I am an old soldier serving many years in the British Army,I am also an Irishman by heritage and have always counted myself as Irish,I have served on UN missions in my time and we were only trying to keep the peace as this young man was,I am not a religious man but may his God keep him at rest and preserve his soul,I admit I was in floods of tears watching this,my condolences go to his friends and family.RIP Pte Rooney.

O God of spirits and of all flesh, Who hast trampled down death and overthrown the Devil, and given life to Thy world, do Thou, the same Lord, give rest to the souls of Thy departed servants in a place of brightness, a place of refreshment, a place of repose, where all sickness, sighing, and sorrow have fled away. Pardon every transgression which they have committed, whether by word or deed or thought. For Thou art a good God and lovest mankind; because there is no man who lives yet does not sin, for Thou only art without sin, Thy righteousness is to all eternity, and Thy word is truth. For Thou are the Resurrection, the Life, and the Repose of Thy servants who have fallen asleep, O Christ our God, and unto Thee we ascribe glory, together with Thy Father, who is from everlasting, and Thine all-holy, good, and life-creating Spirit, now and ever unto ages of ages. Amen.

The Irish Government can be congratulated for only committing its military forces overseas on peace-keeping missions, especially in Lebanon. Elsewhere they are in Mali, Congo and Kosovo. Look up the story of the Siege of Jadotville in the Congo of 1961, for earlier examples of Irsih soldiers' courage under fire.

@@coilinflaherty355 Thanks for reading. There's an updated story (2016) by Declan Power of the siege of A Company, 35th Battalion - to accompany a Netflix movie. Horrific. Power had previously served in the Irish Army and Defense Headquarters.

@@td6369 Thanks for reading. "In the Siege of Jadotville in September 1961, a small contingent of the Irish Army's 35th Battalion, designated "A" Company, serving as part of the United Nations Operation in the Congo (Opération des Nations Unies au Congo, ONUC) were besieged in the mining town of Jadotville (modern-day Likasi) by Katangese forces loyal to the secessionist State of Katanga. The siege took place during the seven-day escalation of a stand-off between ONUC and Katangese forces during Operation Morthor. Although the contingent of 155 Irish soldiers repelled attacks by a 3,000-man Katangese force for five days while an undersized relief force of Irish, Indian and Swedish troops attempted to reach them, they were eventually forced to surrender having run out of ammunition and water. "A" Company was subsequently held as prisoners of war for approximately one month. The Irish forces inflicted approximately 1,300 casualties (including up to 300 killed) on the Congolese force, with no deaths amongst "A" Company."
