I read this book earlier this year and really loved it. I thought this was really well-written and the gothic horror element was just enough. I also really liked that it shows the story from both the sister and the brother's POV. It really made it feel like a complete story. I think this will end up in my top books of the year.

I feel the very same way! It's currently sitting in my top 2 reads of the year - Chris Panatier's THE REDEMPTION OF MORGAN BRIGHT is my other one. Both well written, gothic horrors based on awful historic practices and stories that leave a lasting impression.

Amazing review, I couldn't have said it better myself. I loved that the sibling dynamic was so strong in this book, even though they are separated for the large majority of the story. Their love (especially coming from the sister) just radiates off the page. And cool to hear about your enhanced reading experience with the essay collection, I will have to go back to that one!

I totally agree! I also love the ending - SPOILERS COMING - do not read past this point if you haven't read the book! I loved the ending - we ended on the reunion and hope, even though that was such a rare thing to happen for the people having to live through that hate. Redbone was such a shock - but if I'd lost Robert or even Lottie, I'd have just crumpled up and been a sobbing mess on the floor.

Great review! I LOVED this book. It was my first Due book and it made my top 10 last year. Wish I had read the essay collection you recommended first as I can definitely see it enhancing the experience. I’m so glad you loved this novel!!

I've read some of her other short stories and can confirm that she consistently writes beautifully and always leaves a lasting impression. I'm going to get another one of her full length novels soon! :D

The Good House is the one I want to read next!! 22 hours is fine...I just spent the last year and 4 months rereading The Wheel of Time on audio, most of those were almost 50 hours, 22 feels like nothing at this point, lol

I did hear him say Southern Man is a stand alone. He recently announced that he has blood cancer so I don't know if this is gonna be his last book.
