If you're looking at purchasing a fly tying vise, this one should be on your radar. It's simple and easy to use. Also, it's a fantastic bargain! Tons of options to dial in your fly tying style. I usually tie streamer patterns so the regular jaws on the regal medallion fit me just fine.

My problem is that at home, including my tying bench, i dont have any tables with an edge to clamp to. I have a Peak traveler that has both a base and a clamp so you can use either, depending on whats available. But my home vise is a Griffin Patriot Cam, from the early 1980’s, and its rock solid, originally bought it for tying treble hook tails I put on my home-made spinners. I did have to replace a set screw once. Thanks for showing us the Regal, i did come close to buying one a few years back. Theres a guy in our fly club that collects vises!

I have the older version of this vise. Couldn't tell how old it is but it's a great vise. I currently tie on the revolution vise with stainless steel jaws and I love that one. If I travel and bring a vise I bring old regal c clamp vise as well. Great video!

The revolution looks so dang sexy! I always wondered how good the rotary function on it was.

I have exactly what you have there. I agree it's a great vise for the money., though I think I am heavy handed too and get some hook slippage. The bases are pretty expensive at 150 bucks US. Thought about trying out a Peak or maybe a Griffin Mongoose.

That offer is hard to pass up! I unfortunately took the head apart to make a vise for shanks/tube flies. So it looks like no DIY vise video in the forecast

I tie a lot of steelhead shank flies, will the regular jaws be ok for this?
@greenhornflyhorn
@greenhornflyhorn Ай бұрын
You need the shank head if it’s a straight shank(ie. Opst, aqua flies). wadington and fish skull shanks will work with regular head. For straight shanks i will bend the tail so the regular jaws grab then cut off the bend after you tie the fly. Its the only work around i have found that actually works.

Well presented. The Regal is a great vise but a Renzetti, which I own, is as good, with true rotary function and a better hook size range , is a better value. I tie with a group and most have Peak or Renzetti vises and prefer them over Regals based upon price and overall function. Thanks.

If occasional slippage is an issue, the big game head solves this. I tie predominantly long shank streamers, it doesn't take much for an 8 or 10 xl shank to make the hook slip. The grooves in the jaws end this.

For the price point, in my opinion it comes down to a matter of personal preference. Jaw strength (Regal Medallion) vs true rotary function (Renzetti Traveler) I prefer pedestal over c-clamp as well as rotary over jaw strength. Both are great options.
@greenhornflyhorn
@greenhornflyhorn 2 ай бұрын
Yeah, they both are great! I just enjoy having my hand on the head of the regal. I have a homemade true rotary vise and it’s a feature I never use. So my money went to regal. Definitely would’ve been the other way around if I used rotary.

Interesting how many real pros use a regal. At the moment it is the best fixed head vise, and the best price, though they seem to be gunning the price with the newest head being 400 alone for the head. Vast majority of pros don't use a ratating vise, because they are very awkward for the left arm; good ones are costly; and for the most part pros don't use full rotary. But the expensive Renzettis are popular with the influencer crowd.

@@HondoTrailside Where I reside (Nova Scotia), I agree Regal is most popular. In my opinion, a large portion of tyers in my region participate in Atlantic salmon angling and therefore tie salmon flies. The feedback that I have received from some tyers is that Renzetti is good for small flies (trout), while regal is preferred for larger flies (e.g., salmon and predator flies). However, I know that some of the "real pros" in my region use the Regal Revolution (best of both worlds), although higher price point. I agree a c-clamp Regal is cheaper than a c-clamp Renzetti, however, the Renzetti is more economical if you prefer a pedestal vise (assuming not an aftermarket base). Again, I believe it comes down to a matter of personal preference for both the casual and the pro tyer (clamp vs. pedestal, jaw strength vs. rotary), although both are great options. Even though I really like my Renzetti (trout, salmon, smaller predator flies), I think an argument could be made for many of the other rotary vices in the same price range.
@peacepipe215

I think that is a great vice but I believe you get more vise for the same price but actually cheaper with a Renzetti or a Peak! I do have all three.

What do you mean by more vise? The true rotary feature? I almost bought the peak but just love how comfortable the regal is
@HondoTrailside
@HondoTrailside 2 ай бұрын
@@greenhornflyhorn Yeah the ergonomics are better on the angled vises. And pros don't use rotary. Look on the internet and find me a real pro tying full rotary. I see them on rotaries, but not using them. Sometimes they have the rotary bobbin cradle removed. Norvise, I don't know about that one. Don't know any pros who use one, but then there are at least guys using the full rotary to actually tie flies with them. Most rotaries are based on the idea that describing full rotations at 6" diameter is faster than moving a bobbin in a 1-2" circle. Plus when you do that, even on the Master, the head flops around. Amateurs like them because it is an easy decision to go rotary; "what if I need it". Which is a different place to be than knowing you don't need it and it is in the way.

I owned one way back, and then sold it. But then I bought a couple for my kids. Don't buy the magnum, oddly it does not open up anywhere near as much as the fine. It would actually work better on midges, upside down. It makes no sense. The fine in SS is the best head. I just got it for the SS because of salt water. But turns out it has the best head shape and largest heavy hook capacity, and ties smallest. But it is an upcharge. I have a few quibbles on the components that aren't the head. I don't know why on some things. Like why does the stem rattle in the pedestal base socket before you tighten it. But these are not things that are deal breakers. Putting small hooks in is not a problem but it takes a lot of strength to open the jaw to max, and if you have arthritis you might find it too much. You can put a tube on the lever for a little more leverage. I don't think putting standard trout hooks in the vise would bother people with even moderate hand weakness. I have a bunch of vises, I would say Regals are built differently, but fit and finish are up there with the best. It is so simple that the parts don't have to be super fancy. Function is as good as it gets.

I notice quite a few people switching to those SS jaws. I have been eyeing up the shank jaws myself(steelheader at heart). I do enjoy the options but they are a bit pricey for us Canadians

@@greenhornflyhorn Thomson was my first vise. But the globalization came long way since then. Right now, for the same amount you can get a very effective rotary vise in clamp style. I ordered one for camp site tying where I attached to the picnic table, and it was very efficient. Just search globally.
