her to become his official concubine. But Sung Deok Im is strong-willed and free-spirited. She is also intelligent enough to understand that becoming a royal consort to the future king is a prestigious role, but one that would restrict her freedom and likely bring her little in the way of joy. But Yi San’s love for Sung Deok Im is true, and she starts to understand that forming a union with him could ultimately benefit his troubled realm.
This drama series was based on a 2017 novel by Kang Mi Gang.
“The Red Sleeve” is a 2021 South Korean drama series that was directed by Jung Ji In.

She loved him just as much but hid it in order to not hurt and to not completely lose herself. She told her friends she loved him but she would never let him know that. The evidence of her love was in actions not in words which is why he was able to look past her cold words and see the true intent of her heart. After she passed he was given her box. Although he felt she loved her friends the most he saw that the box was mostly filled with memories of her encounters with him. She desired her freedom but realized she would be just as miserable without him.

@@missydonald6381 even if she becomes his concubine, he still has other concubines/women. As Deok Im says “New ladies will arrive in a row everyday”, meaning even if she becomes his concubine, she can never fully have him. She really deserves better. 😭

Looking at the love story as well as the series between Yi San and Deok Im one can say that if she had accepted to be his concubine when he first proposed there wouldn’t have been a need for the 3 other concubines as he was dead set on making a family with her and she the only mother to his children. Also as for the queen they married when he was still younger as it was customary in the period they lived it. About making her his queen even if he couldn’t because of laws and class system she was the queen of his heart and everyone knew this except for Deok Im some how. (even if not certain)

@@johndoe5346 It comes to a point that she has to make a decision because he cannot see her anymore if she continues to refuse him. He thinks that she will still choose to leave and never see him again. But he leaves the choice to her. It is easy for us women with our 21st century ears to get angry with him when he continues to press her in one episode after another. On the other hand he, the emperor is also bound by tradition and their relationship cannot continue any longer. The look on his face lets us know that he is shocked when she chooses to stay with him. It seems to me in our world that we think we can always choose freedom. But any choice we make freely means that we are freely giving up something else.

Omg whether you liked the drama or not, I have to say, you summarised the essence of the show ever so perfectly. As much as I understood other viewers who were angry, knowing the cultural context in it, and the fact that this was real really made me think about our freedom of choices in relationships in the 21st century. Having to give up one thing for another was a really human theme to embed, and personally, I think that was the beauty of the show. @@letter131 I absolutely loved "The Red Sleeve." And thank you so much for your kind comments. I am 81. If I were still teaching, I would find a way to include "The Red Sleeve" in my curriculum because it is such powerful story telling just as "Hamlet" (also a story rooted in history) is powerful story telling. It is not because she does not love him--even though she lies and says she doesn't---it is because she knows herself very well. She knows that she will become a different person if the little bit of freedom she does have gets severely restricted. Add to this the fact that she by law and tradition is no longer able to enjoy the company of her court maid friends. Even though I knew it would be painful, I watched the last two episodes again yesterday, and then I read a couple of the letters San wrote in honor of her. From the beginning she knew that the loneliness would have a huge impact on her. She was no longer allowed, by tradition, to continue her friendship with her friends among the court ladies. She can never leave the compound/courtyard to which she has been restricted. And, of course because he is emperor, San, cannot come to visit her everyday. On top of this she has a miscarriage, then the news of the Crown Prince's death. It is one traumatic event after another and she has limited fontana with him and none with her friends. This is why she kept turning him down. She might not know how it would play out, but if she agrees to become his concubine, she does know that the loneliness will have a huge impact on her and how she navigates life. I have no doubt that long before she admits it in words, she falls in love with San just as he does with her. 'Actions speak louder than words." And that is the reason he is confused when she speaks cruel words to him and in an angry tone of voice.. These are the kinds of conversations I had with my students whether it was about "Hamlet", the Lord of the Rings books and later the movies, etc., etc., etc. Thanks for indulging me..

I can’t imagine being in her place and making such a decision. To love him and know he loves you but to be with him is to forgo any sort of normal life. To share him not only with the country but with a harem of women, some of which he cannot ignore as the union is a political one and the whole purpose in the arranged marriage and alliance is the hope that it is their delegate who carries the next crown prince. Knowing every time the space beside you is empty, he is lying with someone else. To preoccupy yourself with frivolities - enjoying less freedom than even as a court lady - as you wait for your next visit. It’s such an extreme choice. Either you have nothing to do with him or he becomes your entire world with no room for yourself. On a side note, the court lady system was horrifying. These women were basically slaves with few right and prohibited from ever marrying or having families (unless the king took notice like a casual pedestrian plucking flowers on a walk through the park) even if they were - on rare occasion - allowed to leave the palace. It’s revolting.
