As a german and girl really into splatter films, im so glad the bpjm has gotten way more lax nowadays. Theres rumors that there strictness pre late 2010s came from mostly being catholic church members trying to apply religious moral purity doctrine to the law

A lot of game from this time period were easier is Japan. (This game, Ninja Gaiden 3, Rocket Knight Adventures just to name a few) The reason is, the United States had video game rentals. They didn’t want you beating the game on your first time renting it and never getting it again. So they purposely made it harder in the states.

Pretty much all the Konami games were easier in japan. The difficulty was added in eu/us due to them fearing theyd lose money from rentals if games could be beat quickly. From what I heard renting out videogames was illegal in Japan to this time, so never an issue pre export. For example in us/eu castlevania all enemies do 3 bars damage, in jp its tiered from 1 to 3 depending on the enemy. Castlevania 3 is still a nightmare to beat in the easier famicom version though.
