This just made me feel so bad for Kay. She got with Phil at an atrociously young age, so she didn’t really have an opportunity to become her own person and figure out what she wanted in life. She also was set up to fail by being told by those who raised her that marriage was going to be “a fight,” so she grew up thinking that the way Phil treated her and her kids is normal. And then there’s the fact that he cheated on her and had a daughter with the other woman. He has no respect for her and just treats her like a doormat. And the worst part is that she thinks that it’s just a typical thing for a Christian marriage. That’s not how love is. And it shouldn’t be like that. Edit for typo

I have a pretty thick accent and mention of the south or Texas immediately puts a certain taste in people’s mouths. I try to distance myself from that and correct some preconceived notions but shows like this certainly don’t help. I’d say Mrs. Kay is a solid representation of that kind, loving spirit of the south but it broke my heart to hear her so nonchalantly talk about Phil putting them out on the street and even thinking he was gonna shoot her for Christ’s sake! That disregard for domestic abuse is all too common here too and yet another thing we gotta roll our sleeves up and collectively deconstruct & correct. Unhappiness and lack of a support should be well more than enough of a reason to end or leave a marriage. Let alone abuse and infidelity.

30:51 I would also like to know. When I got pregnant at 14, my baby daddy’s extremely bigoted and Christian mom told me she got an abortion at 13 and she had never told anyone and she regretted it all her life. And you know what? She’s just as pro life as any other conservative, and oh yeah she’s totally forgiven. But had I gotten one? I would have never been forgiven. Their abortions were back in the day, “it was different,” “I had to” But they can’t possibly have empathy for other women who also have to. Like, she benefited from not having that baby at 13. Her life is probably infinitely better since she didn’t have a baby at 13 in like the 70s-80s. She was able to get married and plan her family how she wanted it. She was able to focus on her faith and be a stay at home mom. She reaped all those benefits, but wants to steal that away from other women and young girls in the exact same position. I don’t understand the cognitive dissonance.

Don't forget the other comments though. The homophobia got most of the headlines because conservatives kept spinning it as 'Phil was censored for quoting the bible.' But he also said some horribly racist things in the same interview, and in other interviews. Phil on Islamic terrorism: "“In this case, you either have to convert them, which I think would be next to impossible. I’m not giving up on them, but I’m just saying either convert them or kill them.” Phil on history: "Look at any society where there is no Jesus. I'll give you four: Nazis, no Jesus. Look at their record. Uh, Shintos? They started this thing in Pearl Harbor. Any Jesus among them? None. Communists? None. Islamists? Zero. That's eighty years of ideologies that have popped up where no Jesus was allowed among those four groups. Just look at the records as far as murder goes among those four groups." Phil on his childhood in segregated Louisiana: "The blacks worked for the farmers. I hoed cotton with them. I'm with the blacks, because we're white trash. We're going across the field.... They're singing and happy. I never heard one of them, one black person, say, I tell you what: These doggone white people-not a word!... Pre-entitlement, pre-welfare, you say: Were they happy? They were godly; they were happy; no one was singing the blues." As for his statements on homosexuality, well... not fit to repeat here. But let's put it like this: After he was sidelined in the show, I read a /lot/ of right-wing articles describing how Phil was being censored, oppressed and punished for his faith and his 'biblical worldview.' But I noted at the time, in not a single one of them that I found were any of the above quoted, nor were his words regarding homosexuality. There were plenty of people ready to defend him, but they wouldn't tarnish their hero by repeating his words.

@DimaRakesah3 жыл бұрын
I've noticed that in many conservative ultra fundy religions the women are the ones that are forced to take accountability for the mistakes of men, while men are often forgiven. Next time you're watching a video about fundies just watch the way all accountability in their culture is forced onto women and away from men. Women are held accountable for sex out of marriage, for rape/sexual assault, for men's lust, for the state of their home, for their children, for the happiness of their husbands/fathers/brothers, for the family's reputation, etc. When a woman or girl makes a mistake the blame comes down hard on her and they are quick to discipline any female who steps out of line. When a man makes a mistake, even a severe one such as raping an under age girl or cheating on his wife, the men around him (who are the authority figures in their culture) are quick to talk about "forgiveness" rather than punishment or basic accountability. They're all watching each other's back. So if Joseph fucks up and goes on a bender for a night and gets in a drunk driving accident the other men around him rally to help and offer forgiveness, cause the next time THEY screw up Joseph will be there to help and forgive them. But not the women. The women they actually want to keep from making "mistakes" entirely. It's as if the women are literally paying for the mistakes that their men make, by being held to such a high standard as if they cannot be trusted... even though the men who are trusted keep fucking up and get away with it and the women will be expected to forgive them over and over again. Their entire culture is structured to allow men to screw up and get away with it. There is a youtube on here who was part of a particularly fundamentalist religion. Both she and her sister were repeatedly sexually assaulted by their father, one daughter even became pregnant. One sister managed to run away and press charges, but the entire community rallied around her father and supported and forgave him, even the mother and the other sister stayed by his side, while they all blamed the runaway sister for it. They're trained to blame any woman who steps out of line but to forgive the men.
@sosmooth132 жыл бұрын
This is exactly why I abhor conservative Christian culture. Cheating happens, but you’ll commonly see that in Christian consecutive culture, women have to suck it up and take one for the team to make that holy matrimony work. Then they judge liberals and call them sinful because they have happy relationships with whoever they want? Or if a liberal relationship falls apart it’s because it wasn’t of god? Yeah, after growing up Christian and growing out of this, I’m annoyed by the hypocrisy.

No, they absolutely are not rednecks. Not even close. They’re redneck posers, so are the Republican racists you traditionally think of when you hear the word. As you said, redneck comes from us Appalachian miners who wear red bandanas around our necks when we fought an actual war for labor rights. A lot of the labor rights you all enjoy today are because we literally died for them. (Look into it, it was called the Coal Wars). And that movement was pro-union, pro working class, pro solidarity, anti police, and anti capitalist. REAL rednecks still hold those values today and we stand in unshakable solidarity with our PoC and LGBTQ brothers and sisters in their fight. Our communities even intersect, I know plenty of PoC and LGBTQ rednecks. Real redneck culture is all about the betterment of the working class and the common folk and that includes all of us. Here's this 17 year old girl and they are just constantly talking about it and hammering that home. In the time I watched the show, there was another 17 yr old girl (Bindi Irwin who is sunshine personified), a 14 yr old girl (Primrose from hunger games) and a 15 yr old boy (I think he was on social media). Not ONCE for any of these other underage teenagers, was their sexual status EVER mentioned, because it's insane. i have mixed feelings about willie “approving” sadie’s outfits on DWTS. on one hand, the entertainment industry is so sexually exploitative of young girls and we need to protect them. on the other hand, the reasoning behind why the father must approve an outfit is really patriarchal and not something i agree with. my parents aren’t conservative at all but if i was going on a tv show when i was still a minor they would definitely be concerned about what kinds of outfits and dance moves i was being asked to wear/do.

It can still be dangerous for me to even watch your videos sometimes because the guilt creeps in and I start to consider converting all over again. @@emilyhannon9546 I had a similar impression of Sadie. To me she seemed incredibly hesitant in that support of Donald Trump, like she wasn’t fully behind it. But she knows that’s what her parents want her to say & what her demographic wants her to say. She reminded me a lot of my gay younger closeted highly religious self just repeating what I’d heard to make those around me happy. I’m almost 30 and just now learning how harmful that was to myself & others. It takes a long time to grow out of that. Some never do. I don’t think she was raised in an environment where women speaking up for themselves or thinking differently than the men in their family was at all encouraged. I don’t think she’s ever been taught to challenge the system to question authority. Which if you’re not born with those personality traits, takes a long time to learn. Especially for those of us who are introverted & soft spoken. I’m not saying her behavior isn’t harmful, I’m just saying it takes a long time to unlearn those harmful behaviors especially when you grew up in such a bubble. Hopefully her success leads her to travel & meet new people & learn & grow as a person. I don’t think it’s fair to judge someone by how they listened to their dad at 17. That’s a child. But as she gets older it is on her to experience new things & grow. She can only lean on the excuse of her bubble & childhood for so long.

My mom has told me similar things and excuses bad behaviors from my dad because, "that's just how men are" and "marriage is just tough, its never easy" Some of my dad's behaviors have been: Flirting and almost hooking up with another woman because the devil tempted him. Openly and proudly saying horribly racist and sexist things (that even my mom doesn't agree with) because that's just how he was raised and he can't help it Explains away intense anger as justified or something that he just struggles with but never gets any type of help for etc. Etc. It infantilizes men in a sense where they can make mistakes that they are somehow not responsible for (i.e. the devil, demons, did it or the woman wasn't good enough) and its the woman's job to work through it.

It’s really hard to understand until you’re in an abusive relationship. You think it’ll never happen to you until it does. I watched my mom go through countless abusive relationships and thought I knew better, I knew the red flags, but I was still able to be manipulated & preyed upon by an abuser. Especially when you suffer from any kind of mental illness, it’s very hard to tell what is acceptable behavior and what isn’t. When you’re in it, and being emotionally manipulated every single day and gaslit and lied to it’s hard to tell if your anger is justified or not. Especially when an abuser isolates you from your support system who could tell you if your anger is justified or not. When you’re in it, every single time you’ve ever been told “marriage is hard” or “relationships are work” comes flooding back to you and you can’t tell the difference between things behind hard & things being unacceptable. It’s a fine line and I don’t think we can just victims of domestic abuse so harshly for staying in those relationships.
