Remember coming back from Mansfield TA centre with my late Dad in a camo robin van and getting pulled over, these road side checks. The guy asking me Dad, where you just drove from and him saying can't answer that. I work for the Military the guy said oh be on your way. never laughed so much.

Thanks for this it brought back fond memories. I had 3 Robins and 2 Rialtos in the 80’s . They were simple cars and superbly reliable. I can’t remember having a single issue with any of them over the years of ownership.

4:30 Thought that was an aluminium chassis!! Either way it looks bloody strong! What a great company, not afraid to think outside the box. Imagine now with all the retro stuff going on now, they could have made a modern version of the Safety Seven to compete with Morgan 🙂 Thanks for posting

Elvis, I wonder what happened to those design sketches we saw in the film? It was possible to make out the origins of the Bond Bug. It would make for another interesting book I think! Thanks for sharing. John

Reliant missed a trick in not building the 88 hp 1.6 Kent powered Reliant Rebel GT.

Superb industrial spirit drove guys at Reliant, I guess.. They made n designed stuff in house as much as they could! Look at British Leyland in the seventies and the kind of mess they created due to which lovely cars like SD1 never realized their full potential! On the other hand this small little company produced cars that did not rust, we're easy to fix n reliable and tech or no tech lightness ensured handling was good fuel consumption low and perhaps pollution too! Superb

yes we were chased into performance and not other better things from clarkson who put the boot into a struggling industry, these cars were perfectly good for the job intended, like the piaggio ape or tuktuk or 2cv van. fine for normal driving and shopping and as economical as could be achieved at the time and easily repaired and serviced.....shame we lost it

Nowadays the majority of BMWs are built in Turkey, but people buy them for their 'German Engineering'!

Obviously an underestimated company that lacked nothing in terms of ambition, if it was not for the speed bumps, (which I would have thought might be difficult to avoid in an odd leger?) and the criminally negligent pothole situation, which you cant straggle with three wheels? the world, UK especially needs vehicles like these for commuters trying to get to work, yeh you will be stuck in traffic jams getting in/out of the big towns but so will the guy in his Ferrari behind you. Id have one for commuting any day!

dont worry potholes evolved , along with speed bumps to make sure no car could avoid them :)

Lovely video, although I do not buy that they are the biggest producers of alloy engines in the UK, as Ithink in 1967 that would have been Roots with the Hillman Imp engines.

Say what you want there’s not many places you can get a relatively cheap hand built car

The “factory“ is a disorganised worn-out nightmare, a wonder anything was actually produced there. Reminds me of a Soviet plant. Ford were lightyears ahead of them. A marvel they were able to survive for a few more years.
